Is Twittering during a movie OK?

Sure, why not?
Absolutely not, it's completely disrespectful.
Depends on the circumstances.

PS

For the record, I really AM a nice guy. tamere commented on what I said about physical violence toward theater-talkers, which I didn't expect would be misunderstood. But clearly s/he didn't comprehend the situation. First of all, I didn't say I wanted to hurt someone because she merely "talked to her friends about something." That is a complete misreading of the situation I was describing, which blows my reaction out of proportion. I guess that would be [link] 2.

But yeah, I said I felt like tackling the woman to the ground, but I was exaggerating for effect; the same way I'm sure most everyone has said, "I'm gonna kill that guy!" for stealing their drink from the work refrigerator. You wouldn't ACTUALLY kill the guy; and I wouldn't ACTUALLY hurt someone for talking at the theater! I was exaggerating it to make the point that it is extremely bothersome, and sometimes downright infuriating to many of us when people disrespect us with their incessant talking.

Now, I'll admit that yes, I meant what I said; I have sometimes FELT like confronting someone for their relentless disrespect, but I'd never do it, and THAT's because I AM a nice guy.

I also kinda hoped to make everyone consider the fact that there are people out there who might feel like confronting them for their talking, and ARE NOT nice, and would not restrain themselves. So it might be in everyone's best interest to quit pissing people off with their inconsiderate behavior... which really goes for every place and every situation.

I didn't know that, that theater crowds are made up largely of children, now. But it makes sense: adults who pay to see a movie, want to SEE the movie; kids and people like tamere are only SOMEWHAT interested in the movie. They're more interested in socializing than watching a movie. They don't seem to realize that SOME of the people who paid money to get into that theater, did so because their PRIMARY interest was to see THE MOVIE. They're more interested in socializing than watching a movie. They don't seem to realize that SOME of the people who paid money to get into that theater, did so because their PRIMARY interest was to see THE MOVIE. If I went to the park and found a couple sitting on a bench and sat down with them and shoved a mini-DVD player in their face and said, "Hey, watch this movie I'm watching!", should they or should they NOT be pissed at me? And then I suppose that when they told me that I was bothering them, I should tell them to "fucking grow up" and insist that they watch the movie with me! 'Sound about right?

Now, there's nothing wrong with socializing, but if that is one's main interest, then they should do it in a place where they can talk and play with their phone without disrupting other people. If someone cannot be troubled to sit quietly for two little hours to watch a movie, then WHY are they going to the theater anyway?! The theater is there to show movies to people who want to watch movies! If you aren't very much INTO movies, then why would you even go to a place showing movies? If you're INTO talking, then go to the park... it's FREE! If you're INTO your important job, then go to work... they'll pay YOU! If you're into texting, go to your HOUSE, because you're looking at that little screen instead of your surroundings anyway, so why pay money to do it?!

I appreciate what you said, Shadowalker. I SO wish they'd bring back ushers. Well, our local theater did start employing ushers a little before I finally stopped going; but they only show up every now and then, and just step in, look around, and step back out, they don't really monitor effectively. I appreciate the fact that the theater has taken a step in that direction, but I wish they'd do it the way they used to. Because it does bother me that I can't go enjoy a movie at the theater anymore, because of the 90% certainty that it will be spoiled at some point by people who are at the movie, when they don't even CARE that much about it.

I'm glad to read that just about everyone is as offended by Tamere's attitude as I am. Interesting, too, that rude people (like, y'know, Tamere) invariably have that same "Fuck off" attitude towards everyone else (which, as others have pointed out, implies, very heavily, that Tamere thinks s/he is more "important" than everyone else).

The unfortunate thing is that rude people like Tamere are forcing nice people like ColdZro away from the theatres. This is very sad. (Tellingly, while

The unfortunate thing is that rude people like Tamere are forcing nice people like ColdZro away from the theatres. This is very sad. (Tellingly, while driving home the other night, I heard a report on the radio where theatre owners were wondering why their crowds are now almost exclusively children, while the adults are avoiding the experience like the plague.)

