New TV spot for John Carter just sold me a ticket

Jan. 26, 2012by: Paul Shirey

JOHN CARTER has been "kind of" on the radar, but seems to be getting shoved off due to the heavy anticipation for the two behemoth movies coming out this summer (THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and THE AVENGERS obviously) and it's kind of a shame, because it looks really good.

What peaked my interest early on was Andrew Stanton directing, yet another Pixar alum taking on live action for the first time. If Brad Bird's success on MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL was any indication of the animator-to-live-action vision then I think that JOHN CARTER is likely to kick many forms of alien ass.

Check out the new TV spot below:

Now, that's what I'm talkin' about! Who says you have to wait til summer for a good, big budget romp? I love the use of the symphonic Led Zeppelin song "Kashmir" throughout the marketing and would give mad props if they actually used it in the film. It's doubtful they will, but a Michael Giacchino score isn't too shabby either.

Speaking of which, if you head over to the official site, you can hear a sampling of his score, which sounds perfectly in line with what you'd expect. And that's a good thing.

JOHN CARTER jumps through the air, throws chains, and more than likely bags the tattooed babe on March 9, 2012.

Extra Tidbit: Andrew Stanton directed Wall*E, A Bug's Life, and Finding Nemo, as well as co-writing the Toy Story and Monster's Inc. films. I'd say he deserves a day in court for his first live-action flick.

I want it to be successful as well, but mark my words...

THIS WILL BE DISNEY'S 10,000 B.C.

EXCEPT...I think the movie will actually be good, but in the end, hardly anyone will be seeing it. Only one big name attached (Dafoe, and just his voice no less), a director that non-animated film goers don't know, etc...but like I said, I want it to be successful.

Just my 2 cents.

I have to admit, I've been defending the shit out of this movie as a fan of Andrew Stanton, but I've gotta be honest, I've been a little underwhelmed with what I've seen. I don't think the commercials do a great job of really selling the story, so it all seems a bit "OK um WTF am I watching now?". I've had to try to explain what this movie's about to people on 2 or 3 occasions now, and I'm still not even sure I'm right. And I'm honestly not totally sold on Kitsch. BUT I'm still holding out hope

Even though its awful marketing campaign, I love the optimism of people regarding this movie. Because of that, I might check it out, but damn.. every time I watch a trailer it gives me a terrible Attack of the Clones headache

I like the cut of your jib Mr. Shirey, I don't know how long you've been a Schmoe but between this and that Expendables 2 post you got a fan in me. I actually read the book Princess of Mars that this was based on, my only complaint is that "the tattooed babe" needs to be way more scantly clad, oh and I saw the trailer for this in 3D and its conversion looks horendous, I guess I'll be seeing John Carter in the second dimension.

I usually skip the 3D myself. If she WERE more scantily clad, then definite 3D.
I have not read the books, but their reputation is pretty solid. Maybe when I'm done reading "The Help" and "A Shore Thing" by Snooki I'll get to it.
Thanks for the props. I'll be here til I get fired.

Always been interested in this film

simply because it's Andrew Stanton behind the camera. The guy who created Finding Nemo and WALL-E is not going to screw this up.

And for those complaining it's derivative, that's because nearly every freaking adventure story written or filmed in the last century has been influenced by this title. It's like seeing Rear Window after watching Disturbia.

That's a terrible comparison simply because Rear Window is filmed entirely from the perspective of the apartment. Here's a thought though, what if some of those adventure stories committed to film did it better? I'm not trying to knock a movie I haven't seen yet, but just because the story is a century old doesn't mean the script and/or visuals aren't borrowing from other, more familiar examples.

Well, It looks better than anything else I have seen for this film. However, I still don't think I will rush out to see it. I will let some more of you enthusiastic people see it first and then see what you say...

I think there has been some confusion by some parties, with some people complaining it IS derivative, and others mostly bemoaning the huge return Disney is unlikely to make on their investment. Either way, I don't care. It's Andrew Fuckin' Stanton. I think it will be nothing short of miraculous for this movie to make as much as it needs to, but on a personal note, I don't give a shit. I want to show the love.

Well...

...I'm going to see this, but I feel like the advertisements need a little more backstory as to what the fuck is going on. Maybe emphasize on his life while on Earth and show him ending up on Mars a little more.

Right now it just looks cool and doesn't make any sense to people who don't know the story.

Also, @kreizler, I think the blue paint is actually blood from that big mamma-jamma he's fighting.

I think it's gotten a bad rap for absolutely no reason. As long as it's as good as it looks to be, I'm hoping that it is a success. If not, it could end up in the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World category, which is: awesome movie = awful box office. It sucks when great movies bomb, because there's always a Chipmunks movie that makes a kajillion bucks, meaning we'll see more of those and less of the good stuff.

When will people give up that shitty comparison with Dances with Wolves. It's getting old and is totally irrelevant. The Fighter was Raging Bull 2, yet I don't hear anyone complain about it.

You see in the full trailer that what he's covered in from head to toe is the blue blood of the creature he just defeated in the arena. I think him being drenched in red blood would be a little too extreme for a Disney flick.
