Why did DRIVE ANGRY bomb big-time?

Two words: Nic Cage
Audiences are getting sick of 3D
Amber Heard's recent "lesbian" outtage
Trailers looked lame / bad reviews
Grindhouse flicks just don't work
Too much competition
I have no idea!!!

Because early on they marketed it as saying his character escapes from hell to save his little girl then, they try and market it as a regular action film. Didn't they think we would notice? If I want Nic Cage as a hellspawn, I'll wait for Ghost Rider 2. (Even though Ghost Rider 1 blew chunks)

Grindhouse flicks can work. If you make them for $1-3 million bucks. Machete cost 10.5, brought in 40 worldwide. Looks like a huge profit, until you consider that the studio only receives half the gross(aprox) and they have to spend at least $10M on prints and advertising for any wide release. I've heard reports Drive Angry cost as much as $50 million.

I have no idea if the film is actually any good, but the ads make it look like total garbage! Somebody really dropped the ball on that one!

Marketing made the film look like it's straight to video. I also don't think the industry realizes yet that audiences are being choosier with their movies due to financial reasons.

How was "Ticket Prices" not on the list? My girlfriend and I saw Green Hornet awhile back and it was 36.00 for TWO tickets! We are officially DONE with regular cimema and will be going to the dollar movies or using Netflix ONLY from now on. Hell, the buck-o-flix near us is showing 3D movies for 3 bucks...

For a while now, Hollywood has been releasing crap in theaters that would have only been released on video (direct to video) just 5 years ago. Combine that with shitty remakes of good movies, 3D digging more money out people's pockets, and actors whose only acting motivation is to get a paycheck to get out of debt, and you have the answer to your question.

Amber Heard's "outing" actually should've peaked interest. As for the movie, it was a fun little B movie with lots of guns, blood, and explosions. Since it is still battling out with Just Go With It and Justin Beiber, it wasn't a shocker that it poorly performed. The movie theater I went had most people either watching Just Go With It, Justin Bieber, or Hall Pass and only a handful of people (myself included) were watching Drive Angry. The reason would probably be lack of interest and stiff

Not real sure, there is nothing wrong with this film at all. Bad timing, peoples tastes are the most likely issue here.
3D issues are not the issue, as Gnomeo clearly proves.
Possibly the film wasn't worth the 3D surcharge in audiences eyes? Which is good, the sooner they fuck that surcharge off the better

Either way I doubt her sexuality hurt it's performance.

none of the above.

The point is, people arent forced to go to the cinema, and most only go when they're compelled to do so. The grindhouse b movie has rightfully found its natural place on direct to DVD or cable with JCVD or Steven Segal and although i get the 'joke' and dont take movies like this too seriously, your average movie goer may be taking it a little too seriously. Mix that in with it being the weekend before the oscars. those who are off to the flicks are probs off to see something likely to win an

It would have done better being held off for a month or so. PS: 3D aint going away - at least i hope not, i just started a job in it.

Well i honestly don't think this movie was made to become a gigantic hit & gross 100 million dollars, it takes a gimmick like 3D & just runsaway with it in a good way. I believe the marketing has to do with it also which makes it seem like a Fast & furious or Death Proof type flick & people had no idea it was really a straight up horror flick, hell i didnt even know it was until the reviews. You can't mess with moviegoers that way especially if they are dishing out the higher price.

I don't know why. But I know I'll be saving this one for download mainly because I'm hoping this ends up being like The Wicker Man, Port of Call New Orleans, or any countless Nic Cage gone crazy flick.

Who gives a shit why it bombed....I personally thought it kicked ass. As for the complaints about this being only in 3-D, this was shot in 3-D so it makes sense to be released only in that format. I mean come on now people use your brains.

I just think mainstream audiences saw the advertising and couldn't figure out what this was supposed to be. Whether it was or not, the marketing seemed to give the impression that it was just bad FX and no story. We see nothing iconic, nothing memorable, and nothing really to get excited about. Expecting audiences to pay more for 3D as well didn't help.

Too be honest it's probably all of the above. I liked the movie, but grindhouse films aim for a very niche market and will never make big money, just look at Machete. It was a film not based on a book, a sequel, aimed at kids, award hype, or a major director/star. Cage has been so hit or miss lately (to put it mildly) so I don't know if he can still be considered a major star, and although I like Heard and Fintcher the general public wouldn't recognize their names.

I voted cuz of 3d. I didnt know it was a grindhouse style of flick, which actually makes me want to see it now. Its getting some halfway decent reviews but no way in hell the weekend teenie bopper, let me text during the movie, crowd will go see this. P.S. I liked National Treasure alot, the 2nd one not so much.

