Don't expect a refund for The Tree of Life from The Avon Theater

Jun. 24, 2011by: Niki Stephens

It's fair to say that THE TREE OF LIFE has boggled some minds. Either it's too over the top or people are giving director Terrence Malick praise for his visionary effort.

I have yet to hear about anyone actually walking out on the film, but The Avon Theater in Stamford, CT are putting their foot down on patrons who take off. The theater decided to offer no refunds just because filmgoers "don't get it". The sign they put up is great and I commend them for standing up for the film.

Check it out below.

I am definitely cool with the response, that's damn hilarious.
But i'm giving this a bad idea because it's sad to think that so many people disliked a good film that the theater even had to do this. sad to me at least.
i thought it was a damn good movie. i also saw it stoned though.

I'm with the theater on this one. I don't think people should get refunds just because they don't like a movie. You pays your money, you takes your chances.

Saw it yesterday...

Frakkin' loved it like I hoped to. I am finding it silly that those who don't like it are blaming those who do on not really getting it and just trying to be "cool" or something. What I really don't get though is why people have to be so disrespectful in movies. I've seen plenty of films in theaters that I wound up hating and I sat there quietly throughout. With the two films I've walked out of, I did so quietly. At my Tree of Life showing I had three people in the rows behind me making dumb

At my Tree of Life showing I had three people in the rows behind me making dumb comments throughout the ENTIRE thing (one of whom even checked her voicemail partway through on what may as well have been speakerphone), walk-outs shouting the cliched "Dumbest movie ever!!" and when it was all over a bunch of people laughed and said "that's it?" How about next time you folks feel like having a 2 and a half hour conversation you stay home, eh? I don't talk through your movies, please kindly stfu through mine or don't see them at all. I might mention I had very similar audiences both times I went to "The New World". Avon has the right idea even though it may hinder business a bit - people need to read up on films before seeing them. Just because it's Pitt and Penn doesn't mean it's gonna be a Fight Club/Mystic River hybrid.

I've never seen so much intellectual anti-posturing for such a mild and inoffensive film. Rarely has huffily abandoning a piece of art and shouting the word 'pretension' with no idea what you're talking about been so readily accepted. People who don't like a film don't like a film, people who presume upon the genuineness of people who liked a film and imagine intentions for their liking the film are the real pretentious ones.

I worked in a theater back when Alien3 came out some old guy asked for a refund because he 'didn't know what kind of movie it was'. Admittedly not the best Alien movie but the title was 'Alien' '3' I wanted so bad to ask what the fuck kinda movie he thought it was when he bought a ticket.
When a theater messes up you get a refund, not because you didn't like the movie - grow up.

I love this!

They are fucking awesome for doing this. I wish the local AMC would do the same. To many idiots want money back after seeing a great film because they didn't understand it... Yet they'll go see a crap fest 5 times "because nothing else good is playing".

And hello again Schmoes! It's been awhile...

Do you remember when George Clooney said he would refund ANYONE asking him to do so after BATMAN & ROBIN... I wonder how many people did !?
Yeah, I know, it's irrelevant...

Go eat a fat one Ken...

I don't claim to be able to fully understand all of Malick's films. Yet, I do love them because they do have things that appeal to me.

I haven't seen Tree of Life yet, but it feels like you're attacking anyone that likes some of his movies.

For that, I say piss off.

Tree of Life was terrible. It's an "Emperor's New Clothes" kind of movie where film snobs pretend they understand and like it, but deep down they don't know what the fuck they just saw. I walked out after about 50 minutes, and at least fifteen other people walked out before I did. If 25% of the audience are walking out, then the movie is bad...pure and simple.

Ah. So if YOU don't understand it, no one else could possibly understand it either? I can tell you are extremely arrogant, considering you made this judgement after only seeing a third of the film.

Good for them

Generally, I believe refunds are only in order if the film equipment breaks or some related occurrence, not when the customer doesn't like the movie. Generally, I'm in favor of consumer protections (re ripoffs, unsafe products, etc) but not in instances like this. If people didn't know what the film was about before they chose to see it, that's their problem.

