Del Toro on Hobbit

Aug. 31, 2009by: Niki Stephens

Guillermo del Toro wants to put the HOBBIT 3D rumors to rest. He also talks about AVATAR and casting for Bilbo.

Del Toro took to the boards over at The One Ring Forums to discuss the possibility of a 3D film, "As a co-writer and director of this film (who works with the design teams, costume teams, creature teams, VFX teams every day of the week), let me be very clear one more time: we are not talking about 3D, we are NOT writing the screenplay for 3D right now- we are hiring my DoP Guillermo Navarro to shoot the film and we are not discussing 3D with him either or with WETA digital or WB or anyone else."

He continues on about the 3D market, "If after AVATAR the market may change and demands are put upon us, etc that is in the future. But if such things happen and we start discussing 3D down the line, I'll let it be know here at TORN because that's the proper way of doing things. But make no mistake- I've been living in NZ for almost a year now and we have not been discussing 3D."

Even though AVATAR will probably do exceptionally well at the box office, Del Toro knows that the way of 3D is inevitable, "Jim [Dorey] has been right in the past and he may be right in the future. He is dead-on about the imminent conversion of film into an expanding 3-D field - at least in most blockbusters and I know of, at least, 4 or 5 major filmmakers preparing 3D films right now. Some of them seriously artistic and ungimmicky!! I've seen AVATAR and I was absolutely blow away by it!! I myself expect to explore 3D soon enough- it is the future, just not my immediate future.

I am looking forward to seeing AVATAR is 3D. It will obviously give true life to what we have seen in the trailer. Well, what about the casting rumors? Del Toro squashed possibilities, "And no- neither David Tennant nor Tom Cruise are Bilbo and we are not redesigning Gollum."

Extra Tidbit: LORD OF THE RINGS extended edition in 3D! Now that's f*cking epic!

What's wrong with Ian Holm? He worked very well in LotR.

The Hobbit and LOTR are for different audiences

The Hobbit is a children's story, like the first couple of Harry Potter books. Del Toro is fine for the Hobbit: Jackson's Hobbit would have been too serious because he'd try to make it a LOTR prequel instead of a stand alone film. Technically it is a LOTR prequel except that the Hobbit was written first. Let's not lose our sense of wonder and innocence. The Hellboy movies had plenty of that.

Listen folks, I have nothing against the LOTR books, nor against Peter Jackson. I know Tolkien was uber creative, and so is Jackson. But the LOTR movies really just didn't do it for me. And this is to Dannywalker17: Thanks for giving a polite response. I wasn't personally attacking anyone; nor was I being vulgar. Some people here blow shit out of proportion. But of course, no single public forum will ever be as overwrought with shameless shallow gluttons as TFW2005.com. That place is a god

No Tennant?

My excitement for this just went way down. I will always think David Tennant is perfect for Bilbo Baggins. Now instead of eagerly keeping up with production, I'll just wait around apathetically for a trailer...

Really?!

Everyone's jizzing all over Avatar's nuggets but we're calling Lord of the Rings overrated? Grow up.

"Even though AVATAR will probably do exceptionally well at the box office" And I'm not so sure this will hold true. Look at how much money they've already invested in this thing.

You really don't think it will do well? As hyped as it is, especially with the die hards? I just figure it would. I don't know if it will reach Titanic proportions but it's not like it will bomb.

Jacks has a point, Niki. It will not be a bomb (like less than 150 or 200mil), but with its budget and other marketing costs this movie will have to earn atleast 400 MILLIONS just to break even! So how much would it need to be a blockbuster, 600 millions??

Gollum is the most useless character in cinema history?

Did you see the movies?

People hate on Lord of the Rings just to fucking hate it.

Not arguing at all with you guys as everyone has different taste in movies.

But for almost the entire time during the films, all the characters are doing is walking around, sleeping, bitching about everyone around them and getting absolutely nowhere.

You remember Randall's impersonation of the films in CLERKS II? He's not far off from the truth fellas.

And yes, Gollum is an annoying character who offers nothing to the plot other than being a complete pain in the ass that never shuts

Anyone who cheers in a cinema to a film other than an obvious comedy or teen slasher should be stopped in whatever way deemed appropriate. Keep your fecking opinions to yourself til you get out the cinema ya muppet. Honestly - bawbag central.

Gollum offers a lot, he is responsible for Frodo's confusion near the end, and almost ruin everything. Its called character development and there is a theme here: betrayal.

LOTR = Overrated!

I'm with Red4, those movies are so overrated. The first one was pretty boring, the second picked it up a bit but not much and things didn't finally get good until the third.

BTW, you all hate Jar Jar Binks...are you telling me that Gollum is any better? He's one of the most irritating and useless characters in cinema history.

FRIGHTENERS is Jackson's best!

He may have had a few problems in Hellboy, but dont forget he also directed Pan's Labyrinth and the style of that movie would fit perfect into the LotR universe

I am looking forward to The Hobbit. But I don't like the fact that the director behind Hellboy II is making it. Face it, people. Even the first Hellboy movie has it's flaws. Compared to what we could've got, it was just mediocre. Yes, Peter Jackson is producing The Hobbit, but how much difference will that make?

"LORD OF THE RINGS extended edition in 3D! Now that's f*cking epic!"

I have nothing further to add. That sums it all up.

He also did Pan's Labrynth. He was the fans' choice to take the reigns by an overwhelming margin. I can't imagine anyone more capable other than PJ.

Red4 - that was such a ridiculous remark its not even worth repeating.

how is it that he's already seen a completely finished version of AVATAR and the rest of us are waiting till dec? come on Cameron.. no need for the foreplay... you know everyone is already stoked on this.

LOL

Red4, you lost me (and most of the world) when you placed the Frighteners and Willow over LOTR. What a laugh.

Anyway, I'm glad to see this comment from GDT. 3D still feels like a gimmick to me. Avatar may change that, but I'm still not sure that 3D is the way of the future. It's been a fad in the past and didn't exactly stick. We all know how going all digital worked out for George Lucas and Star Wars I-III. I'm glad PJ and GDT are sticking to what worked just fine for LOTR. Also glad
