What did I just watch?: The trailer for The Canyons featuring Lindsay Lohan and porn star, James Deen

Oct. 8, 2012by: Niki Stephens

They say not to judge a book by its teaser trailer, but it sort of lends me to do otherwise.

A teaser for Bret Easton Ellis' THE CANYONS has arrived. Aside from wondering what method of acting Lindsay Lohan is using on this film, the trailer presents itself to be exactly what it is-- a cheap, sleazy, corny mess. I enjoy Ellis' work, but after seeing the trailer I wonder if this is the vibe he had hoped for-- all signs point to yes. THE CANYONS trailer is reminiscent of an exploitation flick, but I'm curious as to what it would have been like with bigger actors lending it a little more credibility.

Maybe there is something in this trailer that I'm not seeing. There's a chance that it will turn out to be some fantastic film destined for our "Awfully Good" column.

Now I've convinced myself I have to see it. Check out the teaser trailer below.

THE CANYONS is a contemporary L.A. noir from director Paul Schrader, writer Bret Easton Ellis, and producer Braxton Pope about the dangers of sexual obsession and ambition, both personally and professionally, among a group of young people in their 20's and how one chance meeting connected to the past unravels all of their lives, resulting in deceit, paranoia, cruel mind games and ultimately violence.

I kind of liked it

The trailer is actually good, but we'll have to wait for the actual film to judge it. I don't know why the hate from the author, is it just because is a Lindsay Lohan film?? if it were something from Tarantino or Rodriguez, i bet you would be clapping and praising the 70's exploitation look of it...

Braxton Pope, now that's a bad-ass producer's name if I ever saw one.

Interesting trailer, but I just hope that with all the remakes, that kids today don't start to do the same with actors and favor "James Deen" over THE James Dean.

The trailer was actually kind of cool, how it was done, but.......

but it was probably done like that to look cool and to hide it's crappiness.

While it looks to be exactly opposite of the L.A. locations teaser released a few months back, it is pure old-fashioned exploitation. I kind of hope that the film itself is a little more sleek, because while I'm not surprised Paul Schrader would want to tackle something like this, I would hope he doesn't get too gimmicky. He's still one of the most daring filmmakers out there for the kinds of characters who populate his movies.

Looks good...for now.

I actually liked that trailer. Who knows what the final result will be though. At the moment I'm in two frames of mind.
The positive side - Directed by Schrader and written by Easton Ellis.
The negative - Lohan.
Hopefully the positive will end up destroying the negative.
