Jeremy Renner to develop and star in Steve McQueen biopic

Apr. 28, 2011by: Niki Stephens

Jeremy Renner is a busy guy these days.

Renner has started a production company called The Combine with partner Don Handfield. As their first order of business, they will be developing a Steve McQueen biopic for Renner to star in.

WE OWN THE NIGHT writer and director James Gray will pen the script based on two books by Marshall Terrill: Portrait of an American Rebel and The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon. Czech advertising creator/director Ivan Zacharias will make this film his big-screen directorial debut.

Renner and Handfield will produce the McQueen project with Hurt Locker producer Greg Shapiro, Cross Creek Picturesí Brian Oliver (one of the producers of Black Swan), and Zachariasí producing partner Nick Landon.

McQueen was the epitome of cool. He was an action star with charisma, a guy who liked to do his own stunts, and an overall badass behind the wheel. Does Renner capture even a glimmer of who McQueen was? I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Extra Tidbit: Steve McQueen has some of the best quotes: "When a horse learns to buy martinis, I'll learn to like horses."

How does one lead actor nod suddenly make you perfect for all these archetypal starring roles? Renner is cool, but I have trouble seeing him anchoring all these projects he's attached to. Or does he really scream 'presence' to everyone else?

Yeah, I can see Renner as McQueen (although like some, I was intrigued with the Daniel Craig rumour that was floating around). Regardless, as a huge McQueen fan, I'm a little apprehensive about the project altogether; I'm just not sure it's neccessary when there's a whole library of his films to look through, plus a really great doc on his life.

Tidbit: My favourite is "Quit twistin' my melon, man."

can't see Renner as McQueen

I always thought Daniel Craig had a look of McQueen. Damien Lewis looks more like him except for the fact he's a ginger.

Since McQueen was the coolest man who ever walked the earth I have my doubts about anyone being able to give a believable performance in this biopic (as McQueen). But I say this with a wink. Go for it!

Cool, but

As big a McQueen fan as I was, and still am. I originally heard Daniel Craig was attached and would have liked to see his take on it, but Renner seems to be pegged to turn everything to gold right now...count me in.

CHANGE BOURNE

I still stand by my comment on the new BOURNE movie. It's not a Bourne movie and Jason Bourne isn't in it - so change the character's name (if it is Jason Bourne still) and change the title, now! If that's changed, I'll probably end up seeing it, if not - not a chance in hell. As for this news piece...

However, I approve of this new biopic. Steve McQueen was an amazing action star that future generations and even this generation need to know about!!
