Golden Globe noms!

12.18.2003

The Golden Globe nominees were announced this morning and here are they are with COLD MOUNTAIN leading with way with 8 total nominations and LOST IN TRANSLATION and MYSTIC RIVER both with 5 apiece. My pointless thoughts on the nominees are below each category. Read on...

BEST PICTURE - DRAMA
COLD MOUNTAIN
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING
MASTER AND COMMANDER
MYSTIC RIVER
SEABISCUIT

I'm a little surprised to see SEABISCUIT made the cut. Not that it's not a good movie but I just hadn't heard any significant buzz on it lately. I would've thought THE LAST SAMURAI would've gotten that last spot. It's hard to think that ROTK won't win...

BEST PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY
BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM
BIG FISH
FINDING NEMO
LOST IN TRANSLATION
LOVE ACTUALLY

Good for BECKHAM squeezing in a nomination and it's also great to see FINDING NEMO getting recognized. Unfortunately all will lose to the heavily favored TRANSLATION. But where's AMERICAN SPLENDOR?

ACTRESS - DRAMA
Cate Blanchett - VERONICA GUERIN
Nicole Kidman - COLD MOUNTAIN
Scarlett Johannson - GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING
Charlize Theron - MONSTER
Uma Thurman - KILL BILL VOL. 1
Evan Rachel Wood - THIRTEEN

Scarlett Johannson for PEARL EARRING? Never saw that one coming. Uma probably won't make the Academy cut so at least she gets some recognition here.

ACTOR - DRAMA
Russell Crowe - MASTER AND COMMANDER
Tom Cruise - THE LAST SAMURAI
Ben Kingsley - THE HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
Jude Law - COLD MOUNTAIN
Sean Penn - MYSTIC RIVER

Ben Kingsley apart, the most boring of the categories. Is it a coincidence that 4 of the 5 guys are incredibly attractive (so the ladies tell me...) A-list celebs. Doesn't do much to dispel the Golden Globes' fascination with glitz and glamour.

ACTRESS - MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Jamie Lee Curtis - FREAKY FRIDAY
Scarlett Johannson - LOST IN TRANSLATION
Diane Keaton - SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE
Diane Lane - UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN
Helen Mirren - CALENDER GIRLS

In a perfect world Jamie Lee Curtis or Scarlett Johannson would have a shot but Diane Keaton can start clearing a spot on her mantle.

ACTOR - MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Jack Black - SCHOOL OF ROCK
Johnny Depp - PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN
Bill Murray - LOST IN TRANSLATION
Jack Nicholson - SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE
Billy Bob Thornton - BAD SANTA

Any one of these guys could win and I'd be happy except for Jack. I've got nothing against the guy and I love his work but...enough already. There should be a moratorium on giving Jack more awards. Let someone else have a chance.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS
GOODBYE LENIN
MONSIEIUR IBRAHIM
OSAMA
THE RETURN

Umm...yeah. I think, um...that one is gonna win.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Mario Bello - THE COOLER
Patricia Clarkson - PIECES OF APRIL
Hope Davis - AMERICAN SPLENDOR
Holly Hunter - THIRTEEN
Renee Zelwegger - COLD MOUNTAIN

Renee's speechwriter's are already hard at work. They've already got their opening: "Thank you SO much to the Hollywood Foreign Press..." I haven't seen HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG yet but I heard Shohreh Aghdashloo (who won the NYFCC Supporting Actress award) was just incredible. Surprised to see she's not even on the list. And Maria Bello is.

SUPPORTING ACTOR
Alec Baldwin - THE COOLER
Albert Finney - BIG FISH
William H. Macy - SEABISCUIT
Tim Robbins - MYSTIC RIVER
Peter Sarsgaard - SHATTERED GLASS
Ken Watanabe - THE LAST SAMURAI

A real toss-up here. Like all these guys and their work. I'd say Watanabe, Sarsgaard and Macy are longshots and between the rest I'd think they'll go for Finney. Just a guess though.

DIRECTOR
Sofia Coppola - LOST IN TRANSLATION
Clint Eastwood - MYSTIC RIVER
Peter Jackson - LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
Anthony Minghella - COLD MOUNTAIN
Peter Weir - MASTER AND COMMANDER

Weir and Minghella? Nah. Sofia? Deserving but not quite. Clint? Very impressive to rebound from BLOOD WORK to MYSTIC RIVER but can any one deny the insane amount of work, dedication and passion Peter Jackson brought to ROTK? I'm not even a big fan and I think this guy's gotta win.

ORIGINAL SCORE
Alexandre Desplat - GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING
Danny Elfman - BIG FISH
Howard Shore - LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
Gabriel Yared - COLD MOUNTAIN
Hans Zimmer - THE LAST SAMURAI

Howard Shore is the cool choice to make but I'm goign against the grain. I'm going with Z-man for SAMURAI. Or maybe Alexandre Desplat, just cause I like saying his last name. DESPLAT!

SCREENPLAY
Sofia Coppola - LOST IN TRANSALATION
Richard Curtis - LOVE ACTUALLY
Brian Helgeland - MYSTIC RIVER
Anthony Minghella - COLD MOUNTAIN
Jim Sheridan & Noami Sheridan & Kirsten Sheridan - IN AMERICA

I find it amazing Brian Helgeland could write both LA CONFIDENTIAL and MYSTIC RIVER and also churn out the most inane crap like A KNIGHT'S TALE and THE ORDER. For that alone he deserves an award.

ORIGINAL SONG
Heart of Every Girl - MONA LISA SMILE
Into the West - LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
Men of the Hour - BIG FISH
Time Enough for Tears - IN AMERICA
You Will Be My Ain true Love - COLD MOUNTAIN

The last thing Sting, Bono and Elton John need are more awards to make their heads any bigger. A toss-up between Annie Lennox's RINGS song and Eddie Vedder's BIG FISH. Wouldn't it be interesting to see Eddie Vedder mumble drunkenly into a microphone at the Golden Globes?
