The Love Bug returns

02.20.2004

I always told myself that if I were a director in Hollywood, I would pitch my concept of a HERBIE THE LOVE BUG remake to Disney execs. Of course they'd toss me out on my ass, but I always thought the film had potential to be a real fun remake. Unfortunately I wasn't interested in doing a "modernization" of the story with a 2004 model of the new VW Beetle. I would do it completely retro, which of course would not be of interest to Disney. I say that cause now they are going ahead with their LOVE BUG remake and are talking to their new poster girl Lindsey Lohan to star and they're setting the film in the world of NASCAR. Snooooore. And who could they possibly get to fill the shoes of Buddy Hackett? The only reason I hold out any hope is that the film is written by Tom Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, two former members of MTV's "The State." Can they possibly infuse this generic Disney remake with some fun and laughs? Directing the project is relative unknown Angela Robinson, who last directed the Sundance hit D.E.B.S. but will move from a $3 million dollar budget to one roughly over $50 million. Lohan has had good luck with Disney remakes getting her big break in THE PARENT TRAP and then hitting it big with FREAKY FRIDAY. Perhaps she'll take a stab at THE COMPUTER WHO WORE TENNIS SHOES next. Lohan's next Disney film CONFESSIONS OF A TEENAGE DRAMA QUEEN isn't a remake but opens later this month regardless.
