Pixar developing direct-to-DVD Cars spinoff called Planes?

07.14.2010

It's not a stretch at all to say that Pixar has been almost mistake-free since TOY STORY was released in 1995. The only misstep was CARS, by all accounts a moderately enjoyable but mostly average film. Strange then that Pixar seems so intent on expanding that universe. In addition to the CARS sequel that's set for release next summer, and the endless CARS-Toons short films, we've now got word that Pixar is developing a spinoff to the CARS franchise. Titled PLANES.

If this were April Fools, I might not even be fooled. If this were a headline on The Onion, I'd probably laugh. But by all accounts it seems that this is legit. Eager to cash in on the lucrative direct-to-DVD market, Pixar is apparently developing PLANES, a movie very similar to CARS, except with planes as the anthropomorphic characters.

The move strikes me as somewhat hypocritical as one of John Lasseter's first edicts as Chief Creative Officer of Disney was to shut down the direct-to-DVD cycle that had churned out such crap as THE LION KING 1 1/2 and THE LITTLE MERMAID III. (Apparently it was an early screening of TINKERBELL that so incensed Lasseter that he fired then DisneyToon Studios head Sharon Morrill.) Word was that Lasseter felt that these sequels were undercutting the creative and financial success of their feature films. An entire line of planned DVDs, "Disney Princess Enchanted Tales," were canceled outright. So why is a direct-to-DVD release spinoff of one of Pixar's films suddenly OK?

I get that CARS is John Lasseter's baby - he wrote and directed the original and he's co-directing the sequel. But with MONSTERS, INC. 2 also on the way, I'm just hoping that Pixar hasn't lost touch with the idea that original properties are why we love them so much...

Let me drop a drop of blood into a shark riddled ocean:
Pixar gets way too much credit.
In my opinion, their only movie that deserves that type of hype is Wall-E.

Yuck :(

Sorry to see PIXAR purposefully choosing to become as mediocre as every other crappy movie company out there.

Hold yer' horses!

I gave this news a 'green bar' because I'm seeing it from a business standpoint. It makes a lot of sense. Kids are oblivious to the difference in quality between cinematic releases and DVD-direct releases. I think Pixar may pull off a surprise here. It sounds like a parody, but to kids under 8, seeing their favorite characters in MORE adventures only equals more fun. I despise Disney's direct-to-DVD titles, but that doesn't mean Pixar will do a bad job as well. Who knows.

Remember that Buzz Lightyear was also a part of a spin-off. As for me if I had the option before watching Cars to see a movie about planes or about cars, I'd rather watch Planes :)

This is a big WTF to me. I liked Cars and I think it is better than Incredibles and maybe even Monsters Inc. A sequel I'm still worried about though because it doesn't seem like a movie that needs one and now a direct to BD spinoff is questionable. I still have my faith in them and I hope I still will when these movies come out. Remember though that Toy Story 2 was set to be a direct to video sequel by Pixar and it turned out great. My guess is that they have a good story but feel that too much

Surprised at the reaction across the net

This is straight-to-video for the kiddies produced by their Canada studio to get them up and running. I don't see how this affects their theatrical movies or creativity. If it helps fund some future classics, then I'm all for it.

I don't really care if they shit out horrible DVD movies. As long as their theatrical stuff stays fantastic, I'll remain a fan. I always stayed far, far away from Disney's direct to DVD stuff anyway.

Disney is out of control. They have absolutely NO problem destroying Pixar, and I'm sure they'll do the same with Marvel. It's all quite sad. Can we just have Newt? Please...?

I'm ok with this as it would be aimed more towards kids. So long as it doesn't impede on their major works of art then I really can't see the harm in this. They have the BEST record of any movie studio so if this means they will make shitloads of $$$ on merchandise then they have more $$$ to put into the movies that really count.
Long live Pixar :-)

Exactly, you're spot on with all your points. CARS is Pixar's most lucrative property through merchandising and children love it, it makes sense for them to do this so long as they have a story they feel is worth telling. It's the same with CARS 2 - we might not want it, but children do, and it allows Pixar to keep making films we DO want.

This will be a sad day

Cars itself is the weakest Pixar movie, let alone a sequel, LET ALONE A DIRECT-TO-DVD SPINOFF. There is no way an authentic Pixar quality film can be made on a direct release budget. Although Cars was not necessarily a critical success, it made more in marketing than any other Pixar property. Kinda makes you wonder

Also to be fair, if there's anyone you can trust in this point in time to make a superior product, it's probably Pixar.

I think they've earned the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe, knowing that CARS is their one mis-step, they're planning on creating a couple of superior films based around the CARS universe in order to lift the quality of the original....

...or maybe they're jut cashing in a bit.

I can see this happening because as was previously mentioned, Cars was HUGE products wise. Disneyland has a "Cars-Land" being built in their California Adventure park, this is no surprise!

That's because CARS is their biggest hit in terms of toys and marketing. There's practically a CARS section in a lot of toy stores.. I've seen Cars bikes, bead sets, nightstands and more.. the kids keep eating it up... that's probably the only reason this is happening.
