Burton does Corpse

01.14.2004

Whether or not Tim Burton's BIG FISH took over the top spot from RETURN OF THE KING over the past weekend probably didn't matter much to him. The guy is in a league of his own when it comes to putting out original movies and sticking to an unique vision of how to direct films. His BATMAN film changed the way superheroes were to be represented on screen, the characters he's handed over to Johnny Depp have molded an actor way ahead of his time, and one of his most beloved movies, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS took all conventional animation ideas and threw them out the window, going for dark and gloomy instead of flashy and slapstick. Apparently, Tim isn't done with the gothic cartoons yet. One of the next films he's producing will be THE CORPSE BRIDE based on an Eastern European folk tale about a man who mistakenly marries a dead body. The animation style will be the same as NIGHTMARE as will the black comedy I'm sure. Burton likes to have fun with the idea of death, something he explains in a recent interview with CNN. "Rather than make it this dark, unspoken thing -- which is kind of how I grew up -- I always liked the idea that it was more a celebration. It feels more positive, somehow, and more spiritual and right to me," says Crazy Hair.

It's unclear as to what will be next on Burton's plate. He's just had a child with actress Helena Bonham Carter who, oddly enough, is his next door neighbor in London, and along with CORPSE, he should be starting CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY soon with Depp.