I've never even heard of anyone askig for a refund because they didn't like a movie. Maybe I've lived a sheltered life. Perhaps the people requesting refunds would rather go see some quality summer fare like Jumping the Broom?

Haha. I haven't seen it but this is good. I don't think theaters should ever refund a movie because people don't like it. I mean it isn't the theater who made the movie. I understand refunds for other reasons, but I find it absurd anyone would want a refund because they didn't like the movie.

It was 2 hours of pretentious.

But there were some really pretty shots of Jellyfish and Spacey-things. Let me emphasize it was REALLY PRETTY, like I could easily say it was the best shot movie I've seen all year.
...Plus the mom was pretty hot.
But as for story...meh, 1950s parents sucked, life is hard, children are cruel. Credits.

Yes, yes - if you don't like Terrence Malick, it automatically means you only like Michael Bay.
Malick fans are far more pretentious than Malick films - they show very little of the understanding of human nature their idol displays.

Buyer Beware

Getting a refund for a movie is stupid. If I went to a hockey game and my team got shut out that night and played like crap, I wouldn't expect a refund. I understand I'm taking a risk with my purchase. The only time I ever asked for a refund was because the theater we were in had an audio problem where me and my friends couldn't understand or hear the dialogue effectively because they had the surround sound speakers blasting the effects noise and music too loud (the movie was Hidalgo).

Ha ha. I went to see Tree of Life yesterday and someone who worked at the movie theater was talking about this with someone and mentioned he's had to refund a number of people's money for it, about 15 minutes into it. Which is of course I soon found out when all the space stuff started.

I don't really see an excuse in not reading up on a movie before seeing it. Especially in this day and age.

I would never ask for a refund for a piece of shit movie. At the same time though Im not always in the mood to try and figure out what the fuck is going with what Im watching. This movie is obviously not for everyone and the people who dont care for this style of film it doesnt make them an idiot for doing so. Personally Ill wait for dvd to make up my own mind on the subject.

This issue is retarded

Why the hell would someone ask for a refund on a movie? People go to movies all the time and walk out disappointed. Hell, some movies are so boring I fall asleep- do I ask for a refund? no. Part of the joy of movies is discovery- even if you discover that a movie sucks. Anybody who goes into a Terrence Malick film and is surprised by its esoteric and philosophical nature is an idiot who above everybody else, most definitely does not deserve a refund.

So cool...

How anyone could walk out of that film and not be affected on some level, or, at the very least, not contemplate the big questions presented, need to go watch GREEN LANTERN again with their thumbs up their asses.

Challenging, thought-provoking cinema is a dying art form (in this country at least) and it should be celebrated. Not lambasted. C'mon, people, don't make me give up on humanity just yet...

If you don't like a film a half hour in

Then I think you have every right to get a refund on it. It may be my bias since my theater abides by the policy of getting a refund like halfway through, though. If they finish the whole movie and want a refund (like some dumb bitch wanted for Black Swan), then I understand not giving a refund. You got what you paid for.

I have to disagree. Why should a theater be responsible for giving a refund if a customer doesn't like a movie? That doesn' make sense to me. If the movie is disappointing, then what does that have to do with the theater showing it? It's not a theater's fault if someone doesn't like a film. I can see how refunds would be warranted if the the theater service, food, cleanliness, etc was bad. But the actual movie? Customers should go to the distributor or filmmakers if they want their money

Who goes to art house cinemas and then complains that a movie is slow? That's like going to a nursing home and complaining about all the old people.

It would be like going to a restaurant ordering something you never tried and asking for a refund because you don't like it. If the food is burnt or dry or dirty or whatever, that might work, but not if you simply didnt enjoy it. Same here. No technical problems with the movie theater, you just don't like a film, no fucking refund.

I think people like you are what's wrong with America right now. Your the type of person who only went to this movie because you saw Brad Pitt in the trailer. Your the type of person who would buy poison and drink it if the skull and cross bones was replaced with the smiling face of Will Smith. Instead of complaining, do some damn research before you see a movie.