And why don't theatres have ushers anymore? You remember, those big guys who used to patrol the aisles, quietly telling people to "Stop talking" and "Stop kicking the seat" and so on? Ironically, the last usher I ever saw in a theatre was, well, me...and that was back in the damn '80s!

tamere, first, I AM a nice guy, and it's because I am a nice and considerate guy that I'm so offended at you people who aren't. Like Turboshandy said, if you're so busy, or so important (and no, you didn't say the word "important", your post implies it... Comprehension fail) that you can't turn off your phone for two measly hours in order to avoid distracting the people in the theater with you, then YOU are the one who should have enough respect to stay out of the theater and wait for the DVD.

Comprehension fail) that you can't turn off your phone for two measly hours in order to avoid distracting the people in the theater with you, then YOU are the one who should have enough respect to stay out of the theater and wait for the DVD. But you don't give a shit how you affect other people, do you? Of course not.

"If you have a problem with [turning off your phone] in a theater [which is intended for movie viewing, not for [link] the fuck], then wait for the DVD. If someone ever told me that I should [put up with their distracting outside business because their business is more important than my enjoyment of the movie that I paid good money to see] I'd tell them to fuck off plain and simple."

And yeah, the theater cleaner suddenly walking in and standing there during the climax of the movie DOES distract me. It doesn't distract you because you're not watching the movie, anyway; you're just waiting for your next text. Those of us watching the movie are distracted when something else draws our attention away.

AND one other thing, you said, "If you have a problem with someone sending a text message in a theater or the people who work there [sic] doing there job, then wait for the DVD." So, since you missed it the first time, I'll say it again: "I don't even go to the theater anymore, because I can't stand people, because MOST of them are rude, inconsiderate bastards." In other words, I DO wait for the DVD; I have had too many movies ruined by people like you on your damn phone because you've got such important shit to do, that I have lost a thing that I loved, which was going to the movies. I learned that people are ALWAYS going to be rude like that, and will NEVER change, so I finally gave up. So you win. Happy?

"Fucking grow up", huh? When you learn to respect others, I'll respect your opinion about whether or not I'm grown up. Children don't respect others; grown-ups do. If you don't understand that, then guess what group you're in.

Just leave the phone in the car

You are going to a fucking movie already. Do you have to take that gadget everywhere with you ? Who is the boss of who ? You are only there 2 hours tops. Be respectful to others. Some of those phones are real bright and annoying when they are in front of you. People are way to addicted to these certain things. I was at a ball game the other night and this dipshit right in front of us, sat through the entire time with his head down texting his boofoo buddy the whole game with his date or girlfriend sitting there looking bored as hell. How rude. And clueless to boot. I don't think he was getting laid that night. There's a time and a place for these things. This guy paid good money for good seats and wasn't even paying attention to the game doing something he can do any time of the day. Heck, give those tickets to someone who can't afford those seats that will be happy to soak up the game. Plus, Twitter will be so last year when something else comes along, people will just keep up on the social network bandwagon it will just be called something else. How easy we are in these times when we just do whatever they tell us to do to stay cool, when their significance in the big picture of things is nill.

Simple solution

Lean up to them, whisper loudly- so the whole theater can hear, "Turn off your phone." Repeat until they do.

for the record...i haven't seen a "Turn off your phone" warning in a long time...they all say "Silence your cell phone" which I'm more then happy to do. And I'm not trying to say that I'm so important to the world, but sometimes things come up that I have to deal with, I don't see why I should be kicked out of a movie theater for dealing with those things for 10 seconds. Oh and Turboshandy...thank you for quoting me saying "important" when at no time did I use that word...at all...Quote fail.

I don't understand why, if you are so "important", you would waste 2-3 hours of your "important" time in the theatre. I believe it is you sir, who should wait for the DVD!!! Stop ruining our movie-going experience.

You see those announcements right before the feature film like in AMC? They tell you to TURN OFF THE FUCKIN' PHONE. Besides, when you're texting in the middle of a movie, it's pretty clear that you don't give a shit about the movie and should probably leave NOW!

