I'm not a fan. I fell asleep during one of those movies (I don't remember the title because I didn't care) because it was boring.

Azakaban is the first one that resembled a real movie, after the episodic shitstorms that were the first two films.

Just saw HP7 part 1...

...and it translated beautifully from the book. Which is to say it was as BORING and CONFUSING as the book.

FAIL.

I'm constantly mystified by the notion that Azkaban is the favorite. The time-turner is such a ridiculous plot crutch.

all great

i like the third and fifth books best but on film i'll go with the first by Chris Columbus. I thought all of them were great but the first just has a quality that is better than the rest. Just watch the scene when they first enter hogwarts up to just after the sorting hat. Camera Angles, Lighting, script, acting, its all just perfect harry potter scene

Half-Blood Prince

The sixth film trumps all the others, quite easily, imo. It has the best acting, and we finally get some great eexplorations of the weight being a wizard/ witch has on them as people, plus, I think it's the best looking of the films.

DH Pt. 1 is my second fave.

Definitely Prisoner of Azkaban followed by Deathly Hallows. Cuaron basically set the standard that all the following films attempted to copy. The darkness, the quick pacing, the emphasis on style, the beautiful cinematography, etc. Cuaron started it all.

The reason I love POA the most (and Deathly Hallows second) is that Cuaron understood something that Columbus didn't really get. With a world as expansive and detailed as the one Jo Rowling created, it is simply impossible to get everything

The reason I love POA the most (and Deathly Hallows second) is that Cuaron understood something that Columbus didn't really get. With a world as expansive and detailed as the one Jo Rowling created, it is simply impossible to get everything on screen. So, as a filmmaker, you find what it is that makes the books so loved. The answer is simple, atmosphere. Immersion into this world. Cuaron understood this and that's why there's this one scene in particular that I always loved in POA. It's Harry, Ron, Seamus, and Dean(I think) all sitting around their bed eating candies. Obviously, since it's magical candy, they have strange reactions. They make sounds like various animals and then Harry eats one that makes steam come shooting out of his ears. It's a very simple scene but I always remember it because it is one of the very rare moments in the film series where you realize that you really want to be there, in the film with these people, goofing around. It's a matter of treating the magic as though it's an everyday part of their lives, which it is. I always loved that scene.

Deathly Hallows is second because I had a similar reaction to the dance scene. It doesn't further the plot, but, like the candy eating sequence, it allows us to see these characters as real people.

That's what I like about those films and that's why I think POA and DH excel beyond the others. I like the other films too, but these two are the best. (It also doesn't hurt that Thewlis and Oldman first appear in POA. Oldman makes everything better.)

BTW, If you switch the Deathly Hallows and POA scores here, the order of the movies synchs up with the scores they have on IMDB. Weird.

Order of the Phoenix

It brought a darker tone and was shot beautifully. We finally get away from Hogwarts a bit more, and you begin to feel that the story is finally nearing it's end.

Personally, I think they're all really good. I've read most of the books, but when I see the movies, I try to view them as a reader and non-reader. And as a non-reader and strictly a movie person, I think Half-blood prince is my favorite, followed by Prisoner of azkaban. My least favorite are goblet of fire and deathly hallows (although part 2 might change my mind.)

'The Ipcress File' is clearly the best Harry Palmer movie, why isn't it on this list?

Prisoner of Azkaban always. It's creepy and dark and beautiful. Yes, it fucks the plot sideways and leaves it in a ditch, but if you want the whole story, read the book. Or dont, whatever. I cant live your life for you.

Prison of Azkaban for me because thats the only one that felt like an actual film for me instead of just an adaptation. i love them all but POA felt like a real fleshed out film even though they left out a lot from the books i didnt care cause it was such a good installment. half blood prince is one of my favorite books but the adaptation of that was terrible and Deathly Hallows Pt 1 was a fantastic adaptation it just happens to not be my favorite book because it drags a little in the middle.

Cant wait for pt 2 as that will probably rival POA as my fav.

Personally I like Prisoner of Azkaban the best. It blends the emotion, magic, and terror better than any of the other films. It also has the best music score. Second would be Order of the Pheonix. Deathly Hallows is good but feels like only half a movie. Goblet of Fire is well directed but I never cared for the story. The first 2 seem too much like kids movies now that the other films have been released, but they still have some charm. Half Blood prince was the worst book adaptation, IMO.
