What Did You Think? We want your Super 8 review!

Jun. 10, 2011by: Mike Sampson

SUPER 8 is a weird movie. And I'm not talking about the movie itself but more the reaction people are having to it. Some people flat-out love it (including our own JimmyO and The Arrow) but many others have issues with the film (specifically the last act). Yet the film is cruising along on Rotten Tomatoes and was recently "Certified Fresh" with an 83% approval rating. (But if you look a little closer, some of the "fresh" ratings don't read much like positive reviews to me...)

But SUPER 8 seems to be a real crowd-pleasure, judging by the reaction to some of the early sneak fan screenings. The film has been teasing us for months and months and finally today it hits theaters. With so much excitement around the film we want to know what YOU think! As we often do, we're going to leave this article up all weekend with the Strike Backs open and encourage you to post YOUR review of SUPER 8. If you're so inclined, you can even post a review to your Movie Fan Central profile. You can even check the average rating of all the MFC reviews of SUPER 8 here (so far, it's averaging 8.6/10 after 12 reviews).

I say this often but it's even more important with this movie: PLEASE NO SPOILERS. And, as always, no attacking, flaming or insulting other users.

The movie was absolutely great. I just wish there was a connection between this and cloverfield.

Perhaps the Alien's species in this film uses the species of alien in cloverfield as a doomsday device ...

Great movie

But not amazing. Then again, I am no longer 12, and I think if I was, it would have blown me away. That being said, everything was terrific, until the reveal. I think that this movie (as with others) should pull back and keep some mystery, let your imagination fill in the (scary) details. It's like reading a book, you have this great image in your head, but on screen, it's someone else's image. I think 'Cloverfield' did a great job of that. YOu never really saw too much of the monster, enough,

Also, just to throw it in there, speaking of 'Cloverfield', it would have been a fun surprise to see a connection with with 'Super 8".

Pretty sure there's a connection.

EDIT: nevermind, read that there's no connection from an interview. Bummer.

Great

Just got back from seeing it, and I really really enjoyed it. I felt the connection between the kids, the parents, the tragedy between them, and the whole sci-fi aspect. All were great and blended together really well to make a great time at the movies. While I can see some people not liking the ending, it worked for me. Favorite movie of the year so far.

The film was profoundly deep, in which some people like myself can sympathize with. The elements in which these kids held in the film were adult-like, and they managed to handle a pretty strong script. JJ Abrams has a knack for using science fiction to further a story. It's easy to say that than to actually do, but most stories lack that foundation these days.

*SPOILERS*:

The alien story is definitely a backdrop to what is happening with the kids and their parents. But what a magical movie going experience! This film made me remember the innocence of childhood crushes, when just a holding a girl's hand was like the most amazing thing I could ever do.

All the best of Spielberg and Abrams is blended into one film and it totally worked for me.

The train crash sequence, the gas station sequences, the military bus sequence and the alien's ship climax were all incredible. The alien was revealed in just the right amount of strokes. Finally seeing into it's eyes at the end was a great payoff.

4 Stars! TWO THUMBS UP!! I feel an already better then average summer for movies going has hit a peak that's going to be really difficult to top.

Here's the thing: I loved the kids in the movie. I loved their parents. I loved that they were making a movie and I loved the drama with their parents and in their lives. It was all fantastic.

I just hated the monster. I still really, really enjoyed the movie, but once you start to figure more out about the monster, I kinda didn't care as much anymore.

You can disagree with me all you like, but I actually did really enjoy myself with this movie.

Over-analyzing Kills The Best of Films.

Like all other summer blockbusters, Super 8 will be analyzed to no end. Some will love it, some will hate it, and some will pretend to be both depending on the crowd they're in. Personally, I enjoyed it for what it was : an entertaining piece of cinema that paid homage to so many great cinematic experiences of old. Super 8 made me feel like a kid again. The chemistry between the kids, the score, and the flow of the movie itself was so nostalgic to a point where I forgot my own age. And I'm an

The chemistry between the kids, the score, and the flow of the movie itself was so nostalgic to a point where I forgot my own age. And I'm an Abrams fan. Bits and pieces of Lost (the music) coupled with intense destruction scenes like only Abrams can deliver made me love the movie quite a lot.

That being said, it isn't mindblowing. It isn't the return of classic cinema or the revolution of our time. It is pure fun, a great cinematic experience, and an original piece of work that sends salutations back to the movies that helped create it. It will definitely set the trend for more to come, as I'm sure there are those who would love to follow in JJ's footsteps and make movies like the ones they grew up watching and drawing inspiration from.

