Common sense prevails as NBC passes on Wonder Woman series

May. 13, 2011by: Mike Sampson

David E. Kelley's planned "Wonder Woman" TV series never got off on the right foot. Every other network other than NBC passed on the series. A leaked script was widely maligned. And photos of star Adrianne Palicki in her costume (right) brought up comparisons to a cheap Halloween costume or a porn parody. Despite attempts to retool the series while filming the pilot, NBC agreed with fans and critics and gave the series the boot from its fall schedule.

NBC isn't giving an official reason for why they declined to pick up "Wonder Woman" for a series order but it doesn't take much to read between the lines. The series would've been expensive and NBC recently cancelled two superhero-themed shows ("Heroes" and "The Cape").

Warner Bros., who produced the show, could theoretically shop the show to other networks but considering all the other networks passed on the show in the first place, that seems unlikely.

The bigger question, at least for us here, is what does this mean for a WONDER WOMAN movie? A movie has been in the works for years but never able to get off the ground. WB opted to try a TV series again and with that failing, could they return to try and get their "Justice League" heroes into films and push Wonder Woman to the front of the line? Or will this experience leave a bad taste in their mouth? What do you think they should do?

at least NBC FINALLY listen to the critics and fans voice alike to NOT pick this up since they(NBC)after seeing the rating of 0.1(or however it is) would have probably canned it faster than she(WW) can spin her lasso (if any)

Eh I say forget the live action and go back to the animated. It looks better and if they did some work it could get even better. As for wonder boobs, hand that to a porno production. Im sure that will sell well in the sticky floor theaters.

Hopefully they at least give the failed pilot a release so that we can see it for ourselves, much like the CW did with the Aquaman TV pilot.

As I have said before. They should dress her up in Greek/Roman garb and have her willing to kill folks the first season. Shes a damn Amazon Warrior peaople. She can the learn the "value" of human life later with several different cameos. Also nude sex sceens would get me to watch at least one episode, two if it takes place in a Themysciran bath house!

I'm sorta disappointed, just because I was curious to see just how big of a trainwreck this would have been.

This is good news. This didnt look good from the start. One of WB's major fails was not giving interest to Joss Whedon when he wanted to helm the Woman Woman flick and he would have been the perfect choice for it. A good WW flick can be made but stick to the mythology similar to Thor; WW has alot of rich history to be made into a great flick.

First off, thank the maker. Second, if you want to make a great WW film, don't do Ally McBeal in a costume.

Start with greek mythology and move from there.

Make WW's jet visible and make her clothes INvisible. Cheese factor zero. Fan base through the freakin roof. Cut ME a check for saving the franchise. :-)

A Big Movie

Wonder Woman needs a big, huge, Hollywood blockbuster of a summer movie. The character's legacy and fans deserve it.

Good.

I feel bad for the actress because she definitely looks the part, but between the cheese of the costume and the writing this was a wise decision. A movie or TV show could still work if the producers give up the proclivity to cheese it up 70's style.

They tried this in the comics and it was universally panned. Even feminists declared taking away her lasso and wristbands an example of women being stripped of power by males.

Good Choice

I'm glad they are passing on shows before wasting money on five episodes and then canning it. What should they do concerning Wonder Woman? Easy, copy Marvel. Nolan is ending his Batman trilogy, Superman is getting the reboot and Green Lantern is fixing to hit theatres. Sign Henry Cavil and Ryan Reynolds to multi-pictures plus a Justice League movie, find a new Batman and do the same and have their stories overlapping until the Justice League movie. You could have one by 2015. I would rather

Never been a religious man, but there just might be a god after all. But seriously, this was bad from the start. To me it looked like just when WB and DC were going on the right track they went back down 1960's and 70's campy comic style. A movie could definitely still work, and they need to look at it. And I agree with Smiert that an other world's type tale would work fine. They are doing it with Green Lantern, Thor proved that it could make money and be popular, so why not try it with WW?

I got the perfect Wonder Woman Idea

You have most all of the first film take place in Princess Diana's homeland and make it a sword and sandal epic. Have the film end with her trip to our world. Set-up for Justice League.

Boom. Cut me a check.

Great news!! This had disaster written all over it.

A WW movie could still work fine with the RIGHT people doing it. An Ally McBeal type of WW was stupid from the get go. Do her the right way and take it seriously and not as a joke and you have a decent film.

Handled intelligently, a Wonder Woman movie could still work. They just need to get as far away from campy nonsense as the premise allows. I'd view this series getting canned as a positive step.
