Will Iron Man 2 be bigger than The Dark Knight?

Apr. 7, 2010by: Mike Sampson

When SPIDER-MAN 3 opened to $151 million in 2007 many wondered if that record could be beaten any time in the near future. One year later THE DARK KNIGHT beat that record with $158 million and many wondered if that record could be beaten any time in the near future. Two years later IRON MAN 2 is set to hit theaters and many are wondering if it has what it takes to beat THE DARK KNIGHT and earn the biggest opening weekend in history.

According to the LA Times, just-released tracking surveys show that IRON MAN 2 is pulling in some off-the-charts numbers that prove it might just be able to take the cake. They claim "astonishing levels of interest and awareness" about the film and not just among slap happy fanboys. Women in their 20s and 30s are tracking surprisingly high for the film, a surprise for a FX-driven superhero film. This is thanks in no small part to Robert Downey, Jr. whose appeal is so strong he's dragging in all four quadrants (a term used to describe a movie that appeals to almost everyone: young, old, male and female).

What do you think? Are you more excited to see IRON MAN 2 than you were to see THE DARK KNIGHT? Do you have any plans to camp out to see the film on May 7? And if/when IRON MAN 2 beats the record, how much longer before that record gets beat? THE AVENGERS?

Extra Tidbit: Do you care if a movie you like breaks financial records?

I'm going to see this but man, not impressed by the trailers at all. Lacking excitement.

Who knows?

In terms of sequels I just want this to be up there with Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back and not Harold And Kumar Go To Guantanamo Bay.

NO

Opening weekend will be huge, but the longevity won't. Fans will rush the theatres in the beginning and then move on to the next big summer release. I don't see many repeat customers especially with the high cost of ticket prices and the amazing quality of boot-legs out there.
Rooting for everyone in the film though - great cast and director!

I really don't care how well the film fairs in theaters just as long as it's a good movie. Now, I know that most of my friends across the age variance are really excited for the movie but that's just because of RDJr ^_^

PR journalism...

To be honest this sounds like a bit of publicity sneakery. Someone trying to build up buzz for the movie by providing dodgy info to get a story on the film published.

Or I might just be too cynical.

Oh no, you're absolutely right! This was definitely leaked by the IM2 team. But I still thought it made for an interesting discussion/debate, hence the post.

I'm not looking forward to this as much as I did Dark Knight. I'll go see it sometime, but it doesn't even have to be opening weekend. With The Dark Knight I bought tickets online for opening day as soon as they were available.
As far as I movie I like breaking records, it is nice to see a good movie get it's kudos, but it's not necessary when total crap ends up making tons of money. Spider-Man 3 made more than the first two and it sucked.

Nope.

The Dark Knight made a killing from word of mouth. Iron Man 2 looks entertaining, sure. But I highly doubt it will meet the cinematic quality of the Dark Knight.

I think it already has a "too many stars" issue already. Iron Man 1 was great - but I get the feeling they are going to Transformers 2 this one. Too many explosions, too many characters, too little character development (which is what made the first one so great). But who knows.. I could be proven wrong. Hell, I want to be proven

It may beat the opening weekend.

It will not be the total domestic gross.

I am not as excited about Iron man 2 as I was about the Dark Knight. I am excited about Iron Man 2, convinced it will deliver on all fronts and kick major ass.

But when the Dark Knight was coming I was literally counting down the days. I dont even know when IM2 opens.

Why is it that every comment on here talking about TDK not meeting their expectations or them being more excited about seeing IM2 is getting 'thumbs down' ... oh you fan boys!

I'll probably end up seeing this opening night, but I have basically no enthusiasm about it. I'm sure it will be good, but I have no driving force making me desire to see it INTENSELY. TDK was something I NEEDED to see early and often.

The only way Iron Man2 will beat TDK is if Robert Downey Jr. suddenly drops dead before the movie comes out. It's been said before the main reason TDK made so much money is because people wanted to see Heath Ledgers last role. That's not to say either movie is bad since TDK was great and I'm sure Iron Man2 will be also, but the mystery of Heath's final role is what really drew people to the theater.

I dont think the MAIN reason was people wanted to see Heath Ledgers last role at all. How did the Imaginarium of Dr Parnsassus go? Exactly.

People saw it for his performance, and the fact that it was a great movie - not just comic book movie. Comic book fans saw it because it was an amazing Comic Book movie, and movie fans saw it because it was a great movie in general. Im sick of the Heath Ledgers death excuses. Sure, it was a reason for some... but not the MAIN reason.