No, PuffCity

You need to show respect for others in a movie theatre or don't bother going.

At what point did we decide that simple respect for others was old-fashioned?

Tamere, you're the worst of all

You don't see what the problem is with texting during a movie? Are you serious? You think that beam of light from your phone goes straight to your eyes only and somehow magically mystically misses everyone else in the theatre? Have you ever had the displeasure of sitting next to some jackhole like you at a movie? CONSTANTLY getting their phone out and texting? It's aggravating. It's distracting. It makes it impossible to concentrate on the movie.

If you can't suspend your life for 2

If you can't suspend your life for 2 measly hours (the arrogance that you think you're that necessary to the world) DO NOT GO TO THE F**KING MOVIES! You don't deserve to. Just because you have this "special life" that you can't take a fraction of your day everyone once in a while to watch a movie uninterrupted does NOT mean you have the right to ruin the experience for everyone else who can.

You're unbelievable.

Seriously, i don't know why people make it their business to have a problem with people texting or commenting on something quietly to a friend. Talking loudly is one thing or talking throughout an entire movie, but i text regularly in a movie because i don't often get to go 2 hours without having to deal with something for work and frankly sending a quick text message a few times during a movie is a lot less distracting then having to get up and leave the theater to deal with it.

I'm a huge fan of ColdZro on here claiming he's a nice guy all the while talking about how he thinks about physical violence because someone had the nerve to talk to her friends about something. And seriously....the theater cleaner coming in and standing in front? are you kidding? fucking grow up.

Not everyone is able to suspend their lives for 2-3 hours to see a movie. If you have a problem with someone sending a text message in a theater or the people who work there doing there job, then wait for the DVD. If someone ever told me that I should put my phone away because the glow from my phone is bothering them while they were watching their movie, I'd tell them to fuck off plain and simple.

People who talk during movies should be kicked the fuck out. It ruins the movie for other people! Shut the fuck up! And anyone who pulls their phone out only sends a beam of light across the theater.

Sorry.. It's a pet peeve of mine.

Preach on!
Kids in theaters piss me off on a consistent basis, whether they're screwing around with their cell phones or just being, well...kids. But what always surprises me is when someone who is old enough to know better still feels it's perfectly fine to to answer their cell phone or send texts during a movie. Assholes...plain and simple.

I love you guys.

Yes, I'm with you. I despise people who talk at the theater. It takes some great restraint on my part, not to resort to physical violence. It's disrespectful, plain and simple. You're not in a f---ing restaurant, you're in a place where people have paid good money to see a movie, not listen to you run your f---in' mouth about whether or not you left your damn stove on... or where you're gonna go to eat after the movie... NOR is it to talk ABOUT the f---ing movie! If you've got questions, whisper to your friend; and if you can't do that, then shut the f--- up and try your best to piece together what's going on, yourself. If you missed it, it's your own damn fault.

Seriously, once, a woman talked through the WHOLE F---ING MOVIE, and then when it was revealed that Samuel L. Jackson's good friend was actually the one behind the whole evil plot against him, this woman asked, "who's he?" I wanted to jump over the seat and tackle her to the ground. I didn't; I'm a nice guy.

I also hate when the theater cleaner comes in and stands at the front, about five to ten minutes before the end! I can't concentrate on anything else but his dumb ass standing there, in effect "announcing" the imminent end of the movie.

I don't even go to the theater anymore, because I can't stand people, because MOST of them are rude, inconsiderate bastards. If I could manage to live my life without ever leaving the house, I would!

PS. What the f--- is "twittering" anyway? I know I could do a Google search and find out, but I expect I'd end up feeling that I had just wasted my time. I'm sure it's just some stupid crap those damn kids are into, which really adds nothing to anyone's life.

When you are in the theater to watch a movie, do just that, watch the movie.

Don't talk to the people you came with (I should only hear the words coming from the people on screen). Don't talk on the phone. Don't text message (The only bright screen I should she is the large one in front of me).

You want to talk or text about the film? Do it when the film ends. It amazes me how difficult that is for so many people.
