Zack Snyder wants Man of Steel to be "edgy"

Apr. 11, 2012by: Alejandro Stepenberg

Anticipation equally balanced by ambivalence currently surrounds Zack Snyder's upcoming MAN OF STEEL like a mass of mall zombies, but until we see more than a single official image from the thing all we can do is sit on our asses, twiddle our thumbs, and wonder just how exactly to interpret details like that which Dylan Sprayberry (who plays a young Clark Kent) revealed in an interview with ClevverTV:

"When Zack [Snyder] and I were talking about it the first time, he was saying how Superman, they want to give it a more edgy feel like 'The Dark Knight' but also make it more realistic and emotional so it’s not just the all-american superhero that saves everyone. He has dilemmas and love and struggles throughout the whole movie, especially when he's a kid."

With a comment like this it'd be so easy to poke fun at Snyder, but I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt because I think I see what he means by it.  He just doesn't want the clean-cut, easy morality that has been the artistic choice of certain Superman stories in the past.  Which makes sense, and I respect that.  Or do you think he means something different and/or doesn't even understand the character of Superman at all?

Dylan Sprayberry

But don't just take Snyder's word for it - you can decide for yourself if this was the right path for Superman when you catch MAN OF STEEL on June 14th, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Many last names have some meaning from way back when - "Freeman," "Goldman," "Smith," "Baker," and so on. Which makes me wonder what the origins of "Sprayberry" might be.

Whats with all the Snyder hate, I mean Dawn of the Dead was a great remake & 300 was cool, its just the usual fanboy hate cause of how he handled watchmen, which wasn't even that bad. I also enjoyed sucker punch for what it was & the soundtrack was great. I did not care for Superman Returns & lets face it we have not had a decent Superman movie since part 2 & that was almost 30 years ago. I'll wait for a teaser until i make any calls on this movie.

HMM I will say this...

Anyone notice the length of time there giving post production on the film?? Damn its like post production for lord of the rings or something... well I think WB is so scared there gonna fuck it up again that they are taking every precaution. But if they dont have the story, character development, or initially filming right, post prod. wont matter. but if they do get all that right then pacing will be my only concern after that. I pray they pull it off.... I went back and watched the first

Not much to do with MOS but it was another one I was hoping theyd get right. I think theyll pull it off

Even though I think Goyer is a horrible writer, and Snyder only works if he has a good script to work off of, I agree with this. This is the kind of post-prodcution time that should be given to every special effects heavy movie.

Well Superman Returns seemed very rushed which to me was due to the rise in comic films at the time.

Batman Begins but with superpowers. No thanks. Though I'm sure the trailers are going to be awesome. Snyder is great at trailers. Even better than Bay.

I'm very excited for this film and am dieing to see ANY footage from this film.

I just hope we get a hand to hand combat scene with Superman vs anyone.

I won't take his word for it, but I loved Watchmen, and it was his best work. Sucker Punch made me a little nervous of what he is planning on doing with Superman. I hope it's not going to be a large music video. I really hope he captures the tough side of Superman. No more boy scout and Lex Luthor.

If what he meant is that Superman will finally throw punches. Then yea, I'm intrigued.

This is Snyder's way of saying "SUPERMAN IS A BOOOOOOOOORING CHARACTER!". And he is completely right! I never really cared much for Superman. He just never seemed to have any flaws or personal problems. He's just a very clean cut superhero which is kinda boring. Hell there is only one thing in the world that can kill him so that takes away most of the suspense right there. I actually feel this way about alot of DC characters (except of course the Dark Knight himself). They are just all so bland

Can't wait to see what Synder does here.

Superman is the polar opposite of Batman

That's why they've been such an amazing contrast since they first hit the scene in the 40s. Pre-Sprang era Batman and Supes were yin and yang, man. If they wanted edgey they could've dipped into the darker aspect of becoming a government watchdog like they did in Death in the Family (when the president ordered Superman to keep Batman in check)...or in Dark Knight Returns (pretty much the same plot). Superman For All Seasons had an amazing take on the people around Superman and how he effected

This sounds like Superman: Dark.

Sheit, if they REALLY wanted dark and edgey they shoulda gone Elseworlds and done the Red Sun commie Supes story...

Dark & Edgy goes with Superman like green peppers goes with a cherry pie.

What's the point of Superman if he's not super?

Let's hope this doesn't start a trend in Batmanizing all superheroes. It'd be nice if they each had their own identity.

So tired of film productions being ruled by teen angst.

If you're gonna go for "edgy" ...

...you don't tell people you want to be edgy. You just do it and let people decide for themselves. You don't give us cues on what you were going for. Are you new at this, Zack? Come on...

Superman is not Batman. He has his own merits. Snyder should play to them, and not try to knock the Dark Knight formula.

The tone and the world will be edgy to more reflect our own, not the character. Superman will be the direct contrast to that, he's the symbol of hope in a dark time. The movie will be about his journey to become that symbol much like Batman Begins. This is an origin story so he won't be "Superman" at the very beginning. To get from A to D you need to go through B and C, it's called a character arc. I trust the team behind this movie to deliver, because with Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and

The Darknight example

It's great to see a Superman movie coming soon. But why does every superheroe movie has to be like the Dark knight? I mean, this could be good, but I'm annoyed by the idea that, as The Dark knight made a lot of money, everybody is trying to copy its style as a formula for success in the box office. Don't get me wrong, in this case it could end up in something good. We'll have to see.

hmmmm

Reading the quote "they want to give it a more edgy feel like 'The Dark Knight" reminds me of the story when WB first tried to make Batman when they wanted it to be like Superman. I think Tom Mankiewicz told WB straight that you can't do that as they are totally different characters.
Looks like WB are going to mess up again because of the deadline of the rights as they had to be making a Superman film by a date and they have hired a director who is just doing what many filmmakers did when

Just proves the guy is a director you just hire, rather than someone to create something which is what one should do in my view in the directors chair.
I also would have thought after Suker Punch WB would have given him the boot...

I agree with your first part. Superman is not dark and edgy. On the other hand it's a good thing to try new things to avoid repetition, but in this case, for me it's just about the money that Dark Knight made so it's like they say "that works, let's do that" instead of looking for a new concept that FITS the style of superman. You can see their doing the same thing with almost every superheroe. That's why I liked Ironman, they found that that superheroe works with a bit of humour. Next thing:

Bad Tastes

The last superman movie left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths. I mean honestly it was one of the most boring superman movies out there. Hopefully with the inclusion of Zod, no son of Superman and a darker feel, it will be a bit more entertaining. I just hope they don't fall off the edge of being too much of a love story.

I like what I've seen of the costume and heard of the direction! The people behind this relaunch got what it takes, and I personally can't wait to see a more nuanced and modern take on Supes!

It's definitely sore after Superstalker Returns, but it also made me wary of any future 'Superman' projets that are trying to 'be edgy like The Dark Knight'.
