Game Over: American Psycho being rebooted

Dec. 8, 2011by: Paul Tassi

Alright, I'm done. I can't do this anymore. This is the last reboot I can write about before I officially jump off of something really high, or grab an axe like Patrick Bateman up there and go on a murder spree.

What's funny is that this image above is used on the internet as a meme to indicate when you want to kill something horrible or idiotic. Now we're getting really meta as the horrible and idiotic thing is a remake of AMERICAN PSYCHO itself.

I'm not joking, this is really happening. Despite being an amazing black comedy and psychological thriller, Lionsgate will not leave well enough alone and are making their own adaptation of the 1991 book by Bret Easton Ellis.

Noble Jones is set to write and direct, a man who is an alleged protégé of David Fincher. No way to make your feature film debut than by making a movie that absolutely no one believes should exist.

Now, where's my axe?

Extra Tidbit: AMERICAN PSYCHO 2 is the biggest shift in tone and quality I've EVER seen in a movie series. Mila Kunis seducing and killing Wliliam Shatner is all you need to know.

Hollywood's bound to destroy classics. I can't even fathom a remake to 'American Psycho'.
BUT...
If they stick to the original novel by Ellis, this MIGHT work.
The original is a classic and Bale should have garnered some trophies for his work, but hey...I'm an optimist. This might work.

OMG! THE DIRECTOR OF A TAYLOR SWIFT VIDEO MUST BE TOTALLY INCOMPETENT!

Bah. Guess what dude. Francis Lawrence directed Britney Spears in two very good music videos, and he also directed 'I Am Legend' and 'Constantine'.
They're not perfect films, but they're a good example of a music video director making a respectable jump from music videos to cinema. Stop jumping to conclusions.

If Francis Lawrence, who did not understand the point of I Am Legend, is the best you can come up with, this film is well and truly screwed.

Hollywood will never learn. There's just no way to follow-up Bale's iconic performance. Just cannot happen. By the way, if you haven't read the book, read that shit. The violence is pretty shocking.

Hollywood has to bank in on the Occupy movement before it fades and what better way than an "Updated" version of American Psycho. Smells like shit. Great ode to Occupy Hollywood is doin by remaking a movie and literature and fucking it up for film fans

Damn, was the original released back in 1865 that they have to remake it?

Note: That date wasn't a typo.

(As for that tidbit, I may have to see it...just for that scene. However, I still need to see the first one).

There are no more barriers to cross. All I have in common with the uncontrollable and the insane, the vicious and the evil, all the mayhem I have caused and my utter indifference toward it I have now surpassed. My pain is constant and sharp, and I do not hope for a better world for anyone. In fact, I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape. But even after admitting this, there is no catharsis; my punishment continues to elude me, and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself.

like Skellington says, it's another adaptation not a reboot. There are tons of movies based on Shakespears work, but those are all adaptations, not reboots. Robin Hood has been adapted in films every decade in the last 110 years, but oh noes we get another American Psycho adaptation after 12 years. Suck to be us.

There is a difference between remaking a classic story and remaking a movie that hasn't been around for fifteen years (or adapting the same book twice that hasn't been around for twenty-five years even. And if it was a notoriously bad example, that's one thing, but people pretty much either love American Psycho or it's not their cup of tea.

Herald, just shut up. Your comparing American Psycho to CLASSIC literature. American Psycho is something that shouldn't be remade.

I am willing to tolerate remakes for movies 30+ years old, but for a 2000 movie that doesn't feel dated at all, it's too much.

I was reading in the huffington post about why there are so many remakes and sequels being made and how it is bad for the american audience. Hollywood is sticking to what makes them money. If a movie was successfull 20 years ago, they are going to remake it or make a sequel out of it rather than make a movie based on an original idea. they only want movies that will make them money. this can be blamed for every person that didnt go see cowboys and aliens this last summer and went and saw

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Totally unnecessary. The original is one of my all time favorite movies. Why fuck with a great movie? Plus it's only 11 years old. I normally don't get bent out of shape over remakes or "new adaptations" but this seems ridiculous to me.

Basically it's not a remake, but a new adaptation, but ...

The Mary Harron version is more than fine. Plus this film is too young. I understand rebooting movies that could have been potential franchise but failed. Let's forget American Psycho 2, they only took that title to sell more. American Psycho is a stand alone movie, not a potential franchise, therefor this new version makes no sense.

The only way I can see this working, is if Noble Jones takes a different approach on the Brett Easton Ellis's book and makes something completely different from

What's the Point?

I don't care about the artistic argument when it comes to this film/these films. The problem I have is, the original wasn't successful. It's a "cult classic" because those people didn't go see it in the theatre -- most people discovered it at home. That doesn't translate to box-office gross. Name any cult-classic, think about rebooting it, will it make money? I would argue very few will.

I'm not against reboots or remakes if they need to correct a bad take on a film or bring an old film into the modern age, but reboots like this are just bone stupid.

I'm just waiting for the announcement of the Pulp Fiction reboot and then I'm grabbing an axe, a gun, 2 midgets and a tub of Vaseline.

More Important Things Than Remaking American Psycho...

Well, we have to end apartheid for one. And slow down the nuclear arms race, stop terrorism and world hunger. We have to provide food and shelter for the homeless, and oppose racial discrimination and promote civil rights, while also promoting equal rights for women. We have to encourage a return to traditional moral values. Most importantly, we have to promote general social concern and less materialism in young people.

For F**k Sakes

Ive said this in many posts, regarding any movie that shouldn't be made (reboots, sequels) for the sole purpose of generating more income. Hollywood is ignorant, lazy, & viewers refuse too punish their ignorance. Watch hangover 2,3, Spiderman, Conan, and many more to follow, then complain on blogs &, sites. Out of principle people should boycott it in theatres. Wait for blurry for f**k sakes.

Try getting a reservation at Dorsia now

While I'm sure the book could be more faithfully adapted, I think it will lose the dark humour that the book also housed. Especially if the director is a protege of Fincher's.

The remake's biggest loss will be Christian Bale. No one will ever top his madcap performance as Bateman. NO ONE.

Meh

I know I'm going to get thumbed down for this but I don't get the love for this movie. I thought Bale's performance in THE MACHINIST was far superior and it's practically the same movie. Him acting weird the whole movie and the viewer not knowing what's real or in his head.

Maybe I can write an Unpopular Opinion..... eh maybe not.

Eh they really aren't that similar, In American Psycho you are aware that this guy is crazy, in The Machinist you are led to believe that bad things might be happening to him with little hints dropped in that he might not be all the way there or that his insomnia causes problems. Plus the characters are just completely different.

NO no no no no no, I'm right there with you on this one Tassi, there is no way this should be happening. The general rule for a remake should be is there anyway possible for us to make a better version of this movie than the original. If the answer is no and it probably should be most of the time then it shouldn't be made... but it's all about the money. This movie will be about a tenth as good as the original at best.

Really? I can understand some remakes but this? There is absolutely no reason for this film, especially - as said above - as a first feature. A well-respected director possibly but still a stupid idea.

This is straight stupid, you dont need to remake great films, remake films that had potential to be great and build upon that from what was missing in it.

The only way, and this is the only way it can work if you get Christian Bale back, because I read awhile back that this is his favorite character to have play, or Tom Cruise
