Scarlett turns Black

01.29.2004

Fresh off a breakout year in which she was nominated for two Golden Globes (though snubbed at Oscar time) for her roles in LOST IN TRANSLATION and GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING, Scarlett Johansson has signed on to star as the female lead in THE BLACK DAHLIA alongside Mark Wahlberg and Josh Hartnett. DAHLIA has been long in-development with David Fincher attached for some period of time but eventually it was director Brian De Palma and producer pal Art Linson who got the picture going. This will be the first time De Palma and Linson have worked together since THE UNTOUCHABLES and if DAHLIA is half as good as that film was, we're in for a treat. DAHLIA is a fictionalized account of the gruesome 1947 murder of actress Elizabeth Short, who was found drained of blood and hacked in two. Johannson will play Kay, a mysterious dead ringer for the victim who become an object of obsession for the two lead detectives (Wahlberg and Hartnett) on the case. All these years later the Dahlia case remains unsolved though there are many theories as to how and why she was killed. Johansson will begin filming SYNERGY for Chris and Paul Weitz in March and will segue directly into DAHLIA afterwards. Hartnett has WICKER PARK and Wahlberg has I HEART HUCKABEE'S set for release in 2004.
