Inglorious Basterds was the best movie of the year (haven't seen Precious). I'm with you, RebelliousDrone. What was so fantastic about the Hurt Locker? I rented it the other day, and it was good... but that's it. Definitely overrated. Not great and no where near the quality of Inglorious Basterds. And I'm no Taratino "ball licker". Some of his movies I could do without (Kill Bill, Death Proof), but I loved every second of Inglorious Basterds.

Seen all 10 films...

and how the hell "Precious" got on there is mind-boggling! However, excluding that wretched POS, I enjoyed them all, but for my money, the two best films of last year, and they are tied for the number 1 spot, because they are so different, I refuse to even try and compare them, "Inglourious Basterds" and "Up". Both perfect, both beautiful, both heartbreaking.

I saw all but Precious and Blind Side and I agree that all were fantastic but UP and IB were standouts for me. I'm sick of people on here acting like film is an objective form of art. Here's hoping UP wins.

Too close to call?

Not really sure who's gonna win Best Picture this year. Hurt Locker was very good but I dunno, best picture? Basterds was just a blast, with a terrific, Best Supporting Actor performance from Christoph Waltz. Avatar should win Visual Effects and a Special Technical Achievement award.

I really want to know

What did you guys think was so GREAT about the Hurt Locker?!? I just don't get it.

It wasn't a bad movie, but it was no Platoon...or even near its level

Apparently if you liked Inglorious Basterds you enjoy licking Tarantino's balls. I don't get it but it seems to be a theme here with people upset that their movie didn't win.

Having seen all ten, I can say that Inglourious Basterds is easily the best. It's a masterpiece that truly deserves the Best Picture Oscar.

Inglourious Basterds

I've seen 6/10 of these movies, and IG is easily the best of those, followed by Up. Both Avatar and Hurt Locker are just overrated.

How is it that two months ago Avatar won the "What's your favorite movie of 2009" poll by an overwhelming majority, yet for some insane reason on this current poll Avatar is in second behind Inglorious Basterds for the "What movie do you want to win the Oscar" Poll?

Check the old poll out from January yourself [link]

I think some Inglorious Basterds fanboys are trolling in lots of extra votes in order to give Inglorious Basterds the lead in this survey.

Two months ago Inglorious Basterds only got 310 votes on the old poll, yet in only one day on the new poll Inglorious Basterds gets 700 votes? There's some major trolling by some pathetic fanboys out there. Get over it Tarantino fanboys, Avatar is a much more popular movie, and people like it better than Inglorious Basterds too.

People think Angelina Jolie is the most gorgeous women on the planet.. I don't.. She is an extremely attractive women and i can see that, but she's not my cup of tea. I might like someone that is probably not as gorgeous as Jolie, except to me. My point is.. Pick your best not someone else's. If you loved and enjoyed a movie and seen it multiple times then that is in your heart your favorate/Best film of the year.

Sorry but your argument doesn't hold. This poll only lists the nominees for best picture while the poll you linked to had a lot more than just the nominees. Those people that voted for other movies that weren't nominated in the previous poll may have chosen Inglorious Basterds as their pick. The number for the amount of votes for Avatar are actually more for this poll than the other as well so it doesn't really indicate any changes of mind. Sorry. I voted for Up by the way so don't think I'm

Inglourious Basterds!!! Really? People need to quit slurping on Quentin Tarantino's nut sack. How long has it been since the guy did ANYTHING that was original??? Sad day when this movie is even mentioned as Best Picture.

Did you really just ask how his films aren't original? Since Pulp Fiction, all his movies have been 'paying homage' to movies he liked (and no one else liked) when he was a kid.

Inglourious Basterds - QT's best movie is 15 years; Mike Myers' Best Movie in 15 years; Brad Pitt's worst movie in 15 years.

as chess said, you guys keep slurpin QT - feeding his ego. he even made a movie where his characters that he wrote SPOILER kill hitler. thats called ego.

He may pay homage to previous genres but that doesn't make his movies unoriginal. That is like saying any movie with aliens in it is unoriginal because there have been aliens in other movies before it. Tarantino has his own distinct style in his movies. Just like Kubrick and Spielberg, you know your watching a Tarantino movie without even seeing the credits. Whether you like his movies or hate them his shit is original. I voted for Up by the way so don't accuse me of suckin Tarantino off.

OMG! QT wrote a fantasy-revenge thriller, the likes of which, have never been seen! He created one of the creepiest villains since Vader, and he was smart enough to focus on soo much more than just the titular characters- yup, no originality there.

Get educated you asshole.

With all the Jews in Hollywood, why isn't Inglourious Basterds a sure thing?

Oh yeah, I went there.

But seriously, if Inglourious Basterds won, I would dance around and not be able to stop smiling for like a week.

Love the Oscars. Not because of the winners or anything, couldn't care less about those - because since when does an actually good movie win anyway? Who cares, it's the biggest and best show of the year. Great glamour, epic atmosphere, great hosts, great actors and filmmakers together. Can't wait.

"Precious" was easily one of the worst films of the year. Terrible editing, worse music choices, and crying for a minute at the end of the movie does not make Mo'nique worthy of an Oscar. She was not acting, but emoting, which we all know as the JCVD method of acting. Instead fully encompassing a character, you simply encompass an emotion, maybe two, just to shake things up. I have never seen a movie I hated more, that has somehow managed to be universally loved. WTF?

