Production has begun on The Dark Knight Rises

May. 19, 2011by: Niki Stephens

Finally, production has begun on THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Warner Bros. sent out a fairly long press release that principal photography has started on the epic conclusion of Christopher Nolan's BATMAN trilogy.

The press release gives us everything except for a plot. Not that I figured one would just been there waiting for me, but I'm still really curious how this chapter is going to end. Especially with the inclusion of two characters I've never heard of before (and were not found in my trusty Batman encyclopedia): Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard) and John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Well, there was that coloring book page that shows the Joker stealing little Johnny Blake's report card (via Bad Ass Digest).

Comb through the press release below.

"Principal photography has begun on Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ “The Dark Knight Rises,” the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy."

"Leading an all-star international cast, Oscar® winner Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) again plays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”), as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake.Returning to the main cast, Oscar® winner Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules”) plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”) reprises the role of Lucius Fox."

"In helming “The Dark Knight Rises,” Christopher Nolan is utilizing IMAX® cameras even more extensively than he did on “The Dark Knight,” which had marked the first time ever that a major feature film was partially shot with IMAX® cameras. The results were so spectacular that the director wanted to expand the use of the large-format cameras for this film."

"The screenplay for “The Dark Knight Rises” is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is being produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster “The Dark Knight.” The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. “The Dark Knight” is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane."

"Behind the scenes, “The Dark Knight Rises” reunites the director with several of his longtime collaborators, all of whom worked together on the “The Dark Knight.” The creative team includes director of photography Wally Pfister, who recently won an Oscar® for his work on Nolan’s “Inception”; production designer Nathan Crowley; editor Lee Smith; and Oscar®-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (“Topsy-Turvy”). In addition, Paul Franklin and Chris Corbould, who both won Oscars® for the effects in “Inception,” will supervise the visual and special effects, respectively. The music will be composed by Oscar® winner Hans Zimmer (“The Lion King”)."

"The locations for “The Dark Knight Rises” span three continents and include the American cities of Pittsburgh, New York and Los Angeles, as well as sites in India, England and Scotland. “The Dark Knight Rises” is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures, in association with Legendary Pictures. Slated for release on July 20, 2012, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company."

Extra Tidbit: Anyone feel like Two-Face should have had a part in this one? Or is it better that they aren't bringing him back? (As far as I know anyway. That Nolan is tricky.)

Anne Hathaway Action Figures

Can't wait to get my hands on one...or two! Also can't wait for the inevitable leaked pictures of the new character designs and costumes! The Batman in my avatar wholly approves.

I don't think Two Face is dead at the end of TDK but that just me. If he is alive, he might have a small role where he's put in Gotham prison or Arkham Asylum and play some "Hannibal Lecter & Clarice Starling" game with Batman in order to get to Bane or whoever the villain is.

I loved everything about TDK including the way they handled Two Face. I'm excited about this one but they actually (Chris Nolan, Crew and Bale) began shooting in India on May 6th. India? Does this mean that he'll go there to get healed by some mystic chick after getting his ass handed to him by Bane like in the Knightfall story?

I wish people would stop saying 'in Nolan we trust'. It sounds so corny and dumb.

But I am VERY excited about this movie!

I wanted Two-Face to be built in TDK and be set up as the focal villain! However I am SO PUMPED to see Nolan's vision of Bane brining justice to the character!!

Godspeed Mr. Nolan and Crew. Breaking the third comic book movie curse is no easy feat but if anyone can do it I hope it's you. Also, no Chicago, what gives?

Yeah, the rushed Two Face arch was the only thing I disliked about TDK. I'm excited about this news and will proceed in my attempt to watch no trailers or updates on this fine site. Or the crap ones.

Why not any Chicago shoots? I still have faith in the Nolan team. No doubt the next couple of months will be fun.

Very very good. Hopefully the news hounds from this and other sites will give the production a break and not sniff around for spoilers. But I doubt it.

You know, we've never seen a comic book film that is the final chapter of a story. Generally, we just get a sequel that does poorly (Superman 4, Spiderman 3), and the series gets rebooted. The closest we got was X-men 3. It'll be great to see Nolan close out his trilogy. This will be THE movie of 2012.

This is great, and I think we, as fans, need to stop comparing it to The Dark Knight. I'm pretty confident he'll give us a satisying conclusion to his Batman trilogy.. it just won't have the same aura around it that The Dark Knight did.

The Joker is just too cool and too iconic of a character, and what Ledger did with him was brilliant. Add his death to the equation and TDK was just miles and miles of epic anticipation. TDKR is a different type of movie with a different type of anticipation.

Cool I guess, for the people who like these movies. I don't care much for him or his movies, but to each their own. The only Nolan movie I've seen is Batman Begins, and I didn't care much for it. I may check out some of his other work sometime in the future. Not in a big hurry though. Hopefully the fans of these movies are pleased. I think I'll pass on this though.

Fair enough. Yes I have only seen Batman Begins from start to finish, and wasn't terribly impressed, but I also saw about the first ten minutes or so of Dark Knight, and I found it to be fairly boring. I then decided to change the channel to something else. I'm not the most well-versed in his films, and that may change one of these days if and when I check out Memento, but I'm in no real hurry. It's not going anywhere, and neither are any of his other films. I'm not talking poorly about

I'm not talking poorly about the man or his work, and I hope it turns out well for his fans, but I just don't have much interest in it. Whatever floats your boat. There's something out there for all of us. I'd much rather watch something like Frankenhooker or Videodrome instead, but that's just me. Hope the movie ends up being good for all you fans out there, but I doubt I'll be checking it out, at least in theatres.

Hey man, whatever floats your boat. To each their own. I have never seen Videodrome but you know, maybe one day I will. Maybe I won't. But I know it will be there for me. I personally like Nolan's movies. If you don't, thats totally cool man. I appreciate you hoping it's good for me.
