[UPDATED] Jurassic Park 4 almost featured dino-humans fighting the war on drugs? Check out the concept art as proof!

Oct. 11, 2012by:

UPDATE: According to an inquiry made to Industrial Light & Magic regarding these JURASSIC PARK 4 concept art items, these are not official. The ILM statement reads: Not sure where this stuff came from but it’s not from a production we’ve worked on. Looks like someone’s personal work – ILM doesn’t put © lines on our work like in those images – we don’t own the work – the clients do.

There are only so many ways that you can say WTF to this kind of news. Part of me wants to cry bullshit because there is no way that Steven Spielberg would have signed off on a load of crap like this. If it is true, it goes to show that Hollywood is capable of destroying absolutely any franchise.

There are old scripts for JURASSIC PARK 4 dating back to 2007 that feature human-dinosaur hybrids. Ain't It Cool News has a detailed analysis of the screenplay and the batshit crazy storyline of an evil corporation designing super soldiers using the genetic samples from Isla Nublar. The resulting carnage would have pit humans versus these creatures.

The Ain't It Cool News review features this summary of the hybrids: Nick is put in charge of training these five dinosaurs, X1 through X5, and the first thing he does is name them. “Any soldier worth his pay has a name to answer to, not a number,” he says. So we are introduced to Achilles, Hector, Perseus, Orestes, and Spartacus, each of them a specially created deinonychus, which is sort of like a miniature T-rex. They have super-sensitive smell and hearing, incredible strength and speed and pack-hunting instincts, and they have modified forelegs, lengthened and topped with more dextrous fingers, as well as dog DNA for increased obedience and human DNA so they can solve problems well. All of this is topped off with a drug-regulating implant that can dose them with adrenaline or serotonin as the situation demands.

Before you think this was written by hacks, the screenplay is credited to John Sayles (THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES) and William Monahan (THE DEPARTED). So, of course Universal greenlit the project, right? Oh, wait, we still haven't seen JURASSIC PARK 4 yet. And, apparently, for good reason. But, they did get as far into production as generating some concept art.

Even looking at the concept art posted on CHUD, I want to say someone just took some concepts from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN version of The Lizard and tweaked them. But, as you keep scrolling, it just gets worse and worse.

I am all for insane movie ideas, but you can't take a franchise grounded in one reality and then completely up-end it like this. Michael Crichton's novels were science fiction but steeped in science fact, an idea that Spielberg embraced when he filmed JURASSIC PARK. Taking the story and turning it into this is just plain wrong. If the idea truly did stem from Spielberg, then I have lost a little respect for the man.

Extra Tidbit: Maybe they recycled this script for the upcoming NINJA TURTLES movie?

I'm with everyone else here in saying that this looks cool, but not for Jurassic Park. The JP franchise barely survived what they did with the Spinosaurus and pterodactyls, they don't need things like this to nail the coffin.

Give these guys their own movie however, give them an enemy - terrorist organization, aliens, mole-people, heck anything- then call it something like "Jurassic Troopers", "Soldiersaurus", "D.I.N.O. S.W.A.T. Team," -I'm terrible at mainstream movie names- and I and many

hmmm

This is a good idea for a sci-fi action movie, only not Jurassic Park. So i'm glad they never went with this idea. hopefully they can come out with something more realistic, like dino's migrating to other countries and causing havoc. that is about the only way they can go really.

Wouldn't need to be a Jurassic Park branded movie, but a lot worse stuff gets released. Some of the concept art is pretty decent.

Jurassic Park has a very special place in my heart and childhood because it's the first film I ever saw in cinemas when I was about 4-years old. Seeing a movie of such magnitude ignited my own love for movies in general ever since. While Jurassic Park 3 may not have lived up to the name, this concept is a complete abomination. Call it something else and I'd probably like it. Call it Jurassic Park and I want to burn the studio to the ground.

Perhaps the most ironic thing is that this is not a farfetched deviation from the sort of thing Michael Crichton would have written a novel about. However, he would have made it a story about technology and ethics, rather than a stupid action story about drug control. His last novel, before he died, is not so far off from this concept. It's called Next, and I read it at least once a year.

I'm so glad this didn't happen. I know it's cool to go the 'hybrid' route, but as a kid obsessed with dinosaurs the reason I loved the Jurassic Park movies was because they featured those fascinating creatures come to life, with great care taken to make them feel like they were real, living, breathing animals, not things that may be more at home in a SyFy Channel 'original' film. Sure, these may be pretty cool designs, but I just don't think they gel with Crichton's original vision (though I

I think the artwork looks pretty cool actually. Like a "what if dino's evolved to humanoid" type of things. It reminds me of dale russell's dinosauroid (google that to see what i mean for those not familiar). I would never make this part of the JP franchise...but maybe a separate sci-fi movie where dinos evolved into humanoids instead of birds etc.

Well, at least it's better than retreading old ideas and going back to Isla Nublar for a fourth time. It's kind of a logical progression from the first film's concept of the ethics of cloning, going into gene-splicing and fucking around with bio-weapons. Although it does indeed take it dangerously close to Alien territory at that point; perhaps the next film will feature a giant conglomerate of Ingen and Weyland-Yutani (InWeyTani?). Anyway, it would probably work really well as a background

Anyway, it would probably work really well as a background plot if they do another one, but might come off as laughable if it was the focus of the story.

I've said it once before: give Michael Fassbender a shotgun and khaki shorts and do the Muldoon prequel story where we see the carnage that happened to the scientists and park staff when the Raptors first got created ("They should all be destroyed!"). Yes, we're going back to the island, but at least it's set before they knew any better.

This compared to Jurassic Park is like the equivalent of what Alien vs. Predator is to Alien. Or Predator. As a separate idea with no ties to Jurassic Park, I might be ok with it. But I don't want it anywhere near the Jurassic Park franchise.

I like the idea of dino-human hybrid and those designs looks pretty neat, the whole thing reminds me of "the island of dr. moreau" the same type of concept. I wouldnt mind it if they took it in this direction, the first three movies used pretty much the same formula and this would turned it into a whole new ball game. That said it would be hard to pull it off without looking campy but I think it could be done.

I remember when they were talking about this years ago...

It may have even been Ain't It Cool who first broke the news. But I vividly recall hearing rumors that Jurassic Park 4 was going to feature Dinosaurs with semi-automatic weapons. Actually seeing their concept art really brought this back.
