Is that really Matthew McConaughey in this set photo from The Dallas Buyer's Club?

Some actors will go to extremes physically to get themselves ready for a role. There are several examples like Christian Bale in THE MACHINIST, 50 Cent in THINGS FALL APART, and Charlize Theron in MONSTER. Another actor is joining their ranks-- Matthew McConaughey.

In THE DALLAS BUYER'S CLUB, McConaughey plays the role of Ron Woodroof, "a tough Texas electrician who was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986 and given six months to live. Unwilling to accept the doctors diagnosis Woodruff became frustrated by the lack of medical options. He found alternative drugs that created a lucrative smuggling business and made those same drugs available to other AIDS patients. However Woodruff died in 1992."

In the set photo below, the actor looks extremely frail and very unlike his usual fit self. In a recent interview with Larry King, McConaughey said this on the physical toll, "It takes a while for your body to understand that it has to feed off of itself and that youre not going to give it something else from the outside."

The difference was also quite noticeable when McConaughey was on the set of Martin Scorsese's next, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET. It's crazy the lengths that some actors will go, but at times it does have serious payoffs like an Academy Award in some cases. Also, nice career turnaround for McConaughey.

hmm...

He looks like Mike Wolfe, from American Pickers... Still, McConaughey has been kicking ass lately, so hopefully this film continues that trend.

What's more important

...is that he's finally picking projects that live up to his potential. I remember seeing Dazed and Confused in college, and being totally blown away by his screen presence. I was then dazed and confused by a bunch of the shitty movies he wound up starring in. I'm psyched he's changed course and I hope he sticks with it.

Its Oscar season indeed

I'm not sure what it is but I think McConaughey may pull this off and make it endearing and, this is going to sound strange, but he looks good for the role unlike 50cent who didn't really sell his act to make him sympathic.

Mr. McConaughey has been doing work lately. I've always liked the man but it really helps now that he has crawled out of romcom purgatory.

Also, he looks like a young Christopher Walken in those pictures.

I'm surprised.

This really doesn't seem like something he would do since he takes such good care of his body.

Yeah, but Christian Bale stays in shape and has done this twice.

cool, I dig McConaughey

but I'm not really surprised, shocked or wowed by this. Christian Bale's transformation in the Machinist has made me numb to any other psychical transformations for roles... probably forever.
