300 prequel?

Dec. 15, 2009by: George Merchan
The last time we talked about 300, we were still unsure as to the status of the sequel... or prequel... or... well, that was the thing; we really didn't know what was going.

But last Friday, the "Hero Complex" blog over at the LA Times ran an entry about Greek mythology and its place in Hollywood (worth a read if you're interested) where they got Frank Miller himself to give a little more solid info. Here's the relevant quote:

The Zack Snyder film, the highest-grossing March release ever, was based on Frank Millers graphic novel about King Leonidas and his doomed army of Spartans; Miller is preparing a follow-up now titled Xerxes, which begins about 10 years before the events of 300, and Snyder has expressed interest in it as a film property as well. Its the battle of Marathon through my lens, Miller said Wednesday. Ive finished the plot and Im getting started on the artwork.

The Battle of Marathon, in a nutshell, sees the first major failure by the Persians to invade Greece and the subsequent rise of Xerxes who then led the second invasion. The Battle of Thermopylae, seen in 300 in all its Frank Millerness, was part of that second invasion. (Read more HERE.)

So does this mean Xerxes will still be a villain, albeit a somehow humanized villain that we see rise to power? How would Miller humanize Xerxes, a guy who in 300 we see as seductively evil and godlike? Maybe he'll show how a man can become that way. Maybe he won't do any of that at all and just make everybody hateful and misogynistic. I don't know. Really, we know less now than before.
Extra Tidbit: Another prequel... thoughts?

Really?

Honestly, it would take a lot for me to want to see this. It's really not needed, and it's just the studio's attempt to try and (belatedly) capitalize on a film that was a hit three years ago. There will have to be something very original to the film to make me want to lay down ten bucks. Just bring on Sin City 2.

i dont care if people didnt like 300, i thought it was only OK, but at least hate it for the right reasons. in other words, dont bash it because it had shallow characters and no historical accuracy. that is like complaining that Driving Miss daisy didnt have enough action, or that a Pixar film used too much CGI. EVERYONE knew, or should have known, what the movie was about before stepping into the theater. that said, this seems like a stupid move. i dont hate the idea, but i dont get the point

I for one liked the first film. I'm down for this as long as Gerald Butler returns.

Yeah, 300 was an awful movie. Guess that makes me cracked in the head, because having an opinion is crazy! Like, Riggs crazy.

300 is awesome...

...if you love juvenile hyper-aggressive homoerotic art, that eschews compelling dialog or any historical realism for shitty, shitty blue screen and abs painted with makeup. If you do, click on the "thumbs down" button on my post.

The first one should just stand alone. It wasn't that good a film, just an action-fest, and adding more to that story is just pointless.

Meh

To me this is like making a sequel to Watchmen. Plus its an even harder sell if Snyder doesn't return.

300 wasn't all that great, this seems like less than all that great. Frank Miller doesn't actually suck like some people may believe. He is a good writer, that's all though

@ DarkElfa

For those that thought this movie rocked are totally thick in the head.

Seriously, 300 was just a shallow movie with 1-D characters played out like a video-game.

I don't know a lot of history about the spartans and this movie certainly didn't help.

Can you compare 300 to Kingdom of Heaven? At least in that one i learnt (or rather had an idea) how tensions between Islam and Christianity started.

If this movie movie is good I hope there'll be none of that FAST and then SLOW, FAST

The first one was bad enough. Must we really have another. Miller sucks.

Love the idea...but

The battle of marathon is almost identical, except fought by Athenians, who proceeded to win because of the same reason the Spartans won,the phalanx.Giant Beasts, the immortals, they're all there. It will be the same movie, which is not necessarily a bad thing:)

Not sure..

As much as i loved 300 and couldn't get enough of it, I'm not sure this is a good idea. Showing how Xerxes became the "God King" would probably require portraying him in more humane terms, or garner more empathy. And 300 was all about convincing us of the exact opposite! Could be Miller has an angle on it, but i really want it to not blow just so 300 doesn't end up as another one of those 'good till they made the sequel' movies.

Goddamnit, Miller....

...just stop it. Stop trying to make new shit, because you just don't have it anymore, as shown by The Spirit and some of your more recent comics.

Stick to producing and letting other ppl adapt your older works, please.
