Martin as Pink Panther?

10.13.2003

After failed attempts to try and get Mike Myers to take over the legendary role of Inspector Clouseau, MGM has now offered the role to another famous funny guy - Steve Martin. MGM has always been hot to redo a PANTHER film, primarily because its one of their biggest properties as far as brand recognition. The studio has been off the mark as of late, underperforming at the box-office and looking for a hit. Martin himself wouldn't comment but those always present "sources" who just love gabbing to journalists say that Martin is unconvinced and wary of trying to step into the footsteps of the adored Peter Sellers. MGM is apparently aware of Martin's fear and is looking to pay him BIG time bucks to star and is expecting negotiations to begin shortly. The project, THE BIRTH OF THE PINK PANTHER, was written by Len Blum as is to be produced by Ivan Reitman. MGM has tried numerous different attempts to get the project off the ground with such diverse candidates as the aforementioned Myers to RUSH HOUR star Chris Tucker. None, however, made it very far and MGM is hoping they can stop the carousel of casting with a Martin commitment. Martin's next film, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, opens this Christmas, and he's scheduled to begin filming SHOPGIRL, based on his own novella, with Claire Danes later this year.
