Props

On the inclusion of John Adams. If you wanna know what American foundation was like, watch that series. Almost 0 action, but riveting, nonetheless.

Would have to go with Rambo II

If for no other reason than when Trautman says to Rambo not to hate his Country and Rambo replies,
"Hate? I'd die for it"

I admire your patriotism in the US; here in England if you're overly patriotic you are deemed a hooligan or a racist (thanks for that BNP).

Anyway, I would have to go with any James Bond movie - kicking arse in her majesty's service. "For Queen and country James?"

If for the sole reason that this poll is about patriotism (not just towards America), and thats why 300 is on the list...
Then for me, theres no stronger film that makes you want to fight for freedom, then Braveheart!

Anyone else remember The Final Countdown (no, not the hair-band song from the 1980's)? A modern American super-carrier is thrown back in time to the day before Pearl Harbor. Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen... and F-14s shooting down Japanese Zeros!

How can you possibly include the HBO mini-series about John Adams on this list and omit Band of Brothers?

I'm not American, but somehow Air Force One got me really pumped up, and is one of my very favourite movies and one that I never tire of watching. The idea of a heroic, gung-ho president who won't take any nonsense is very appealing, and of course, President Han Solo!

What?!

No "Yankee Doodle Dandy" w/James Cagney. It's a must see at my house on Independence Day.

They also omitted The Longest Day, Midway and PT109. Nobody writing for this site has seen a movie that was made before 1977.

I guess I could've listed every war movie ever made? Come on, now. The fun of these lists is in having to choose out of a select amount of choices. You can't list every movie ever made for every single poll. That's just asinine. Plus, you are always given the option to "write-in" your candidate. Democracy at work, kemosabe.

Hey Paul, we're not talking "every war picture" here...we're talking "Yankee Doodle Dandy", you know, the patriotic song during the American Revolution "Yankee Doodle". You know, the biographical story of the life of singer, writer, dancer, producer, actor, etc. George M. Cohan? Immigrant kid who did good and dominated the Broadway stage in the early days of the 20th Century?

I mean really, it's not a war movie.

Look, I know that you are probably spent from your work on this topic,

Otis, I think Paul's comment was directed towards me. To which I would reply that I was not suggesting that every war picture ever made be listed. I listed three movies that are widely recognized to be iconic films, depicting actual moments of triumph and heroism in our nation's history; and I found it strange that on a list of patriotic movies a film journalist would omit these in favor of films like Rocky, National Treasure and Gangs of New York; none of which have any patriotic elements at

Every 4th when fireworks starts going off I just want to drape myself in an American flag and yell at the top of my lungs "This is a night for America!". Gangs of New York gets my vote.

I had to go old school with it and pick Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Not only my favorite patriotic film but one of my top 10 films of all time. No contest.

Couldn't not pick Mr. Smith Goes To Washington

As goofily bad as it is, I'd probably go with Armaggedon as a close second, that movie makes you want to vote and go work on an oil rig or be an astronaut (or both).
LOL remember when we had a space program? - Good times.

Armageddon is the movie that makes you nostalgic for the space program, not The Right Stuff or Apollo 13? The soundtracks alone from those movies made me want to be an astronaut!
