Cameron shows Avatar

Jul. 16, 2009by: Mike Sampson

James Cameron is getting ready to screen a bunch of footage from AVATAR. No, not at Comic-Con (though he will be doing that next Thursday), he's actually showing some footage sooner. Like tomorrow. Wanna know how you can get it? OK, here it is: you can't.

That was a cruel tease, I know, but tomorrow's screening of 20-minutes of AVATAR is for big-wig exhibitors only. Heads of big movie chains like AMC, Regal or Cinemark. Fox and Cameron are bringing them to Los Angeles to show them 3D spectacle that is AVATAR in hopes of getting the most amount of 3D screens available by the time the film opens in December (the biggest theater near me, a 16-screen AMC multiplex, still doesn't have 3D capability). In addition to screening the film's footage (presumably the same footage we'll see next week in San Diego), Cameron will stick around to answer any questions and try to help beat the 3D drum. Will it work? Maybe all of Cameron's research was to find a way to hypnotize people through film and pretty soon he really will be the King of the World...

Extra Tidbit: AVATAR has a budget of over $240 million. That craft services table must be HUGE.

Give me more

I'm kind of excited. We're five months away from seeing the first James Cameron movie in 13 years, and it has the potential to be groundbreaking and awesome. And it could also be a complete disappointment.

Also, I remember an early quote from Cameron saying the budget on the film will be "not huge, over 100 for sure, but not 200..." Of course it's no surprise to see it will probably end up around $250 million. The guy cracks me up.

With that said...

The fact that they're keeping it so secret can only mean one of two things:

1. It's actually quite lame and they're trying to keep it shielded from the public as long as they can.

2. It's bloody brilliant and the suspense and build-up only adds to the impact it'll have when footage is finally unveiled.

I'm willing to bet it's the latter. And as big a Cameron fan that I am, I must admit I'm a bit annoyed that it's taken him 12 years to make another film. You're telling me he couldn't

You're telling me he couldn't have made a Terminator film in-between then? Even a half-assed Cameron Terminator flick would've been better than the last two piles of drek we were served.

After taking this long, Avatar better deliver the goods.

I'm impressed...

..that they've managed to keep this thing so secretive this far into the game, considering how much gets leaked so far in advance in this day and age(IM2) with the internet being what it is. I mean the movie's about 5 months away and there's been absolutely no-THANG released at ALL! That's some mighty air-tight security there, that and a loyal crew seem to speak volumes for what Cameron's been doing with this film.

SIGH ...

... we get first look of Scarjo as Black Widow in IM2 wich opens NEXT year , and still no dough from Avatar. I think Cameron went Cubrick and beyond. New technology, 3D, yadiyadiyada ... while half of the world still doesn't even know about the movie, not to mention most of movie theaters are not ready to fully reproduce Avatar the way Cameron intended. But what bothers me the most is I'm not even 1% excited about this movie ...

Temporary Solution to Posting Problem

I also have had the same problem brechtsky and luke319 described. One solution is to copy the entire post before you click submit and, if they ask for you to log in again, simply do so and paste it back in the comments box. Also, when it happened to me, I usually can go back to the original message that I wrote and it is usually still there, so I can copy it even if I forgot to the first time. It may be tedious, but at the very least it insures that you don't waste time writing a long

hell yeah weird v3.0... I haven't read anything at all about this movie and I might actually avoid all trailers, as hard as that is.

annoying webdesign

I am SO tired of writing a long-winded comment, and hitting respond only to have it tell me Im not logged in (even though i was) and delete the ENTIRE comment ... PLEASE FIX THIS, its FAR too quick to log you out for no reason, and EXTREMELY annoying to anyone who cares to take the time to consider a thoughtful response or comment.

I literally jsut worte about 15-20 lines on imax and avatar, and its just poof gone, because i took more than 5 minutes to write it-- ridiculous and super-annoying

Self control.

I'm trying not to see anything on the internet about this movie. NOTHING. I want to enter to the theater as a virgin.

Have you actually seen a movie in an Imax theater? I'm not talking about just an extra big screen, I'm talking the massive theater that has it's own section, the speakers that are behind the screen and where the seats don't actually begin until you hop up a couple flights of stairs... because that, can change an entire cinematic experience. It did for The Dark Knight, and even when I saw HP5 there, with the entire end fight in 3-D.

Done right, I think it could be incredible. The thing is,

You know what would be great?

Letting the public know the movie is coming.

HARRY POTTER

I'm still betting a 3-D trailer will be attached the 3-D IMAX print of Harry Potter.

Why wouldn't they?

Here's something to consider: let's say that "Avatar" really is all that, and the 3D is more than just a gimmick. What happens when it hits DVD? As I understand it, the 3D technology in the theater is much different than that at home, which is why movies like "My Bloody Valentine" are nowhere near the same experience. So what about "Avatar?" Even if it looks spectacular theatrically, what happens in the long term?

Just food for thought.

Cameron isn't promoting Avatar's "Amazing 3D!!!" He's promoting it as the first film with a fully believable realistic cg character that you can't tell is fake.

The 3D is still just a gimmick and will most likely look no different than all the other 3D movies we've seen so far. It's all about the Na'vi and the environments. That's what the hype is about.
