Smith directs Hornet!

02.18.2004

Kevin Smith has hinted for weeks at his official site that he had some "big news" to drop - correct that, he said he had BIG news to drop. And after many delays of the announcement, today comes word that the man himself will write and direct the big screen adaptation of THE GREEN HORNET. According to Smith, the project will likely be the most expensive in Miramax's history, with the exception of GANGS OF NEW YORK. Miramax head Harvey Weinstein acquired the rights to HORNET from Universal in 2002 for about $3 million. At various Universal incarnations George Clooney and Jet Li were attached to star as Britt Reid and sidekick Kato respectively. Smith hopes to have the script ready for a late-summer start date.

Smith, who had such a difficult time working with Warner Bros. on SUPERMAN, wasn't sure about another superhero movie but says he was convinced by the public's limited knowledge of the character. Also convincing Smith to take the high-profile and high-pressure gig was the fact that, "the only person I have to answer to is Harvey." No word yet on how the filming of HORNET will impact FLETCH WON or RANGER DANGER AND THE DANGER RANGERS, one of which was expected to be his next project. Many had even speculated the "big news" Kevin was referring to was a casting decision on FLETCH. But that film seems to still be mired in development hell while yet another project leapfrogs it. Meanwhile casting for HORNET hasn't begun yet but Smith said he'd be interested in either Clooney or Li and one has to assume that at least a casual offer would go out to longtime buddy Ben Affleck (though he's had his share of the superhero limelight and would likely respectfully decline). Kevin's next film, JERSEY GIRL, opens in theaters on March 19th.
