C'mon Hollywood #230

...stop with the shitty spoof movies!
by J.A. Hamilton

I’ve always been a fan of spoof movies for a variety of reasons; one, I’m all for poking some fun at things that take themselves too seriously and two because I love to laugh and spoofs make for some great comedy. At least they USED to. I wouldn’t dream of telling you that the NAKED GUN and HOT SHOTS films were the best that spoofing has to offer (the sequels were rather hit and miss), but these films were funny for the most part and THAT is what spoofing is all about. Somewhere down the line (I can and will point some fingers) this bloodline was tarnished and as a result spawned a subsequent litter of mutant turd babies that (to my dismay) keep multiplying at an exponential rate.

That Goodyear bit from the first one still cracks me up

We all remember SCARY MOVIE…whether we want to or not. This film wasn’t all bad, there were a few honorable mentions as far as jokes go, but not enough to merit multiple viewings (let alone sequels). But we got them anyway and I’m sure I don’t need to point out how asinine, incompetent and just plain lame they all were. This was enough to make most people loath the Wayans brothers, but it’s not just their fault as Hollywood seems to believe that most of us are f*cking simpletons who can’t get enough of these juvenile jokes that would’ve landed you a punch in the nuts even by Junior High School standards.

The scariest thing about it is that it got 4 sequels

What baffles the hell out of me is that despite poor reviews, bad word of mouth and being stereotyped as “the worst thing to ever happen to comedy” they just keep on coming. EPIC MOVIE, DATE MOVIE, MEET THE SPARTANS and then just a couple weeks back I reviewed STAN HELSING which was God awful and really me wonder about Hollywood’s writing (ahem) “talent”. My generation was weaned on stuff like FRIDAY, RAW and DELIRIOUS as far as comedy goes, but like every great stand-up comedian will tell you, there’s more to an act (or in this case there should be more to a film) than just shit, boob and dick jokes. Someone needs to remind these writers of that very thing…with a baseball bat to the skull.

Loved this flick, but Zombieland is my favorite Zombie-comedy

The good news is there ARE still good spoofs out there, but they sometimes pass under our radar because people are too busy cutting up all the bad ones. GALAXY QUEST is a good spoof of the STAR TREK universe, SHAUN OF THE DEAD is an underrated comedy that spoofs the hell out of the zombie world and LESBIAN VAMPIRE KILLERS was a laugh out loud vampire spoof that deserves far more credit than it received. These are just a few examples of what I believe define the concept behind a spoof. There will always be room for debate however, as comedy is a matter of opinion, this one clearly being mine.

I would love it if THIS got 4 sequels

As I said, I’m not against proper spoofs, they’re a fun addition to our movie roster, but I can’t stand the fact that Hollywood is now spoofing the spoof movie genre which more often than not ends up being f*cking ridiculous. I know there’s a lack of creativity in the air these days, but there are plenty of people out there who know funny (even most of the spoof videos we run from FUNNY OR DIE and COLLEGE HUMOR are funnier than these flicks), which leads me to firmly believe these writers can and should do much better. We need a SCARY MOVIE 5 like we need a Jar Jar Binks TV spin off.
Extra Tidbit: As you may or may not know, SCARY MOVIE 5 is indeed in pre-production, slated to stink up a theater near you in 2011. Sigh.

Don't forget Super Troopers, that was one of the best spoofs ever. You're right about the ones lately though, they suck.

The Police Academy movies were good spoofs as well. I'm not sure how well they look now, it's been awhile since I've watched one, but they were damn funny at the time.

Good call!

I loved Shaun of the Dead and Galaxy Quest because they're spoofs with their own story to them, unlike those (enter word of choice here) Movies.

I really dislike the recent spoof films, well what I've seen of them. Hot Shots is one of my favs and they don't do them like that anymore. Another great column, and I ain't just kissing your ass, if I hated it I would tell ya!

Agree Entirely

I wholeheartedly agree with these sentiments. Seltzer/ Friedberg are the biggest culprits of this crap, and really do need to be marched out in front of a firing squad if they do not stop.

