Confirmed! James Gunn is directing Guardians of the Galaxy

Sep. 18, 2012by: Alex Maidy

Once Joss Whedon threw his support behind James Gunn's vision of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, it seemed a foregone inevitability that he would be the choice to direct the film. Now, we have confirmation that Gunn will carry both writing and directing duties on the upcoming Marvel movie.

Taking to his own Facebook page, Gunn posted the following just 15 minutes ago:

For a month or so thereís been a lot of Internet speculation about my involvement with Marvelís Guardians of the Galaxy. Until now I havenít said anything, because Iím trying to be less expulsive about this project than I am about the rest of my life. But last night I got the go-ahead from Kevin Feige to let you all know that, yes, indeed, I am rewriting and directing Guardians of the Galaxy. As a lifelong lover of Marvel comics, space epics, AND raccoons, this is the movie Iíve been waiting to make since I was nine years old. Kevin, Joss, and all the folks at Marvel have been amazing collaborators so far, and weíre committed to bringing you something majestic, beautiful, and unique. I am incredibly excited. I am also incredibly grateful to the fans and the press for all their words of encouragement and support regarding my involvement with this project since the news first leaked. Thanks Ė you have, honestly, touched and overwhelmed me. And thatís it for now. Other than the occasional photos of my dog and cat here on Facebook, Iíll talk to you again in August 2014 when Guardians is released!

While it remains to be seen if Gunn can take one of the more difficult Marvel stories to the big screen, this certainly seems like a leap in the right direction. It is apparent that Marvel have decided to streamline their cinematic focus to be in line with Joss Whedon's take on THE AVENGERS. As you know, I was not a big fan of that movie, but I hope that Whedon and Gunn can change my mind with the Phase Two films.

What do you think of this official announcement? Do you think Gunn is up to the task?

Good to hear!

If you would have told me 10 years ago that a feature film adaption of Guardians of the Galaxy would be made and Rocket Racoon would indeed be in it, I wouldn't have believed you for a second.

I wish him the best. I have a hard time believing this movie will be as successful as other Marvel films. It could end up like John Carter, a decent movie that never finds an audience. If its bad, than it could just be another green lantern. I'll keep an open mind for now.

The Right Stuff to Explore the Marvel Cosmic

James Gunn wrote both Scooby-Doo movies. Guardians of the Galaxy is likely a similar dark kids' movie with amazing elements in an adventurous and heroic tale. James Gunn wrote and directed Super, a superhero movie such as Guardians. He wrote and directed Slither, a creature feature with an underlying sense of humor such as a film with Groot and Racoon would need. And, Gunn is very familiar with special-effects-laden cinema. As often noted, James Gunn is the right man for this job. His official

Plus, Thanos might very well be in Guardians of the Galaxy. Thanos needs to be a bit scary. I bet Gunn can do scary. From seeing his films, I know that he can.

James Gunn

The guy is a loose cannon when it comes to movie making, and in my mind is a GENUINELY INCREDIBLE call to make the Guardians movie.

Marvel needed someone ballsy enough to do this idea true justice, but who also gets superheroes and cult movies and comics, Gunn is perfect for that. I just hope that, whilst self-referencing for a gag or two is fine, he doesn't feel the need to rub the ridiculousness of the concept into the audiences faces so much to the point where the characters or narrative

That's my only main concern, but with Marvel and Whedon guiding him, the movie should be an interesting, fun and massively "out there" take on the source material.

Awesome

Not familiar with the source material at all but I'm a big fan of Gunn and I love how Marvel gives these talented left-field directors a chance at the big time. Between Gunn and Whedon busting out films for the studio it would be a god damn shame if Nathan Fillion didn't get a chance to fit somewhere in there. Here's hoping.

Many posters complain about the double-post issue, but it mainly happens when you click refresh after you post your comment.....So stop doing that and see if it stops.

This one I don't know...

I heard of the name but really never seen the comic. I wonder if it'll be R or PG-13 because gunn makes some pretty fucked up stuff :) I am stoked no matter what. He deserves this. He's come a long way since troma :)

This movie needs someone who loves and understands not only Rocket Raccoon but the entire Marvel Cosmic Universe as well. I'm also thrilled James Gunn is on board and I can't wait!

god dammit

he likes raccoons. I got excited when I read he was re-writing the script, but then I read that... ugh Rocket Raccoon... I'd be totally amped for this movie if only it weren't for the talking, gun shooting raccoon.
