Ultimate Versus?

02.03.2004

Make of this what you will; Japanese director Ryuhei Kitamura will be updating his widely popular zombie/gangster film, VERSUS, with 10 minutes of additional footage and re-releaseing it in Japan. The project is officially being called ULTIMATE VERSUS and will try to fit in the additional sequences four years after the original was shot. How this is going to look is beyond me, all I can think about is the disaster this process has caused with the original STAR WARS trilogy. As for the anticipated sequel, Kitamura states that he is indeed working on it. Plans are for a 2005 or 2006 release for the VERSUS 2 which will continue to follow the frequent ass whooping by Prisoner KSC2-303 played by the original film's Tak Sakaguchi. Before that can happen Kitamura says he has to get his next Japanese movie off the ground which is rumored to be the 28th GODZILLA film. The director won't confirm or deny that he's playing a big part in the 50th anniversary edition of the giant lizard but many a source have claimed to have known this for some time. The film is being referred to as 50dzilla for the time being.

Something I found very interesting is the fact that Rialto Pictures is allowing the original 1954 classic to be re-released in the U.S. uncut and un-dubbed in order to celebrate the anniversary. Anything that can get the taste of Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich's 1998 abomination out of my mouth is welcome. Easily one of the worst experiences I've ever had in a movie theatre.
