Eli Roth's Box

01.23.2004

If you haven't decided whether or not you're a fan of CABIN FEVER director Eli Roth yet, I must encourage you to stop whatever it is you're doing and go read The Arrow's interview with the man. Bandwagon space is filling up quick. Roth's future has become a little more clear with the details of his next project, THE BOX, surfacing in the last couple days. BOX teams Eli with the writer/director of DONNIE DARKO, Richard Kelly, and a story by I AM LEGEND writer, Richard Matheson. The movie will revolve around an unhappy married couple who's life is turned upside down when they discover a small wooden box left on their doorstep. When the bearer of the box pushes a button, they receive instant wealth, but the life of a complete stranger is lost. Matheson's original story was titled BUTTON, BUTTON and was used for an episode of  CBS' 1980s revival of  The Twilight Zone. Kelly talked about his obsession with the story in an interview with About.com. "It was just this one episode – along with a few others – that hit me pretty hard and inspired me. I think this is the one that I’ve always wanted to go back to and try to expand into a feature film. Matheson is one of my favorite writers and I’m grateful to be able to have access to his source material."

This mixture of talent should be interesting to say the least. CABIN FEVER was awesome fun but I can't wait to see Roth experiment with an even darker side of horror. Kelly is also working on KNOWING, about a time capsule containing drawings by a child that could evidently see the future. Each sketch shows the details of world tragedies from the past 40 years. The eerie part is that one of the drawings has yet to happen.
