Big Fish swims away

08.28.2003

It wasn't long ago - a few weeks maybe - that Sony Pictures announced a release date for their holiday Oscar hopeful, BIG FISH. Producer Richard Zanuck spoke to Variety and announced a November 26th date, hoping to capitalize on the Thanksgiving holiday. But after some more Oscar strategizing was done, Sony has decided on a new plan for BIG FISH. The Tim Burton directed drama will now open in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto on December 18th, a Thursday. Each week thereafter it will continue to expand at other key cities until it's finally released wide on January 23rd. The so-called "platform release" is a common tactic in studios looking to build Oscar buzz. Sometimes it works (AMERICAN BEAUTY) and sometimes it fails (THE MAJESTIC). What this new strategy has in store for BIG FISH remains to be seen. The move could be a risky one cause it now positions FISH in between RETURN OF THE KING, which opens on the 17th, and MONA LISA SMILE, which opens on the 19th. It's only major competition on the previous November date was Disney's HAUNTED MANSION. The competition in January is pretty slim though so perhaps Sony is banking on the film gaining major ground in a slow 2004.
