Arnold Schwarzenegger is officially set to star in The Legend of Conan for Universal!

Oct. 25, 2012by: Alex Maidy

The question was posed just two weeks ago: will Arnold Schwarzenegger be making TERMINATOR 5 or another CONAN movie next?. We now know the answer.

Schwarzenegger is officially on board THE LEGEND OF CONAN which will be produced by Universal Pictures. The film will be a direct sequel to CONAN THE BARBARIAN and skip the events of CONAN THE DESTROYER as well as the Jason Momoa reboot. Universal is aiming for a summer 2014 release.

THE LEGEND OF CONAN will be produced by Paradox Entertainment, which owns the rights to the character. Chris Morgan will produce for Universal. Morgan, who has worked on 47 RONIN, WANTED, and the FAST AND THE FURIOUS series developed the story and may write the screenplay.

Morgan is a huge fan of the CONAN series and had this to say about the new film: “After the original seminal movie, all that came after looked silly to me. Robert E. Howard’s mythology and some great philosophy from Nietzsche to Atilla the Hun was layered in the original film. People say, he didn’t speak for the first 20 minutes of the film, but that was calculated in depicting this man who takes control of life with his own hand. This movie picks up Conan where Arnold is now in his life, and we will be able to use the fact that he has aged in this story. I love the property of Conan so much that I wouldn’t touch it unless we came up with something worthy. We think this is a worthy successor to the original film. Think of this as Conan’s Unforgiven.”

THE LEGEND OF CONAN = UNFORGIVEN? Hell-f*cking-yeah!

Morgan will not shy away from the violence which tells me we can definitely look forward to a respectable follow up to the classic film. Schwarzenegger has been making some wise choices in recent years (well, not in his personal life) and this looks like the best project yet! How excited are you guys for THE LEGEND OF CONAN?

Extra Tidbit: No words can describe how badass this news is!

WOW, never thought it would happen. Such sweet news! As bad as Destroyer was, I'd love to see a Grace Jones cameo. And while we're revisiting old franchises, let's get Arnie back together w/ Jamie Lee Curtis & James Cameron!

That's a lot of green for an uninspired, unoriginal, cashgrab sequel that's also a reboot/reimagining since it ignores the first sequel. Where are all those "c'mon Hollywood, do something original" crybabies now?

But that is another story...

...And by Crom, it will finally be told!!! Arnold IS Conan just like Robert Downey Jr. IS Iron Man. Sometimes an actor fits so well with a role that it is theirs, period. I have been waiting for Arnold's return as the Barbarian King since the last time he sat brooding on his thrown back in 1984. In 2003, after Arnold walked away from what was to be his next film, King Conan: Crown of Iron, in favor of politics, I never thought this third act would happen. And now, nearly 10 years later, here

And to those fools who quip that Arnold is too old to play Conan again: Wake up and actually read the press release. Conan is supposed to be old in the new film. That's the whole point. Arnold is the perfect age to return as Conan.

Not happy about this

Evidently Joblo has decided to tailor this story to make it easier to swallow. Here's another quote from one of the other producers that can be found on Superherohype.com

“The original ended with Arnold on the throne as a seasoned warrior, and this is the take of the film we will make,” producer Frederik Malmberg tells the site about where The Legend of Conan picks up. “It’s that Nordic Viking mythic guy who has played the role of king, warrior, soldier and mercenary, and who has bedded

“The original ended with Arnold on the throne as a seasoned warrior, and this is the take of the film we will make,” producer Frederik Malmberg tells the site about where The Legend of Conan picks up. “It’s that Nordic Viking mythic guy who has played the role of king, warrior, soldier and mercenary, and who has bedded more women than anyone, nearing the last cycle of his life. He knows he’ll be going to Valhalla, and wants to go out with a good battle.”

Now myself - I liked the original film and though Momoa's reboot was solid but not spectacular - but a definite improvement over both of Arnold's. Having him return for a film that presents him as a Viking - is dumb and ignores what Conan is about. Having Arnold return to KILL him is worse.

I love that quote. Makes me even more stoked for the pic. The Viking reference is merely a comparison to what type of character Conan will have evolved into, not that he'll be an actual Viking. C'mon now.

PLEASE keep the R rating

Great news...Conan is an awesome character, but this movie to keep the tits and gore of the original movie intact.

Cona-boner!

The only thing that can describe the feelings I'm having for the sequel to the GREATEST sword and sorcery movie of all time. Is a mixture of having to say I have a Conan Boner. Or more simply, a Cona-boner! #conaboner

@TheBodyguard: I think a big part of the appeal in this idea is that Cimmerians are an unrealistically bad ass race of warriors. The potential for suspension of disbelief is a lot bigger than any of Arnold's other current movies, which take place, tentatively, in the real world. It's highly unlikely that a man Arnold's age would be doing a lot of fighting and gun shooting in the real world, or anything resembling the real world. But in the fantastical world of Cimmeria, it's very likely that a tall, 300-pound, 65-year-old, veteran sword-fighter/warrior king would still be riding around crushing his enemies, seeing them driven before him, and hearing the lamentation of their women.

I dont know.

I think Arnie would have to really go through some shit to get in the kind of shape he would have to be in to pull it off .Even Conan the King, which really is what this should be. I thought Momoa was GREAT as Conan, it was almost everything around him, especially the script, that tripped that movie up. IMO.

Shit the bed!!!!
This news just made my day. I'm so glad it's skipping the events of Destroyer (one of Arnold's worst) and the remake (still haven't seen it). Noone can replace Arnie for sheer swagger. I hope Milius or Verhoeven directs, and I will definitely be seeing this in theaters.

What is best in life? Blood and tits!!!!!!!!!

Arnold really doesn't need to be revisiting old movies. This will end up being another terrible movie from Arnold who needs to retire.

You sound like an anti-Arnold person who will say disparaging things regardless of the movie. Why comment then if that be the case?

OK first off, I can comment however I want. I love Arnold's classics. Total Recall, Predator, Terminator, etc. I have enjoyed them. But I don't buy him as a badass anymore. He is oooooooold. I mean come on before he went into office, he was making shit movies.

Also, fuck you guys

I thought Arnold has made some great movies, but some stinkers too. In the "great" category is Conan the Barbarian. I'm up for picking up the story 30 years later, but I do agree with others who say that this should be the story of Conan the King. Thirty years is a long time for Conan to survive without having become the king foretold in the end of Barbarian.

YES!

Well that explains why Arnold smashed out 4 films this year; so he can take a year off to train for Conan, but still have a steady release schedule.

THIS IS GOING TO BE EPIC!

Bring on more Schwarzenegger Conan!
Too bad Mako isn't alive anymore to narrate.

Get a visionary director who can truly deliverer a great epic Conan. Guillermo del Toro would be my top choice.

This is awesome news, but the title should be Conan the King. And even though Conan the Destroyer is kind of terrible, it should still be counted. Conan the King should be the final part in the trilogy.

HHHEEEEYYYAAAAAAAAA!!

Man, I stop by just to see what's up and Schwarzenegger is blowing up! This is awesome news and based on Morgan's description I think he has the pulse of where to go with this story (i.e. dealing with a much older Arnie). Next up is finding a kick ass director (not Marcus Nispel!). Could they dust off Mr. Vehoeven for one last hurrah with ol' Arnold? That would make me a very happy Schmoe...