I remember watching Entertainment Tonight (or one of those shows) about six months before The Dark Knight came out, and they were hyping the shit out of "Heath Ledger's final role." This was right after his death, and pretty much the whole show revolved around him and this movie. On the other hand, I think the only marketing I ever saw for Dr. Parnassus was on this site.

There was a ton of curiosity surrounding Ledger's role here, I always thought it was a big reason for lots of regular folk

It depends

on how good it is. TDK was a huge box office success because even fans of good movies could appreciate it. If IM2 is equally as compelling, then it has a shot.

If they releaed Iron Man 2 in 3D, you can bet your ass it'd beat The Dark Knight hands-down. With higher ticket prices and because the first one was really good, I'm betting it will break DK's record.

It just might--more people are flooding into theaters than ever, and they seem starved for some summer action with familiar stars. I'd say it will haul in over $100m at least opening weekend, probably lots more.

Eh.. I'm not sure. I loved Iron Man, but Batman is a bigger and more popular character.. plus Heath's death and the Joker role brought in an insane amount of interest. I can't wait for Iron Man 2 but it's nowhere near the hype I had for The Dark Knight. We shall see tho!

Doubt it

The reason TDK killed is because of Heath Ledger and the mystery surrounding his last full role. While IM2 is going to be one of my favorite movies this year, I dont think it will break $158M, but will definitely hit at least $130-140M.

But who knows, could shatter it.

This movie looks great. The trailers have been great and I loved the first film. Yet I'm not that excited to see it. With the Dark Knight I was dying to watch it. And it sucks because I couldnt see it till 2 weeks later because of how sold out everything was. I doubt the same thing will happen with this movie.

Has everyone forgot?

IronMan was and is a second tier Marvel character, yet it still opened at almost 100 million in the first weekend. So why would it not have a chance to come close to TDK numbers for the first weekend? There is no way fanboys where the only ones who went to see IM opening weekend. And it continued to put up pretty amazing numbers during it's run. I believe finishing over the 300 million dollar threshhold. And most of you have to learn how to read an entire article, not just the pieces you feel

I am definitely more excited to see IM2 then I was to see TDK, because I only cared about Heath's performance. Bale has to quit with that annoying f**king voice of his. Ruins any scene as Batman where his isn't just straight out fighting. And now I eagerly await all you Batman fanboys to bash me because I have blasphemed apparently. "And that was the second time I got crabs."

I am more excited to see Iron Man 2 than I was The Dark Knight, but that's because the first one is one of my favorite movies, whereas I wasn't a huge fan of Batman Begins (TDK was a million times better than that film). So it would be awesome if it beat the record for biggest opening weekend.

I probably enjoyed Iron Man more than TDK as a pure entertainment. I'm not especially anxious for this sequel, but want to see it still. I don't give a crap about returns as long as I get to see it. That's what matters, for a movie to do well enough that it can stick around long enough for me to catch it in theaters, if I so desire.

Box Office Receipts

With the rising price of movie tickets, of COURSE the box office receipts are going to keep rising. They should count the number of TICKETS sold instead of the Box Office Take.

Unless Johannson dies suddenly and they find her in the Black Widow outfit, with a suicide note claiming she couldn't break character, I think this one's gonna have to settle for the 2nd best opening weekend ever.

Hmmm

1) The massive hype to TDK didn't enhance my liking of the film, I actually left the theater feeling disappointed in many aspects of the film with the exception of The Joker.

2) Iron Man 2 CAN break THIS record but its highly doubtful it'll make as much as TDK in the long haul and here's why:

a) Iron Man is geared to a wider audience. It's fairly light in tone, alot of action, bright colors (as opposed to TDK's shadowy/gritty feel) and colorful characters. TDK was for a more mature

b) It won't win in the long haul because Iron Man isnt as popular as Batman AND Heath Ledger is not in this movie. I'm not sure Batman 3 will beat TDK either because of this.

My anticipation for TDk was higher than Iron Man 2 for sure BUT I have a feeling I'll walk out of Iron Man 2 with a big smile on my face as opposed to deciding if I really liked it as I did leaving TDK.

Dark Knight Prevails...

I really dont care about box-office results and receipts. The fact is The Dark Knight was and is a masterpiece. It did what all other superhero films failed to do; take itself seriously. Iron Man 2 will be amazing, no doubt, but as a film and as a piece of work that has acting, performance, drama, action, and just plain ol' coolness...TDK will prevail.