Overall, I loved it. It isn't groundbreaking and it isn't surreal. It's just fun and a well-needed breath of fresh air in Hollywood's current landscape. A title in my Blu-Ray collection for sure.

I speak for myself when I say it had it's flaws, and mostly because it felt like something I had already seen, the alien design reminded me of the monster in Cloverfield and I thought the aliens backstory was cut short, they foucused more on the kids' journey, but overall I thought it was a fun, amazing ride and it ranks up there as one of this years best films.

I thought it was very good. Not great. I still enjoyed myself a great deal, though. The kids reminded me of me and my friends at that age, not giving a shit, just going out and making movies. We never stumbled on something nearly this awesome, though. Although my main problem with the movie is that the monster wasn't actually that awesome. And the ending was... kind of awful. I can forgive it, though, because the rest of it was so very good.

JJ channels Speilberg for my fav of '11

This 'IS' movie magic. A blast from our generations past, when we'd gaze upon the screen with glassy-eyed wonder. A stately amalgam of Close Encounters, Stand By Me and Iron Giant but distinct from all its forebears. Recaptures everything we love about adventure, friendship and giant monsters in one mega-bundle. Speaks to anyone with a childhood steeped in playful imagination. JJ has completely transformed into today's Spielberg. What I mean to say is for me, it was HOLYSHITAMAZING!

GOOD, BUT CHEEZ WIZ ENDING

Just got back from Super 8. As my friend Jaime put it, "I felt like I was a kid at the movies again, back in the 80's" The dynamic between the group of kids in the film is very Goonies-esque. Obvious homages abound to E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, etc... J.J. Abrams (once again) loves that lens flare. The train wreck is spectacular and there's good build up of suspense by not showing the ******* until the end. I liked it a lot right up to the Cheez Wiz finale, which unfortunately

Best movie I've seen in quite sometime. I really loved the score and the train sequence was literally breathtaking. Acting was spot on from the kids and cinematography was gorgeous. Most of all, I didnt know the entire plot of a movie before going to see it. God i miss that. Perfect score from me.

WHAT THE F?

If I was 12 this wouldve been my favorite movie ever. Unfortunately Im 32 and i saw Super 8 as a kid when it was less effects and violence and simply called E.T. I hope Abrams learnes to stay away from Spielberg because u can see his influence during this film. I was expecting more of a Cloverfield-esque picture which it started off as but steadily plummets into a childish Spielberg realm, which I'm tried of being dragged into. The one true and remarkable thing about this movie was the kids,

I need redemption, I need Cloverfield 2 so this rancid Super 8 taste in my mouth can be cleansed.

WHY does this film, which is completely unoriginal and has been overdone a million times before, get a free pass and so much praise, and yet the same people bitch and complain about the endless supply of remakes and sequels? RIGHT.

People praise the pirates movies too WHY. beats me. but hey dude that's what makes the world go around. :)

On a scale of 1-10 I would give it a 7. It didn't live up to all the hype that it was getting. The cast was great though.

I liked it, but even though it gets compared with Spielberg's ET and Close Encounters, it also has a lot in common with his War of the Worlds based on the nature of the story. While I appluad the originality of combining these two ideas,I don't think they fully came together for me to make this a classic. Still, it was a good movie and one I look forward to getting on Blu-ray.

I thought this movie...

Was a wonderful homage to 80 films, it really capture the 70's and such. And was a wonderful homage to spielberg films. it was like close encounter's meet's clover. but was also something very different. I left the theater with a huge happy smile. something thats hard to do these days. Prob the best summer movie I've seen so far. ALl the other's so far are good too expect pirates haven't seen never will I'm not into that kind of stuff. I think there all the same and very boring. But deft check

Very Enjoyable

Abrams didn't quite capture the Spielberg lightning in a bottle, but he gave it a damn good try and came close. But given the glut of sequels, superheroes and remakes, this was a breath of fresh air and I was able to just sit back and enjoy it for what it was. A fun time at the movies!

Seen It Twice

Take "E.T.", Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind","The Goonies, "Jaws", and "Poltergeist". Add some "Thing From Another World" and "Stand By Me" and you get "Super 8". The child stars are great and the adults are the adults, but then the first screening I thought the director was confused if he wanted to make a coming of age story or if he wanted to make a sci-fi story. After the 2nd viewing I understood that he was making a story for my generation, that grew up with this story. The perfect

Very Good

I had an absolute blast, and unlike X-Men last weekend I was really able to look past this movie's few flaws and just enjoy the shit out of this movie. Wished more time was given to the father/son relationship. And yeah the final act didn't quite live up to the stellar first 2/3 of the movie. But still a great time and pretty damn good flick.

