Nispel's next

10.16.2003

This guy is going to be one to watch in the future. Not even fresh off the release of his directorial debut (it doesn't technically come out until tomorrow) - the much hyped and much lauded (so far) re-jiggering of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE - director Marcus Nispel has been bum rushed by Warner Bros. to tackle the development of a project called THE EXPENDABLES, with the option of directing, should it come together sufficiently under his watchful eye. The story, which was originally written by Scott Smith (who also wrote MEN OF HONOR, a film with very similar subject matter), is based on a real-life program at California's Chino prison in which convicts are taught diving skills that can provide them with lucrative salvage and ship-repair careers following their parole. The script has since been given a once over by Hollywood re-writer extraordinaire, Scott Rosenberg, who, it was also announced today, will start penning the script for swindle/revenge themed film in the same vein as THE STING, called BIT PLAYERS, that will star Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman and Robert Duvall. Busy guy.
