Jackson a good coach?

08.25.2003

Now here is a role that I would love to see Samuel L. (Big Pimpin') Jackson take on! The star is in early talks to headline the Paramount Pictures film, BACK IN THE DAY, about controversial California high school basketball coach Ken Carter, who, in the middle of an undefeated season in 1999, benched his entire team (including his own son) because of low or slipping grades, causing them to forfeit the two games and ruin their bench-mark streak. He even went as far as making the school gym off-limits until he saw a noticeable improvement in their marks. Nice! This guy should be considered a national hero (or international for that matter) for braving some undoubtedly pissed-off parents and putting these kids' education in front of the influentially heavy-handed spotlight of high school sports. I am a total sucker for sports themed movies with a conscience and Jackson has certainly proven that he has the range to carry a film like this, so hopefully this all comes together. Big Pimpin' can next be seen in Quentin Tarantino's KILL BILL: VOL 1 with Uma Thurman and Philip Kaufman's THE BLACKOUT MURDERS with Ashley Judd.