Too Bad.

I saw it and thought it was pretty damn awesome. Fucking sucks that it did so poorly. Just judging from how well other grindhouse-style flicks have done ("Grindhouse" included), I guess that mainstream audiences just don't quite grasp the idea of grindhouse movies. They don't get them, they don't know what to make of them, and they don't go to see them. Shame.

For the past decade, movies starring Cage are total shit. Gone in 60 was the last time I liked something he was in. Weather man was good but forgettable and I liked Bad Lieutenant(but I like stupid stuff). Nic,buddy, did you really think National Treasure was a good idea?

I think the failure results in many things. Nic Cage has fallen out of the idea of an almost bankable star. The man hasn't had a hit since National Treasure really. His last 4 or 5 films at least have tanked more or less... people get burned once or twice and become weary. Also, the 3D thing, too expensive and if that is the only option, its going to run people off. I also don't think the trailers have done the movie much help for it.

To be honest, what are studios thinking when they make grindhouse movies (traditionally cheap) with studio dollars?

You campaign it as grindhouse, expect grindhouse returns.

Fun B movies

These days any b movie that's clearly has its tongue in cheek just don't do well. Think about it, Grindhouse was a flop, Shoot Em Up was a flop, even those so-called sucessful ones like Crank, Machete and Piranha 3D didn't really make much money in the US.
Shame really.

The film will find its audience on dvd/blu-ray or to be more accurate illegal [link]

its in 3D

I was going to go to Drive Angry. In fact I was pretty excited for it, then I saw it was only in 3D. That really pissed me off because I refuse to pay for a movie that makes you pay 4 dollars more for stupid glasses and then makes you return them. It would be different if you have the option to purchase them, but you don't. I refuse to buy into the bull that is 3D. I'm glad it failed

Like people have said many times before, the extra charge isn't for the glasses. It's for the extra cost of the movie and projector.

in my town and in the city close by me. they only had it available in 3D. wut kind of BS is that. did they seriosly think only offering it in 3d wuz going to work. there was a group of five guys who were in front of me in line that were talking about how fun drive angry looked then they got up to the teller found out they would have to pay extra for a gimmick and instantly changed there mind to hall pass. which i guess worked out in hall passes favor

one of my favorite Movie Polls to date

Giving us the choice to shit on either Cage or 3D. I must say it was a hard decision. But given that Nicolas cage has given us some kick-ass roles in the past (Face/Off, Adaptation, Leaving Las Vegas & Raising Arizona being my faves) I had to go w/ 3D being the shit-force that bombed Drive Angry.

...and unless it's Roseanne, Elizabeth Taylor or Charlie Sheen ($100 says he will) announcing it..."lesbian outtage" of any kind always helps out on a project.

It's a Genre Flick...

It's not that grindhouse movies don't work, it's just that they don't have as wide an audience.

If you look at the top ten of the week, it's a pretty lamesauce (overall) line up of movies that have a bigger audience than "Drive Angry".
1)Gnomeo and Juliet-Family/Kids movie...nuff said
2)Hall Pass-For some reason people love them some Owen Wilson. Other than him, it has a solid cast and is good for a "couple movie". Whether you're married or not, it's almost too perfectly formulated to

3)Unknown-Standard action/thriller with a solid cast? Easy pickings in February.
4)Just Go With It-Perfect for couples/the poor bastards who go see every Sandler movie in the hopes of a comeback.
5)I Am Number Four- Pefect for Teens too old for Gnomeo and too young for Hall Pass/Just wasting time before the new Twilight movie. Also: Timothy Olyphant.
6)Never Say Never-Fucking teenage girls man....they are willing to kill people for him, so go figure this made some $.
7)King's Speech-Oscar Buzz Period Drama for the Older people, film snobs, or people who see "high art" films like this to make up for loving Transformers 2 (myself included).
8)Martin Lawrence Shitty Cash Grab 3 (AKA Big Momma's House 3)-...There is no explanation. Just like gravity and Tootsie Roll pops...there is no answer.

And so finally, we get to Drive Angry. A paranormal action thriller grindhouse styled genre flick starring the hot chick from Pineapple Express and the dude with funny hair from a bajillion bad actions movies and Kick Ass (FTW!). It was never going to make serious cash at all. Which is perfectly fine...the $5 million it did make is pretty good considering movies like that made less than nothing in their day and could only hope to be made fun of by MST3K. LONG LIVE GENRE FLICKS!