Too much competition

Dark Knight came out on July 18 and its only competition was crappy Mummy and X-Files sequels. IM2 will face Shrek, Robin Hood and Persia, just in the month of May. Just don't think it'll have the legs.

whether it has the legs to beat the overall gross is irrelevant, what is being asked is whether it has enough interest to beat it's opening weekend.

i like ironman, but it has a feel of the '89 batman franchise to it. Aging big name actors, a bit of goofiness, absurdity abound. but hey, i liked the 89 batman franchise til shumaker came around, so they can keep going until they make it into a cash cow.

I can only speak for myself and when TDK was coming out I was super excited. I was checking online everyday for news on here and batman-on-film. It was probably the most anticipated movie of my life. The excitement for TDK didn't even start when they announced it. It started at the end of the midnight showing for Batman Begins. Right now, as far as Iron Man 2 goes, it looks fun but not even close to my anticipation was for TDK. It may very well be better than TDK but just saying that the

but i must say i am more eager to see im2 than i was to see tdk because i didn't know what nolan did with the joker character, and i was skeptical about the scaring and what not. while i am sure tdk will prove to be a movie of more substance, im2 may prove to be more of a fun ride.

If the record is broken, Batman 3 will take it right back when it comes out.

Not a single chance. Say whatever you want, but Iron Man just doesn't have the same appeal to the masses as Batman. Plus, remember lots of folks rushed to TDK because of Heath Ledger's performance.

did you not read the article. it states it is tracking so well based on the appeal of RDJ, not the brand, and that appeal is attracting EVERYONE, which is something comic characters don't do. whether Batman has more appeal than Iron Man is irrelevant if the actor has such a huge following.

This is a fluff piece, marketing machine bs. It is called HYPE - and I don't get why people fall for hype every.stinking.year. Rarely does the hype help you enjoy the movie more, it usually results in some level of disappointment.

Iron Man 2 looks good from the trailer - leave it at that. Don't contribute to inflating expectations, don't contribute to the hype machine!

Insanely excited to see this movie. Not concerned if it breaks any records because its going to make an assload of money anyway. I'm just hoping it lives up to its hype.

Although RDJ is super popular right now, maybe one of the hottest actors in fact, I don't think it will break the records that TDK set. I am excited to see Iron Man 2 as much as the next guy but I was PUMPED to see TDK.

sacrilegious?

batman did have lots better promotional aspects like the virals and the websites and even posters, but anyone who says it is blasphemous to mention that iron man 2 might break the opening day record of tdk? you are really fucking dumb...

heath ledger

tdk had the death of heath ledger and how his death was so mysterious (did he overdose? did he commit suicide? was he going crazy from becoming the joker?) ppl wanted to see his "last" performance and see if he got so close to the joker character that it killed him. i don't think im2 will beat the box office record, but i think i'll like it more...

I love tracking box office numbers. The recent records that have been set and broken have been neat to follow. Yup, I'm a movie finance nerd. I personally think it's COOL when a movie breaks a record. I don't think Iron Man 2 will beat TDK, but it will come pretty damn close.

blasphemy

IM2 looks good and all but it can in no way be bigger and better than TDK. It could well break the TDK OW record due to the increased ticket prices but TDK had that special eagerness all over that drew in the excitement. I cant wait to see IM2 but the wait for TDK was just awesome and with all that viral stuff going on and the joker trailer were amazing compared to what we have see of IM2 yet (trailer+posters).
Come on, Batman will always be bigger and better than Iron Man.

I actually wanted to see TDK more than I want to see Iron Man 2. IM2 looks great, but with TDK I was anxious to get any new bit of information I could on it and its villains.

More excited to see Inception

I wasn't too excited to see the first Iron Man, and I'm definitely not that excited to see this one. Sure, I'll be there probably opening weekend but I'm not jumping for joy like I was when I was walking into The Dark Knight.

Honestly, Im big on tracking movies and it wouldn't surprise me with higher ticket prices. However, there is no fucking way that people's reactions to any of the Iron Man 2 trailers are better then the Dark Knight trailers. Seeing Joker on the screen and saying shit like "Its all part of the plan" or the freak like me line and with him in the center of the street as Batman goes down on his batcycle...priceless. Best trailer for any movie, hands down. Doesn't matter what you thought about the

Fo shizzle

definitely wanting to see this more then i did TDK. Love Nolan and his vision is great but TDK was a mess and the only good performance was from Ledger as Joker.

It will be a neck and neck battle i'm sure, but records are there to be broken so Iron Man by a whisker, and around a 450million gross.

Don't really care...

about the record books anymore after that overhyped stupid blue people beat that stupid epic boat sinking movie. As for this, I'm excited to see it, but more than I was to see TDK? Nah...

Don't get me wrong, both superheroes have a great thing going, but Batman will always rule over Iron Man.
