Fat Albert is phat

03.10.2004

Bill Cosby's Emmy nominated cartoon about urban youth growing up on the streets of Philadelphia has finally found their fat guy. Kenan Thompson will pack on the pounds to play the lead character in 20th Century Fox's FAT ALBERT. Thompson was recently seen in BARBERSHOP 2: BACK IN BUSINESS and makes weekly appearances on Saturday Night Live. If you want to really get mad at him, go rent GOOD BURGER. He joins Omarion as Reggie, Jermaine Williams as Mush Mouth, and Aaron Frazier as Weird Harold. The film will mix live action with the characters familiar animation as the group of kids walk out of the cartoon into the real world. The original series was based on the stand-up comedy act of Cosby in the early 70's. Known as Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids until 1979, the show changed it's name to The New Fat Albert Show and continued to air until 1984. Cosby handled most of the voices himself including the show's very own super hero, The Brown Hornet. The theme of each show was always about pounding home positive social values to a young audience and the importance of responsible decisions while living on the mean streets of Philly. The project looks to start filming in April with director Joel Zwick at the helm.

A couple years ago it was Forest Whitaker who sat in the director's chair with Omar Benson Miller set to star as Fatty. There were rumors of huge creative differences with Cosby and the project has been waiting in limbo ever since. When Whitaker left, the plot was centered around the attempts of Albert and his gang of walking speech impediments coming to the real world to help a shy little girl fit in at her new school. Don't expect too much drama here folks.
