Weekend Box-Office: June 15-17, 2012

Jun. 17, 2012by: Dave Davis

Madagascar 3 is still the king of the jungle!

For its second weekend in theaters, MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE'S MOST WANTED faced a pair of high-profile challengers, but Ben Stiller's lion and his animal buddies were more than hungry enough to chomp the box office.

The Dreamworks CG flick placed #1 again, swallowing another $35.5 million and bringing its 10-day total to $120.4 million -- plus an additional $157M from overseas crowds. Probably safe to assume we'll see those digital beasts roam to a new destination for a fourth MADAGASCAR adventure.

Meanwhile in deep space, Ridley Scott's ALIEN-related thing PROMETHEUS landed again in second place, but at a 60% drop from last week with $20.2 million. There was a lot of excitment before it arrived, but it doesn't seem like word-of-mouth is going to give it much summer propulsion (it ranked #3 on last week's JoBlo.com poll of most disappointing movies so far this summer).

Still, PROMETHEUS is destined to travel past the $100M domestic mark, and has already gathered $128.6M more internationally. It's also now the highest-grossing movie in the entire ALIEN franchise (but only fifth if you adjust for inflation, in which case Scott's own first movie takes the top.)

As for the newcomers, ROCK OF AGES sang to half-empty stadiums with just $15 million despite A-lister Tom Cruise rocking the hair extensions and 80s nostalgia. Warner Bros. was obviously hoping to replicate the success of another popular Broadway musical brought to the big screen, 2008's MAMMA MIA!, which made $144M in the US and a stunning $609M worldwide total. But it's clearly not easy to sell 80s nostalgia to today's young moviegoing generation that was fortunate enough to be born after glam bands, parachute pants and Members Only jackets were fashionable.

Is Adam Sandler's audience finally abandoning him? His new R-rated offering THAT'S MY BOY only made $13 million for a fifth place opening -- that's barely half of what his last heinous-looking "comedy" JACK AND JILL opened to in November. No wonder he's currently working on a sequel to GROWN UPS, his biggest movie since BIG DADDY. Co-star Andy Samberg is probably already calling Lorne Michaels looking for his SNL job back...

On the rest of the chart, SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN were sandwiched between the new entries (it's nearing $250M worldwide), and MEN IN BLACK III and THE AVENGERS are still scraping up some millions, with the latter edging toward an inevitable $600M mark. Pretty much every movie that doesn't have Marvel superheroes is getting smacked around this summer, at least in North America (although some are making up for it by drawing big crowds in other parts of the world).

There's still plenty of interest in Wes Anderson's MOONRISE KINGDOM -- audiences are tracking it down on one of the mere 178 locations where it's playing, and again it's got the highest per-screen average in the Top 10. BATTLESHIP and THE DICTATOR dropped out of sight this week, while THE HUNGER GAMES hung in there long enough to finally cross the $400M mark domestically.

Next weekend brings the presidential action of ABRAHAM LINCOLN, VAMPIRE HUNTER, going against the redheaded fury of Pixar's BRAVE and Steve Carell's apocalyptic romcom SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD. Are you interested in seeing Pixar's BRAVE next weekend? VOTE HERE!

Prometheus doesn't deserve the criticism it has gotten really, it was still a good sci-fi movie, but connecting it to Alien was prolly its downfall, leave it to fanboys to turn on a movie so quickly.

After Prometheus though I knew the month of June looked very weak & no other movie has caught my interest at least until The Dark Knight Rises. I honestly believe the new Spider-Man will flop.

Spider-Man won't flop. Whether its a great movie remains to be seen, but its gonna make a shit-ton of money over Fourth of July weekend.

I saw Rock of Ages and loved every minute of it. I was really excited to see it because I had seen the Broadway play for my birthday and was anticipating how the transistion from Broadway to big screen would look like. I thought the movie was great and was hoping that it did better at th box office, but it's understandable because only people who appreciate the 80's and it's music would really go see it (Two things I am a die hard fan of). I would gladly see it again (and plan too). It was a

I really, REALLY hope that Cruise gets an Oscar nom becaue he was phenomenal in the film as Stacee Jaxx. He stole the whole film from everyone else in the star studded cast and proves that NOT ONLY can he act BUT ALSO sing great as well.

Everyone should go see it. It's a great film. I will probably go see it again and also see Avengers and Prometheus again.

Some people do like to think... that it was a contrived story that never fully developed any of the ideas it presented. There's no excuse for sloppy storytelling, even if your visuals are amazing.

Increasingly confident that The Avengers will take down at least Titanic on the all-time list.

Not gonna happen Dude. Titanic added ANOTHER 60M this year, remember?

And even with that 60 million, Avengers is now only 72 million short of Titanic's lifetime total. The Hunger Games still made a million bucks this past weekend and its been out for three months.

To say nothing if that Joss Whedon director's cut gets a theatrical release.

It won't. Even if it makes $8 million again next weekend, it's going to take 9 $8 million weekends to beat it. It made about $5 million during the week last week. Each week the weekend and weekly grossing will go down. You use Hunger Games as an example as making a million over the weekend (it made $850,000) but if you look at it's gross over the past 3 weeks it has only rose about $3 million.

If they re-release it with a director's cut or something at the end of summer then yeah it will

Rock of Ages

80's rock is awesome, the reason it bombed was not because of that... but because they turned a bunch of classic 80's rock songs into American Idol cover style CRAP. It just sounds horrible. I feel real bad for Cruise, Giamatti and Baldwin, damn.

Seems like PROMETHEUS is going to end up at best with 130-140M domestically, unlike the 200-250M everyone was expecting at the beginning of the summer. Which is unfortunate, because regardless of whether this film's meeting the expectations or not, I'm a big Ridley Scott fan and hoped this one would finally be a smash hit like his GLADIATOR so long ago. Though I liked most of his works inbetween (BLACK HAWK DOWN, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, MATCHSTICK MAN, AMERICAN GANGSTER, BODY OF LIES), it looks like

Though I liked most of his works inbetween (BLACK HAWK DOWN, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, MATCHSTICK MAN, AMERICAN GANGSTER, BODY OF LIES), it looks like none of his really ambitious projects (KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, ROBIN HOOD, BODY OF LIES) met the expectations of people, and now PROMETHEUS is inevitably going to end up on this list. I just wished a prequel to the frekking Alien would break this growing trend by becoming a blockbuster worthy of Scott's (as well as ALIEN's) legacy. Because lets face it, even at its worst, PROMETHEUS is still miles ahead of a MADAGASCAR or ROCK OF AGES or a MIB movie....This is a high-concept intelligent TRUE science fiction film which is a rare breed nowadays. Oh well, hope the sequel will work out for better.

I saw That's My Boy and Rock of Ages a while ago and thought they were both really good. That's My Boy is a super hilarious movie from the dudes that made Sex Drive (An underrated comedy) and Rock of Ages was a really good movie with great music (but I do agree, you need to love 80's rock to enjoy this movie)!