Sidenote: Unlike some of the other unruly schmoes here, I think you preffering "Zombieland" over "Shaun Of The Dead" is just fine, but how in the hell is "Shaun" underrated? Since when?

I'll defend Zombieland

Look I loved Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland. And I can see where some people would take to Zombieland over Shaun of the Dead. They go about their humor in different ways. Having only seen Zombieland once for me it is too early to call, but ease up off the man.

Oh and second on Mel Brooks. Young Frankenstein all the way for me.

How To Make A Good Spoof

The key to making a good spoof movie is to poke fun at the common elements within the genre your spoofing (cliches, conventions) while telling a story. This is what the good spoof movies do: they create humor through a story that takes the ridiculous moments in a genre that everyone recognizes and amplifies it. The problem with today's "spoof" movies is that they simply string together a series of terrible "comedy" skits that reference an event or exact scenes in pop culture (from both movies
The key to making a good spoof movie is to poke fun at the common elements within the genre your spoofing (cliches, conventions) while telling a story. This is what the good spoof movies do: they create humor through a story that takes the ridiculous moments in a genre that everyone recognizes and amplifies it. The problem with today's "spoof" movies is that they simply string together a series of terrible "comedy" skits that reference an event or exact scenes in pop culture (from both movies and the tabloids) with no real story threads to tie it together. They make direct references to something that will probably be forgotten not long after the release.

Good spoof movies satirize elements that have endured throughout cinema. Essentially, they take those moments in different genres that leave the audience rolling their eyes and exaggerate it, reflecting the audiences own reaction and therefore making the humor identifiable! How many times do people watch a bad movie in any genre just to make snide remarks when a cliche or cheesy line is used? A good spoof writer and director is able to take those snide remarks the audience makes and incorporate them into a story that effectively makes a joke out of everything we as an audience makes fun of.

These modern spoof movies just takes specific scenes and pop culture events and tries to make a joke out of it. Why should the audience care about a throwaway joke directed toward a movie or tabloid event that will be forgotten in a couple of years? They shouldn't. Leave that type of humor to SNL. That is, basically, what these movies are.

Saying you prefer Zombieland over Shaun of the Dead renders your opinion on anything entertainment-related practically useless.

...no offense.

"Bingo!"

Scary Movie was where the rot really set in. The whole premise was ridiculous - it was spoofing Scream, which in itself was spoofing... scary movies! Somehow that seemed to be lost on the so-called writers.

Long live Leslie Nielsen!

Totally agree, bad spoofs are horrible and make me wince in pain every time I see a new one pop up. Why people go watch them is a mystery to me. And I loved Lesbian Vampire Killers.

I would also like to add that while everyone is entitled to their opinion, many people (including myself) found Lesbian Vampire Killers to be a forgettable, ineffective Shaun-wannabe.

Zombieland over Shaun of the Dead? Good heavens!!! And underrated? By who? It's a classic... not just as a comedy but as a zombie movie. whereas Zombieland barely even has any zombies in it except for the 1st and 3rd acts. Zombieland's director even admits to only ever seeing 1 zombie movie in his life (28 days later) so with that limited frame of reference can it even be a spoof of zombie movies?

Aside form that section, i agree with the rest of your article.

Here here!

This is why a column like this exists in my opnion. It says what everyone is thinking and already says but Hollywood doesn't pay attention to. If any of the ahem "creative" "people" behind these movies actually do read these columns I hope they realize exactly what was said. Spoofs aren't bad. But bad spoofs are bad. And for the last 10 or 15 years that's all we've had. Bad spoofs.

Glaring mistake

SHAUN of the Dead is an instant classic. Zombieland is funny, but is just not as good as SHAUN of the Dead. The terrible spoofs will come as long as idiots go to see them.

i totally agree...all those stupid spoof movies recently are nothing more than pop culutre movies and taking blockbuster movies and crapping all over them with these waste of time, effort, and money. Since the last one BOMBED HORRIBLY, im sure the spoof genre of the zuckers variety is gonna die
