Plot: COFFEE AND CIGARETTES is a comic series of short vignettes that build on one another to create a cumulative effect as the characters discuss things as diverse as caffeine popsicles, Paris in the twenties, and the use of nicotine as an insecticide, all the while sitting around sipping coffee and smoking cigarettes. As Jarmusch delves into the normal pace of our world from an extraordinary angle, he shows just how absorbing the obsessions, joys, and addictions of life can be. Filmed in black and white, COFFEE AND CIGARETTES made its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival then screened to a sold-out crowd at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Director: Joe Nussbaum

Starring: Alexa Vega , Mika Boorem, Jeff Garlin , Jane Lynch , Sara Paxton, Brie Larson

Plot: In the summer before their freshman year in high school, Julie (Alexa Vega) has a slumber party with her best friends, Hannah, Yancy, and Farrah – and they end up having the adventure of their lives. In attempt to cast off their less-than-cool reputations once and for all, Julie and her friends enter into an all-night scavenger hunt against their “popular girl” rivals. Hijacking dad’s car, sneaking into clubs, evading Julie’s mother, and even a first kiss – anything is possible at Julie’s SLEEPOVER.

Director: Russell Mulcahy

Starring: Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis , Jesse Spencer

Plot: SWIMMING UPSTREAM tells the compelling and inspirational true story of Tony Fingleton, a young man from a troubled family who found the inner strength to become a champion. Based on Anthony Fingleton’s novel of the same name and set in 1950s Brisbane, Australia, SWIMMING UPSTREAM stars Jesse Spencer as Tony, a young man who beats the odds to become a champion swimmer in spite of his overbearing, alcoholic father (Geoffrey Rush) and long-suffering but quietly heroic mother (Judy Davis). Overshadowed in his father’s eyes by his brothers, it’s only when Tony displays an extraordinary swimming talent that he feels he has a shot at winning his father’s heart – and maybe even Olympic gold.

Director: Lucky McKee

Starring: Agnes Bruckner , Patricia Clarkson , Bruce Campbell

Plot: THE WOODS is a psychological horror story that begins when a neglected teenager named Heather (Agnes Bruckner) is dropped off by her parents at a remote all-girls boarding school deep in the forest. Watched over by sinister headmistress Ms. Traverse (Patricia Clarkson) and her staff, Heather is tormented by her classmates and is desperate to go home. But when students start disappearing and she begins to have horrifying visions, Heather realizes things at the school are not what they seem. She only knows there’s something out there in the woods – and it won’t be letting her leave any time soon.

Directors: Chris Smith, Dan Ollman, Sarah Price

Starring: The Yes Men

Plot: THE YES MEN is a comic, biting, and revelatory documentary directed by the filmmaking team behind the acclaimed Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winner AMERICAN MOVIE. THE YES MEN follows The Yes Men, a small group of prankster-activists, as they gain worldwide notoriety for impersonating the World Trade Organization on television and at business conferences around the world. The film begins when two members of The Yes Men, Andy and Mike, set up a website that mimics the World Trade Organization’s and it’s mistaken for the real thing. They play along with the ruse and soon find themselves invited to important functions as WTO representatives. Delighted to represent the organization they politically oppose, Andy and Mike don thrift-store suits and set out to shock unwitting audiences with darkly comic satire that highlights the worst aspects of global free trade.