Of course I am happy to see Inglorious Basterds on top, as it is amazing in every aspect that it strived for, but I seriously doubt QT will walk away with anything huge come Sunday. Avatar, despite its blarring unoriginality, is a pretty sweet flick, but I don't think any film based on the quest for "Unobtainium" (seriously?) should grace the kodak theater. A shame that A Serious Man seems to be falling away in the distance, because I thought it was the best Coen Brothers film since Fargo. Regardless, if Avatar wins Ima feel more cheated than Denzel at the Oscars after Malcom X.

I am fortunate enough to have seen most of the movies on the Oscar ballot and I am surprised how some of them made it into the BEST PICTURE category. Goes to show you how slim our pickens were this year. Avatar, District 9, and Basterds for their originality. I know you AVATAR haters will disagree with the original part but I have never seen a movie delivered like that, ever. An Education was solid but nothing special. Moon was easily better than any of the crapsterpieces on that list. Unfortunately the Academy is now nominating films on how much money they pull in instead of film quality.

Cameron is really in a no win situation here. Either he wins best director and everyone screams about how hollywood hates women, or he loses, to his ex wife and the media have a field day... What is the poor guy supposed to do!
Obviously he and Bigelow get along, he has written and produced two of her films... The only fair option is her winning best director to keep the PC 'we aren't anti women' people happy and Avatar to get Best Picture.

Let me preface this with the fact that I am NOT a big Tarantino fan. I love RD and liked JB and PF. I think KB is overrated but fun. I HATED his part of Grindhouse with a passion. I thought Basterds was the second best film last year next to Moon. It had aspects of a badass Spaghetti Western with a central theme about the power of the cinema. Hans Landa is one of the best screen villain portrayals of all time, combining a disarming charm with a simmering menace below the surface and the intelligence of a master detective. Aldo Rain is one of the coolest screen badass shit kickers around. The film is gorgeously and vividly rendered and has a fantastic soundtrack and a great supporting cast. How were you bored during this movie? I was riveted. Great dialogue, great tension, great visuals, great sound, great acting...so uh, what's not to like again? You say no one will be able to argue and yet you hardly present a coherent argument beyond, it was long and boring and there was no character development (false by the way.) What were your top two movies from last year slimbo? I'm guessing GI Joe and Transformers 2 kept you entertained.

its false that theres no character development? We got to hear about Donowits and his great bat - we get to see it for 10 seconds out of 2 1/2 hours. We heard about Hugo Stiglitz - we only know that he was in jail and grunts a lot. yea, thats what i call character development. Way to deliver. I bet youre glad those characters were cut short so we could get an 10 minute discussion of how cool the basterds are from Mike Myers, rather than seeing how cool the basterds are. Zzzz. Zzzz.

Despite the *intentionally* misspelled title, the movie is not about the basterds. I know this was probably disappointing for you, but it made for a better overall, more powerful ensemble experience. We saw enough of how cool the Basterds were without it being overdone and that allowed the rest of the story to develop and breathe more and have a wider scope. The bear jew bat thing is a fear tactic. You see it once and that's enough and word spreads as it did in the film and puts fear into

How many heads did you really need to see get bashed in with a baseball bat?? One was enough, guy. Do you expect Tarantino to develop every character in the whole movie? The heart of the film was about Shoshanna and her revenge.

at first, you said that it was false about the character development. now youre second post reiterates my point that there is no character development. So what is it? you have no clue what youre talking about, do you?

you pretty much just proved that you blindly like movies simply because of who's name is on the marquee, despite trying to portray yourself as a neutral movie fan. your opinion is swayed, as you have a huge hard on for tarantino and if he records two hours of shitting on a plate, youd give it two thumbs up.

On the character development argument:

I agree with SpawnofAchilles. Ergo, I totally disagree with slimbo0330. Funny, his examples of no character development only encompass two very secondary characters... where's the rest?? I'll help you with other examples.

What about the character development of the dairy farmer? He's hiding his friends beneath the house, he's kind to them. Here comes Landa, and with his misciveous speech, completely breaks the farmer into nothing more than a scared man,

And what about Landa himself? The crazy, suave and highly intelectual Nazi, that in the end turns out to be a defector. Who saw that coming? I sure didn't! Aren't those "transformations" character development?

And Shosanna? The scared Jew, the only survivor of the massacre at the beginning, to turns out be a relentheless avenger.

And the polite german soldier, infatuated with Shosanna, that turns out to be more like a rapist.

Come on, slimbo0330... you gotta pay more attention to the movie!

yea, all those are the uninteresting characters. theres no difference between them and any character off of a day time soap opera. if thats what you guys are into, then fine, but dont try to say that guiding light should be up for best screenplay. the interesting characters, THE FUCKING TITLE CHARACTERS, are given the back seat.

"all those are the uninteresting characters"...
I was going to continue this discussion, but then I realized bad taste and lack of general movie knowledge can't be cured by just a post on the internet.

Long shot!

I want Up to win because the odds at the bookies was 50-1 and I placed a silly 5 bet on it.

come on. basterds. Not only completely absurd, but overly long and truly boring. the interesting characters had absolutely no development, leaving us with discussions of struttel. just because its tarantino doesnt mean that its good. no one will be able to argue, they'll just hit thumbs down. these are the people that have a hard on for QT simply because of RD and PF. they guy has fallen off , and fallen off in a big way.

I can say that I am not a Tarantino fan at all. I dont like any of his other films that much at all. However, I saw Inglourious Basterds last night and absolutely loved it. I was not bored at all and for the majority of the movie was completely on the edge of my seat. I dont think it will win, and it may not be the best film to come out becuase The Hurt Locker was an incredible film, but its still a film I would like to win because it wouldnt be expected and it truly is a great film

Haven't seen all of these, but Up is my favorite of the ones I've seen. Basterds and District 9 were both really good, but not nearly as good as Up in my opinion.
