Hughes bails on De Niro

08.28.2003

One-half of the Hughes Brothers directiing duo went off on his own with plans to direct his first solo project, the Fox thriller HIDE AND SEEK with Robert De Niro. But now, after three weeks of pre-production, Albert Hughes has dropped out of the project due to that old excuse, "creative differences." Fox is still committed to making the project, due largely to the fact that De Niro's contract is pay-or-play, meaning he gets his money whether the movie gets made or not. The film would follow De Niro as the single dad of a young girl who starts acting bizarre - VERY bizarre - as she copes with her mother's death. The search for a replacement is on and one wonders if they've already approached the other half of the Hughes Brothers, Allan. De Niro would likely have approval over any director the studio brings in. This would be the second kid-is-acting-creepy movie for De Niro in recent years with his GODSEND on the way in 2004 from Lions Gate. That film follows a doctor who clones the dead son of a young couple (Greg Kinnear and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) only to find that when the boy reaches the age at which he died, he starts acting bizarre - VERY bizarre. No word on whether De Niro is interested in starring in PROBLEM CHILD 4.