Wow!! 'Super 8' was a blast! It took a little while for the movie to get going, but once it did, it rarely let up. I think one of my favorites has to be the kids. I mean, it was cool to see kids who actually had energy and full of imagination instead of the dumb kids we see in movies and on TV nowadays that do nothing but spit one-liners out and see which one can be dumber than the other. So far, I think this is my second favorite summer movie just behind 'X-Men: First Class'.

The train crash was breathtaking. When the nostalgia feeling hit, I got goosebumps. It didn't feel as adventurous as the Amblin of old, but exciting none the less. I loved the zombie film and the nod to Romero.

Good movie

As happens often, when the hype is great, the movie hardly stands a chance to live up to it. I read great reviews for Super 8, and the viewing did survive the hype, but just barely. I think a second viewing would actually help, but over all, a good movie.

Loved it. It brought me back to all those old Amblin films that I watched as a kid, but I still felt it had a voice of it's own. I don't think I felt it would be the classic that some people though it would be, but it's probably on my list of top ten for the year so far.

Agree with consensus - it's not really a classic in its own right, but it was so nice to sit in a theater and watch something like "Close Encounters" or "E.T." for the first time again. They don't make movies like this anymore (well, apart from this one, ha) - movies that have this much patience or restraint. It ought to make for a good "Unpopular Opinion" column someday, perhaps from someone who sees it as a contemporary entity as opposed to something that relies on nostalgia value.

The chemistry between the kids was fantastic and the action/attack scenes were really fun and suspenseful! Some homage-ness? yes. Still a great flick? yup.

Saw this last night. Was pretty good, but I felt there was a certain something missing. I don't know what it was, JJ did a great job with everything, but inevitiably you compare it to other Amblin films and I never felt the same way with Super 8 as I did with those. Still got a few shivers down the spine a few times though. Loved the kids and thought Fanning was gonna be annoying as hell, but she was really good, as was the main kid.
As someone said below the alien is basically a baby

As someone said below the alien is basically a baby cloverfield. It was also a bit hard to share comparsion for this alien that has ripped the town apart and killed people left and right.
Had some issues with story elements that were a bit convienient (won't mention them for spoilers)
Worth seeing though, very good film.

Loved every minute

Saw this at a pre-screening on Monday and again last night with friends. Absolutely loved the movie. As everyone has been said, very much like the 80's amblin movies and I see it as a great thing (opposed to some critics who see it as a negative). The kids were fantastic, the movie had great humor, scares, suspense, and a lot of heart. There were some plot issues with the sci-fi storyline, but it gave me enough that I didn't care - the movie was just too enjoyable to wipe a smile away from my

on the fence

I liked it for the most part, but it got too campy for me at the end. Well made but it felt like he started the movie for one audience and ended it for another. I am a big fan of Abrams's work, but it fell flat for me at the end.

It was good overall, but not great. It had some pacing issues and the creature was pretty much the same from Cloverfield, but smaller. However, the performances were really good, especially the kids, and the nostalgic feeling created was fun. Here's the full review:

It doesn't look exactly like it. Don't worry. It won't be spoiled.

Good but, not a classic

Super 8 is J.J. Abrams' homage to the 80s coming of age genre flicks like E.T., Stand By Me, Monster Squad, etc. and while it is an entertaining homage, it isn't an overwhelming one. Like all copies, there is something lacking in Super 8 that keeps it from joining the ranks of the films it so lovingly tries to recreate. Technically, it is an extremely well made movie, Abrams is one of the best technical directors out there. The FX are state of the art. But, FX do not a classic make. And, sadly,

Technically, it is an extremely well made movie, Abrams is one of the best technical directors out there. The FX are state of the art. But, FX do not a classic make. And, sadly, Super 8 is no classic. The main characters are likeable and the military bad guys appropriately slimy but, they are all just representations of characters we've seen before in those 80s classics. None of them are particularly strong or stand out to any degree. They serve their purpose in the story but, they are not memorable like E.T.'s Elliot or even Goonies' Chunk. Even the alien creature is nicely designed but, ultimately just another generic monster. It's never given a personality. The story of a group of young wannabe filmmakers coming up against an escaped extraterrestrial creature is functional enough but, we've seen it all before, the misunderstood alien, the bad guy military officer, the cop's kid... all been done before. And while Super 8 did entertain, it's doesn't have the charm or that "special something" that made the films it honors so special. This actually comes as a surprise as Abrams' Star Trek reboot had all those things right, characters that were familiar yet new, a story and feel that was both classic Trek and yet up to date, so, why Abrams didn't accomplish the same here, is a bit of a mystery. I still recommend it as an entertaining summer flick but, like that homemade ice cream on a hot night, it's good while it lasts but, you've forgotten about it by the next day.
