Singleton enters Cage

03.03.2004

Confirming what most of us knew anyway, it was reported this morning that John Singleton is in negotiations to develop and direct the LUKE CAGE flick at Columbia. The project has been around for a while with music video director Hype Williams and Vin Diesel at one time attached. Singleton had been talking about the project for some time and how, being a comic book fan, it was one of his favorites. In 2001 he said his dream was to make a LUKE CAGE movie with Ving Rhames (personally I would go with Tiny "Zues" Lister but that's just me). Singleton had a previous deal with Columbia to develop a remake of SINBAD but when that project stalled, he turned his attention to CAGE. The Marvel comic followed Luke Cage, a former gang member framed for a crime he didn't commit. When in jail, he volunteers for a scientific experiment to up his release date. But when the experiment goes wrong (as they always tend to do) he develops superstrength, bulletproof skin and a really badass metal headband. Once released from prison he uses his power for good, becoming a "Hero for Hire" - as the subtitle for the comic goes. A draft of the script exists but it's unclear whether Singleton, as he develops his vision of the comic, would commission an entirely new version.
