2004 Dreamworks 2/2

12.19.2003

Wow...now that's what I call an exciting 2004 movie line-up! DREAMWORKS has just released its slate of films for the upcoming year and it's quite the doozy. You want directors? How about Steven Spielberg, Michael Mann, Barry Levinson, Martin Scorsese (okay, he's only voicing a character in the animated SHARK TALE, but still) You want top box-office draws? How about Tom Cruise, Ben Affleck, Jack Black, Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Ben Stiller. You want more coolness? How about Christopher Walken, a sequel to one of the most successful animated films of all-time, SHREK 2 and Will Ferrell's follow-up to ELF called ANCHORMAN-- which he co-wrote as well! Now I haven't seen all of the studios' line-ups yet, but my God, Dreamworks is definitely playing for keeps this year. And I didn't even mention the ideally targeted teen road flick, EUROTRIP, or the sequel to THE RING....puff, puff. Read all about it below...

SHARK TALE

Directors: Eric Bergeron, Vicky Jenson

Starring (voices): Will Smith, Robert De Niro, Renée Zellweger, Angelina Jolie, Jack Black, Martin Scorsese, Peter Falk, Michael Imperioli, Vincent Pastore, Doug E. Doug, Ziggy Marley

Plot: Oscar (Will Smith) is a fast-talking little fish who dreams big. But his big dreams land him in hot water when a great white lie turns him into an unlikely hero. At first, his fellow fish swallow Oscar’s story hook, line and sinker and he is showered with fame and fortune. It’s all going along swimmingly, until it starts to become clear that Oscar’s tale about being the defender of the Reef is all wet. Oscar is finding out that being a hero comes at a Market Price when his lie threatens to make him the Catch of the Day. Now he has to tread water until he can get the scales to tip back in his favor again.

SHREK 2

Directors: Andrew Adamson, Kelly Asbury, Conrad Vernon

Starring: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Julie Andrews, John Cleese, Antonio Banderas, Rupert Everett, Jennifer Saunders

Plot: After battling a fire-breathing dragon and the evil Lord Farquaad to win the hand of Princess Fiona, Shrek now faces his greatest challenge: the in-laws. Shrek and Princess Fiona return from their honeymoon to find an invitation to visit Fiona’s parents, the King and Queen of the Kingdom of Far, Far Away. With Donkey along for the ride, the newlyweds set off. All of the citizens of Far, Far Away turn out to greet their returning Princess, and her parents happily anticipate the homecoming of their daughter and her new Prince.

But no one could have prepared them for the sight of their new son-in-law, not to mention how much their little girl had…well…changed. Little did Shrek and Fiona know that their marriage had foiled all of her father’s plans for her future…and his own. Now the King must enlist the help of a powerful Fairy Godmother, the handsome Prince Charming and that famed ogre killer Puss In Boots to put right his version of "happily ever after."

SURVIVING CHRISTMAS

Director: Mike Mitchell

Starring: Ben Affleck, James Gandolfini, Christina Applegate, Catherine O’Hara

Plot: Facing another Christmas alone, Drew Latham (Affleck) decides to go back to his idyllic childhood home to spend the holidays with family. There is, however, one problem: the people living there now are not Drew’s family. Nevertheless, Drew has his mind set on an old-fashioned family Christmas, and the fact that the "family" in question, the Valcos, are complete strangers, isn’t about to put a crimp in his plans.

Offering them a small fortune, Drew bribes his newfound "parents" (Gandolfini and O’Hara) to let him spend Christmas in their home, pretending to be part of the family. Just when the Valcos begin to question if any amount of money is worth being dragged all over town on such traditional family holiday excursions as Christmas shopping and the requisite choosing of the Christmas tree, their eldest daughter Alicia (Applegate) comes home for the holidays, with no intention of adopting a new "brother."

TERMINAL

Director: Steven Spielberg

Starring: Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Stanley Tucci, Chi McBride, Diego Luna, Barry "Shabaka" Henley, Kumar Pallana, Zoë Saldana, Eddie Jones, Jude Ciccolella

Plot: TERMINAL tells the story of Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks), a visitor to New York from Eastern Europe, whose homeland erupts in a fiery coup while he is in the air en route to America. Stranded at Kennedy Airport with a passport from nowhere, he is unauthorized to actually enter the United States and must improvise his days and nights in the terminal’s international transit lounge until the war at home is over.

As the weeks and months stretch on, Viktor finds the compressed universe of the terminal to be a richly complex world of absurdity, generosity, ambition, amusement, status, serendipity and even romance with a beautiful flight attendant named Amelia (Catherine Zeta-Jones). But Viktor has long worn out his welcome with airport official Frank Dixon (Stanley Tucci), who considers him a bureaucratic glitch, a problem he cannot control but wants desperately to erase.

WIN A DATE WITH
TAD HAMILTON!

Director: Robert Luketic

Starring: Kate Bosworth, Josh Duhamel, Topher Grace, Gary Cole, Ginnifer Goodwin, Sean Hayes, Nathan Lane

Plot: Rosalee Futch (Kate Bosworth) is a grocery clerk living in rural West Virginia. But even a small-town girl can have big dreams, and Rosalee’s is to someday…somehow…meet her big-screen idol Tad Hamilton (Josh Duhamel). The "somehow" arrives in the form of a contest—the grand prize: a date with Tad Hamilton—and the "someday" is now. Rosalee wins, much to the chagrin of her best friend and co-worker Pete (Topher Grace), who is deeply, hopelessly—and secretly—in love with Rosalee.

The "Win a Date" contest was cooked up by Tad’s agent, Richard Levy (Nathan Lane), and his manager, also named Richard Levy (Sean Hayes), to clean up Tad’s bad-boy image. Someone should have told them to be careful what you wish for. When Tad meets Rosalee and gets a taste of what he’s been missing in the "real world," he decides he wants seconds and moves to West Virginia, turning Rosalee’s dream come true into a nightmare for Richard Levy, Richard Levy and, most of all, Pete.
