Look at the choices here, then take a second to think of the basic synopsis of each one. This specific type of horror film is SO OVERDONE. It basically has taken over slasher movies, in my opinion.

OF COURSE BUT...

Exorcist is THE obvious choice.
BUT Prince Of Darkness is, to my opinion, one of "modern" Carpenter's BEST and highly underrated.

And speaking of splitting hairs...

The Omen isn't demonic possession, it's Satan's son in flesh and blood.

Not to split fine hairs, but I don't think Burnt Offerings counts as a demonic possession movie...does it? It's been a while, but I thought it was a ghost/evil spirit story.

Definitely good question. I think she was possessed by the ghost of the old lady, not a demon.

I loved the Exorcist but I think that The Exorcism of Emily Rose is incredibly underrated so I can't decide between the two

The first movie I thought of when I read the link to this article was The Exorcist, and big surprise, it's #1. I voted for Fallen.

I voted for Emily Rose, creepy as fuck that one. Lets the minuses roll but Ive never been a fan of The Exorcist, I never saw it till I was in my 20's and found it more cheesy than scary. Probably the effects did me in the most which are shitty to today's standards.

apparantly they are shitty because they used Practical effects instead of CGI? the special directors cut includes the "brain scan" scene which without even really trying to be "scary" it shows how barbaric medical practices were back in the late 70's WOW simply wow, did doctors really do that to patents just for brain scans? ouch.

The Exorcist is one of the greats of all time. Its always been in my top ten. Its hard to compete with something this good.

Hahaha, Stigmata, I forgot about that turd....The Exorcist will always be ahead of the game and any movie dealing with exorcism for live in its shadow. Just like you'll never be able to make a movie with sharks without comparing it to Jaws.

I gave The Omen my vote, mostly because I expected everyone to vote for The Exorcist and I felt like Gregory Peck needed a little love.

The fact that this isn't even close to being a legitimate discussion is almost depressing. What's the deal? DId The Exorcist simply create such a vivid, thorough depiction so there is no room for further quality storytelling?

Only One Answer

I love The Evil Dead but too slapstick, The Omen is great but the boy IS the antichrist, not possessed. I loved The Entity, but it is more of a haunting than anything else. I really liked (REC 2) in the more recent times but in this instance you can not top the original. Not only does The Exorcist still hold up well by today's standards but it was released the day after Christmas 1973. People fainted, vomited and ran out of theatres. Not only that, church attendances spiked; tough for any movie

You have your movies mixed up a little. The slapstick didn't happen until Evil Dead 2.

Exorcist it is...

Night of the Demons is strangely missing while THE FALLEN get's ranked? PUH-LEAAZE ... good movies all bu Exorcist raised the bar to an unimaginable level and nobody has even gotten anywhere near the level of depravity that movie had.

No movie will ever top The Exorcist! Not to say some others on the list are not worthy. Also I do not consider Stigmata a demonic possession film.

As much as I watch and love both Evil Dead films, as well as the Omen (heck, I enjoyed The Omen 2 even more!) I just wouldn't feel genuine voting for anything other than The Exorcist. Raimi's Dead trilogy wasn't nearly as possession-oriented, and despite its shocking premise The Entity was not nearly as effective. It's a great genre, but The Exorcist truly is its crowning achievement.

Evil Dead

The Evil Dead is one of my fave horror films and I really prefer the first one to the second. I think it is a good deal better.

Why isn't The Devil Inside on the list!? The ending of that movie was sooooo scary, I highly recommend it!

Exorcist

Nothing beats the Exorcist. I'm too young, but I can only imagine the horror on peoples faces when they first saw this in the theater. People were probably not expecting so demonic.
