King Clooney?

12.08.2003

After the rousing success of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, director Peter Jackson is pretty much a kid in a candy shop when it comes to his next film, KING KONG. He can pretty much have whatever he wants, whenever he wants it (including an insane $20 million for directing). Naomi Watts is all but a lock to star as Ann Darrow (the role made famous by Fay Wray in the original) but Jackson may also be looking at his male star. A report in the Sunday Star-Times of New Zealand says that their hometown hero Jackson is looking to cast either George Clooney or Robert De Niro alongside Mr. Kong, as Carl Denham, the man who brings the giant ape stateside. Clooney seems like he'd be the perfect fit for Denham, the only question now is whether he's interested. But given Jackson's pedigree, I'd find it hard to believe he couldn't convince Clooney to star (or convince Universal to pay Clooney enough to star). Work on KONG is expected to begin as soon as Jackson finishes up work on the extended edition DVD of RETURN OF THE KING, which opens in theaters next Wednesday.
