PGA noms announced

01.05.2004

The PGA - no not the Professional Golfers Association but the Producers Guild of America - has announced its nominees for the Best Picture of 2003. I try not to cover every single award announcement out there cause damn there are just too many of them, but this one is important because it seems to be the most reliable predictor there is of Oscar success. In the past 14 years, the winner of the PGA award for Best Picture has gone on to win the Oscar 10 times (the exceptions being SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, MOULIN ROUGE, APOLLO 13 and THE CRYING GAME). This year's nominees included little by way of surprises and much of the same old, same old films we've been hearing about. RETURN OF THE KING, THE LAST SAMURAI, MASTER AND COMMANDER, MYSTIC RIVER, SEABISCUIT and COLD MOUNTAIN were the six films nominated. The reason the PGA awards so closely mirror the Oscars is that many of the 2,000 members of the PGA are also members of the Academy. Since the Academy only nominated five films for the Oscar, one would have to go were they to remain the same. One can only hope that film would be COLD MOUNTAIN, the best part of which was the trailer for JERSEY GIRL that ran beforehand. The PGA will announce its Best Picture on January 17th.
