More preposterous period action in the latest trailer for The Three Musketeers

Jun. 28, 2011by: Dave Davis

You might have thought that no one could possibly bring Alexandre Dumas' literary classic THE THREE MUSKETEERS to life quite like Douglas Fairbanks, Gene Kelly, Michael York or, um, Chuck Sheen.

But that was before RESIDENT EVIL filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson applied some gloriously absurd slo-mo swordplay, gunplay, cannonplay and flamethrowerplay to the tale. Not to mention some indescribably hilarious hair and hammy acting. Bear witness!

The synopsis: The hot-headed young DArtagnan (Logan Lerman) joins forces with three rogue Musketeers (Matthew MacFadyen, Luke Evans and Ray Stevenson) in this reboot of Alexandre Dumas' story. They must stop the evil Richlieu (Christoph Waltz) and face off with Buckingham (Orlando Bloom) and the treacherous Milady (Milla Jovovich). The action adventure is given a state of the art update in 3-D.

The flick opens October 14.

Extra Tidbit: This is definitely giving the distinct odor of a future AWFULLY GOOD column...

Have to admit that the trailer is fun to re-watch. He does have some spectacular scenes and some great actors in there. Looking forward to seeing a lot more of One-eyed Mikkelsen.

Not sure why there is so much hate for this. People are turned off by the airships? Why? I think the airships at a cool action element to the film. Not saying this will be good, but it looks like fun. Looks like the same kind of turn-off-your-brain action film as so many others.

I'll wait to see this trailer in 3D, because the intricate way W.S. Anderson uses the format pretty much invalidates the work's 2D version. That's how it is with Afterlife and that's how it appeared to be from the last trailer. Anyway... this is probably my most-anticipated of the year, beating out even The Tree of Life. Can't wait for more W.S. Anderson awesomenosity. The guy's the modern master of action spectacle... such a pity he just gets flamed on all the time. "Oh, no, it's not

"Oh, no, it's not beat-for-beat like the book, it must be so terrible." At the *very* least I'm excited for some swashbuckling... we get it so rarely anymore... and if this is even half as good as the Gene Kelly Musketeers movie I'll be happy.

I had no idea Dumas was such a fan of steampunk.

Who do they think is gonna pay to see this?

Looks like an expensive piece of crap.
Seems they're trying to capture the fun, adventurous personality of Pirates of the Caribbean, except it seems too dark and drab to attract the same audience. Seems like a misfire.
Speaking of misfires, shouldn't "Musketeers" use muskets?
Didn't see a single one of them even holding one.

Muskets - you get one shot off, and then you either stand around waiting to get killed while you reload, or you pull out your sword. Maybe instead of heavy-artillery dirigibles, he should have incorporated automatic fire muskets.

I think this looks like a fun little adventure flick. Nothing really standout terrible from the trailer. One major negative would be that its in 3D.

Ray Stevenson aside...

This looks like utter shit. "Buckingham rules the sky."(?!) What the hell is that? At least this version has a Duke of Buckingham, but still.

Can't a movie be fun, lack inhibitions, but also be good? Can't people want both? Or if its action, are you suggesting we have to lower our expectations?

ah. . . spit

This looks underwhelming. I got a whole Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow vibe from it. But I will see it because in Jovovich I trust. I will watch anything with her in it. Leeloo multipass!

Ray Stevenson looks cool and substantial but the rest...looks kind of fun but flimsy.

Airships are cool, but in 3 Muskateers?

Looks like Anderson is trying to capitalize on the growing interest in Steampunk, but that doesn't mix well with the Muskateers I'm afraid.

And why is Bloom's character sporting a pompadour?

Steampunk elements are now in a major motion picture. They wouldn't have been even just 1 year ago. Interst in Steampunk is growing, it's becoming more prevalent on the web, and conventions are beginning to become commonplace.

Capiche?
