Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov says the sequel will be shocking

Jun. 18, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Director Timur Bekmambetov has been doing the press rounds for his upcoming ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER and disclosed some details on his upcoming slate, including a sequel to WANTED, an historical tale, entitled THE CURRENT WAR, and a long-gestating adaptation of Herman Mellville's MOBY DICK.

It seems the sequel to WANTED was having some major issues in the development process until Bekmambetov cracked the code.

"An unbelievable thing happened three weeks ago," Bekmambetov said. "Because we stopped, we didn't know what to do for three or four years. Three weeks ago I came up with a great idea and I pitched this idea and everybody fell in love with it. And now I think we're on track. Right now the writer is working on the script, and it will be shocking."

"It's a continuation of the story, with Wesley Gibson," he confirms. "Other people are dead, you know, we can't bring them back. The story is the same character, same mythology, but it's got a great twist."

I'm wondering if his statement that "other people are dead" and "we can't bring them back" is meant to quash the rumors of them resurrecting Angelina Jolie's character somehow for the sequel, but Bekmambetov wasn't so specific.  I though WANTED was pretty kick ass and loved his stylish take on the comic, even if it deviated greatly from the source material.

It's unclear what Bekmambetov will put before the lens first, but he's definitely got a full plate of projects to devour.  Which would you like to see come to fruition first?

Bekmambetov's ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER opens this Friday, June 22, 2012.

Extra Tidbit: Even if she can't come back for a Wanted sequel, I'd love to see Angelina Jolie in more action roles. Salt was damn entertaining and I think she's primed for more material along those lines. What say you?

Wanted would have been great if not for the idiotic premise. (magic loom? uhhh, ok.)

Tidbit: Nope.

Sorry Paul, I maybe alone in this but I'm getting really tired of her (and many other fashion model looking action heroines) of these supposed "badass" roles of kicking the shit out of guys double/triple her size, specially when she's getting dangerously THINNER in last 10 years, its looking more and more ridiculous. Now, if she knew martial arts and use those lightning fast moves like the similiarly thin Michelle Yeoh or Zhang Zhiyi, it wouldn't be a problem and even looked much cooler. But

But she can kick or punch THAT much hard or even can casually juggle all those really bigass guns just because she "can", really don't do anything for me. Don't get me wrong I like Jolie, and if she'd retain her figure from those Tomb Raider movies it'd be much more appropriate. But, right now, not so much. I'd much rather have her dramatic roles she's so good at.

Anyway, I liked WANTED and will eagerly wait for the sequel. WANTED & a similiar type fun film SHOOT' EM UP are to me, like a really cool subgenre of action movies with over the top actions & CRAZY frenetic energy which makes for a pure blissful timepass at the movies.

I loved Wanted for how kinetic, frenetic and over-the-top it was. It was shot really well, looked great and was so crazy you couldn't help but get swept up in it. Thing is, when directors aim to "up the ante" for a sequel by deliberately making it "shocking", it doesn't always end well. Artificial attempts to ramp up the shock value never work as well as doing a sequel that continues the story but adds something different, and maybe that something different will be shocking by accident.

I'd be on board

I was quite fond of WANTED. I even thought it was better than the source material.
I still laugh thinking about when McAvoy lost his American accent hardcore and says "Fookin' pear-sistant, esn't he?"

Spoilers I suppose...

Just watched the original again and liked it quite a bit more than I remembered. Honestly, I'm glad Jolie and Freeman probably won't be back. They both just fell into their total typecast roles. It would be great for the sequel to feature some more interesting, lesser known actors.

I didn't intend to see Wanted, because most of my friends told me it wasn't good. I saw it anyway, and that was the day I learned most of my friends are assholes.

It can't be any more shocking than the original was.

alternative universe/time travel/first movie was a dream

i think they're gonna push something like that on us as the "shocking twist". that way they can keep the same characters and mythology and still bring back angelina and morgan freeman.

Not sure about a sequel. It stood alone and it is fine. It was okay to begin with anyway.

Sure, a wanted sequel would be cool. But where's the final "Watch" movie dang it.

iīm all for a sequel, i loved Wanted, in fact, itīs one movie i often revisit...
and itīs just a pitty angelina canīt come back to it.
but regarding the tidbit, yes, i agree with you, angelina just works in action flicks!

I enjoyed the entirety of Wanted (with the ultimate conclusion that his life as a superpowered assassin was just as trivial and meaningless as his life as a pathetic office drone) and as such I think its difficult to manage a sequel.

I know I'll get thumbed down for this but I'm entitled to my own opinion but I loved Wanted. My fav scene was in the beginning when McAvoy chucked the hissy fit and picked up the keyboard and belted his mate and knocked his teeth out and some of the computer keys went flying and spelt FUCK YOU. That shit was crazy funny. I welcome a sequel.
