It's almost impossible to pick one single favorite, but narrowing it down I would have to say Collateral and Vanilla Sky come in very close, but ultimately I had to go with Vanilla Sky. Tom Cruise is fantastic though, so take the favoritism with a grain of salt. A top 5 Cruise films poll would be easier :P.

I feel bad for Cruise, man. Yeah, he's done some wild shit in his personal life that's unfortunately overshadowed his film performances but that guy can carry a film better than probably any other "movie star" these days.

He's one of the few leading men that can pull off "character" roles, unlike Brad Pitt who desperately wants to be a character actor.

In my opinion, he's never been better than in Magnolia but he tore it up in Collateral. And as polarizing a film as Eyes Wide Shut may be,

Bottom line, Tom Cruise is one of the greatest actors of our time and I hope viewers can look past his private life in the future. Knight and Day may not be the greatest film ever, but it's by no means Tom Cruise's fault it fell short.

missing one

How come I don't see Legend listed here? Maybe not the greatest movie ever but definitely one of his most unusual ones.

Collateral

Without a doubt. One of my favorite movies ever, and the movie that got me into movies.

Should change this poll . . .

To one of those branching polls. Compare Rain Man to Top gun and vote and whichever wins will go up against another film. That would be best. Too many good performances.

BotFoJ...

without a shadow of a doubt. That movie, his performance, everything about it is near-flawless. 9.5/10 from me.

I voted for The Last Samurai, however half of the movies on this list I could have easily voted for. Valkryie is a great movie if your into that style of picture. Its more like a documentary and a history lesson at the same time. The events depicted I had no idea happened and how close they actually came to overthrowing Hitler. Cruise has always been a great actor as can be seen here by the great equality of votes in many different movies.

Wow..

That's one thing I've always really respected about Cruise's career path and that's that he always seem to choose really REALLY good projects, and with so many different people choosing so many different "Cruise movies" as their faves, it seems like his choices have ultimately paid off for him with audiences... PS: If anything, maybe his latest VALKYRIE was a misfire? (I haven't seen it, so I can't say)

I think Lion for Lambs was more of a misfire for him. His performance was good, the movie was just a bit weak.

Not a misfire by any stretch, but was a bit awkward in it. Tom ultimately pulled it off. GOOD film and adequate performance by Cruise.

Sure, "show me the $$" is easily the most played-out f'n quote of the last 15 yrs. However, JM shines with such heart and honesty it gets better every time I watch it.

I still love this dude.

Man, when you list all his films you realize that he's really never been in a bad movie, that's crazy!!! Vanilla Sky, Collateral, Minority Report, Jerry Maguire, Born on the 4th, Magnolia, Vampire, and Last Samurai are just a few of my favorites. Whatever the man does in his personal life there's no denying that he makes some pretty damn great films.

Difficult choice...

I really don't get all the love for Minority Report. It was decent enough but, for me, is not a patch on something like The Firm. I was tempted to vote for Top Gun but in the end, I went for "A few good men"

For all the crap people talk about Tom Cruise, I think it's easy to forget how many classic films he was in. He's been one of my favorites since Top Gun, and probably always will be. Collateral was incredible, but I'll never get over Interview with a Vampire. where's my sequel to THAT.

For me it was a close call between Minority Report and Born on the Fourth of July, but I went with Born, because he showed some serious acting chops in that movie.

EWS

Eyes Wide Shut. I could watch that movie every day. It's such an interesting and well made movie. Magnolia is my second choice.

Magnolia, hands down. He's great in everything, but Magnolia... that film is my favorite, due massively (but not only) to Tom Cruise and the only perfect vessel PTA could have ever brought to life his insanely horny/broken Frank T.J. Mackey.

I didn't know if I was suppose to vote for my favorite performance by him (Born on the 4th of July) or film in general (Last Samurai). So I voted Last Samurai, but Minority Report is a close second.

Bring the Thunder!

...the Tropic Thunder, that is. Crappy intros aside, yes, Tropic Thunder is my fave Cruise flick, even if he's only in a supporting role. He's awesome in it.
