Marvel's Phase Two movie details revealed at Comic Con (Now updated with title art!)

Jul. 14, 2012by: Alex Maidy

Yep, what you see there is a piece of production art for Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY which is now officially announced. Click to get a larger version of that awesome image!

Disney and Marvel unveiled the entire slate for Phase Two of their cinematic universe and we actually have some new details regarding the films and their titles. Looks like IRON MAN is the only franchise sticking with numerals.

IRON MAN 3 will be released on May 3, 2013 and Ben Kingsley was officially announced to be playing The Mandarin.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY will be hitting theaters on August 1, 2014. The team will consist of Groot, Drax, Rocket Racoon, Gamorra and Star Lord. Other members will be announced.

THOR 2 will now be known as THOR: THE DARK WORLD and will hit theaters November 8, 2013. Alan Taylor will direct the entire original cast. No word on who will be playing the villain now that Mads Mikkelsen has dropped out.

CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 is now CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and hits theaters on April 4, 2014. This will obviously be following the significant Winter Soldier character from the comics, but who knows how that will play with the events of THE FIRST AVENGER.

Edgar Wright's ANT-MAN test footage was shown but no official release was given. Maybe they are saving that for Phase Three. At least we now have official confirmation that ANT-MAN is coming!

Marvel certainly has their house in order. The level of organization needed to turn in multiple films that interconnect is one of the reasons it has taken this long for films like THE AVENGERS to hit theaters. I must commend Disney and Marvel for a job well done making fanboys everywhere happier than ever.

What do you think of Marvel's Phase Two?

Red Skull

I have this odd feeling that the Red Skull will be coming back in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Fuck you, Quesada. Fuck you, Brubaker. Fuck you, Marvel.

Captain America is one of my favorite characters in all of comics. The character deserves richly to have two great recent films after his 1990 and 1979 mediocre ones. I was looking forward to further Cap movies, and a true fan has still The Avengers 2 to anticipate. However, some of us might need to skip Captain America-2014. I hate the Winter Soldier charcter and storyline with a fucken passion. Others must as well. By resurrecting Bucky, Marvel exploited crassly a sacred cow. And, the company

And, the company and editorial department shat on the memory of Mark Gruenwald. They shat upon Roy Thomas's classic Avengers 56 story. As a writer, Mark created much of the Captain America that fans love today. As a head editor, Mark forbad anyone from ever returning the character, for Bucky's death was to mean something, which for years it did. Now once again, this movie commits the same money-grubbing, exploitive move that the comics did. I thought that Marvel Studios respected their fans (although, many younger fans eat up this Winter Soldier shit; they were not affected by the sidekick's death when young readers themselves; thus, Marvel is giving them what they want; one man's pabulum is another's poison).
I do appreciate the other planned projects though. Qute possibly, Phase 2 movies lead into The Avenges 2. Quite possibly, The Avenges 2 has Thanos and his mistress Death. Therefore, possibly, Thor's Darkworld refers to Asgardian Hel or some other death-realm. That's cool. Such a move introduces Thanos, maybe, and it might have Thor battle Hela, one of his nastiest adversaries. I can dig it. Guardians of the Galaxy has Drax and Gamora. They are Thanos foes. Therefore, their plot presence is a very good sign of a very good set-up to The Avengers 2. And, who knows? Maybe, Winter Soldier has Bucky resurrected for the film's main action only to have him die and go straight to fucken Hell (my wish for the Winter Soldier and Ed Brubaker) at the movie's end. A noted Avengers Annual had Bucky return once, but he was a phantom and returned to the ether by story's end.

If Marvel can do with the ridiculous "Guardians of the Galaxy" what they did with "Thor", I'll salute them. But I have my doubts. It's going to be especially tough if it fails, because I'm sure the media is itching for a superhero flop so they can point to it and ask obnoxious leading questions like, "Has the reign of Superhero movies finally come to an end?"

I only hope Marvel realizes that they are starting to get into characters the general population doesn't have any basic knowledge of. They need to plan their budgets accordingly; I don't want them to spend 200 million on Ant-Man then throw Edgar Wright under the bus if nobody but comic book fans show up to see it.

Anyone know why they haven't announced The Hulk movies? I thought Ruffalo signed on for a series?

Is Avengers 2 going to have the subtitle "Clusterf*ck"? Haha, kidding. But I am nervous that Marvel is going to throw too many characters into the next Avengers movie. Also, kinda disappointed there's no plan for a solo Hulk movie with Ruffalo. I'd much rather have that than Guardians of the Galaxy.

Can't wait for Guardians of the Galaxy.
@Alex Maidy, it should say "Drax," not "Frax."

My guess is Marvel will probably try to include Winter Soldier and Ant-Man in future The Avengers 2 movie. Probably they will try to squeeze in Black Panther somewhere in there.

"Groot, Frax, Rocket Racoon, Gamorra and Star Lord"?
Are they serious?
Sounds like The Coon & Friends.

Fast forward 2 years from now and you're cutting Rocket Racoon in your hair.

He'll kick your ass, one inch at a time!

Ant-Man may not have a date yet, but they're committing to making it with Edgar Wright. Which makes me very happy slappy.

I'm not a giant fan of giving Thor 2 the subtitle "The Dark World" as it sounds fairly generic, but I do like that Captain America 2 has been given the subtitle "The Winter Soldier". Terrific direction to go in.

I need a giant hand clap avatar/emoticon

Marvel is playing this really smart by building up more of their cinematic universe instead of trying to rush out Avengers 2 next year. I'm also glad that they aren't shying away from using obscure and unusual characters like Rocket Raccoon. Why no details on what the Ant-Man footage looked like Mr. Haidy? Also, not to be "that guy" but the character in Guardians of the Galaxy is called Drax not Frax. Carry on.

Wow,, I dont even know those characters but that art is badass. The mean looking Tree-creature and the fighting Racoon, that's a ballsy move to bring them to the big screen, and looks like it could be awesome.

Marvel and DC are exact opposites when it comes to their movie plans. Marvel has shit figured out years in advance. DC doesn't know what to do with any of their movies and can't even get them right half the time when they actually manage to produce one.

Don't jump to conclusions...

I know a lot of people are not very happy with the news of Guardians of the Galaxy and how their characters are going to be translated from comics to big screen, but let's not knock it until we hear some future news closer to the debut date.

seriously what the fuck

that talking, gun shooting Raccoon is going to ruin the MCU I'm putting money on it... can't believe they're going forward with that aspect... as popular as the character is you would think that'd be the first thing they'd go 'yeah we need to cut this'

I know the Marvel cinematic universe will always differ from the comics, but are they really going to try and do the Winter Soldier storyline so soon, and after the balls up they made of Bucky's character in the first Cap movie? I don't really see it doing justice to the original story.

Buckys death in the first movie was probably the weakest moment. It was played as if nothing happened. Bringing him back as Winter Soldier so soon to me is just not burying the lead
