Your trip to Castle Wolfenstein written and directed by Roger Avary is a go!

Wolfenstein game comparison

Long in the works, it at last looks like another video game adaptation is officially on its way to the silver screen.  CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN, first developed by Muse Software and later made exponentially more famous (and bloody) by entries from iD Software (DOOM, QUAKE) titled WOLFENSTEIN 3D and RETURN TO CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN, has received the green light from production company Davis Films.  The company has worked on multiple genre projects to varying success over the years (including SILENT HILL TRUE ROMANCE, THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF, and the RESIDENT EVIL series), so CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN is in at the very least familiar hands.  Whether they are secure/good/encouraging hands is another matter that will no doubt be revealed as casting gets underway.

In the meantime, the only thing we really know about the project as of now is that Roger Avary (PULP FICTION, BEOWULF, KILLING ZOE, SILENT HILL) will direct from his own script. Read on for the press release, as well as a few words from the different players involved in the production.

Roger Avary on couch

"CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN is an action adventure film in the vein of CAPTAIN AMERICA and INGLORIOUS BASTERDS. The story follows a young US Army Captain and a British Special Agent on a top secret mission to Castle Wolfenstein, where Hitler will be for the unveiling of a new secret weapon. After reaching the Castle, our heroes are confronted with Himmler's SS Paranormal Division and must fight, not only for their survival, but for a mission that could alter the course of the War."

Producer Samuel Hadida on Avary's involvement: “With Roger at the helm, we expect everyone will join us for a wild and fun cinematic ride that will grab contemporary film audiences with the same irreverent, hip, over the top approach that Roger brought to PULP FICTION and the other films he has either written or directed. It is a big action adventure but also strongly character driven and based on a very solid story.  The film involves a classic assault on the bad guys, who are nominally Nazis, more evocative of INGLORIUS BASTERDS than the actual World War II. It is a vaguely futuristic retro world as fun as CAPTAIN AMERICA, which has recently been reintroduced to the world audience with great success.”

And Avary himself on this opportunity: “I’ve been playing the WOLFENSTEIN games since I was a kid, and feel that their outlandish sensibility has deeply influenced my own writing and directing throughout my career. I have always thought WOLFENSTEIN, transformed and opened for the screen to wider audiences not familiar with the games, would be a major cinematic experience, which is why I introduced it to Samuel. He bought the rights, and I could not be happier that we are now embarking on this adventure.”

CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN is currently licensing distrubution rights at the American Film Market.  More as we hear it.

Castle Wolfenstein undead legions

Oh how far video games have come since the late 80s.

Extra Tidbit: I'm looking forward to seeing the supernatural elements at play in the story, as there was a fair amount of lore and mysticism and magic at play by the time the last game in the series released.

Roger is hit and miss for me. Not a big fan of this being adapted, but could be fun if done right. Then again, Silent Hill's script was terrible, so I am not sure how Avery will do with a lesser video game adaptation. Or perhaps it will be better, as there is not as much compelling material in Wolfenstein.

He's a favourite for anyone who loves movies. This is great news!

His life got twisted around but it's nice to see him working on things like this again. Beowulf was fantastic and based on his well reported videogame playing habits this is the guy you want making videogame adaptations. Read the script for Silent Hill that he wrote. This is pretty much the one film maker who can make the game's fans happy and entertain the shit out of everyone else with something incredible. If you can't tell that from his scripts or his direction you don't know anything about

Nice concept

Love the games since 1992. My dad and I played that on our IBM-PC killing Nazis.
This could be good or really bad.

Roger Avary

You mean the scumbag who killed his passenger in a drink-and-drive accident, then got off light on a house containment sentence but sent out false tweets claiming that he was in prison and being mistreated by guards? The guy who, when the judge found out about this violation of his sentencing, promptly sent him to a real prison for being an inconsiderate, lying asshole? Excuse me if I'd prefer this piece of human filth to never achieve any future success, let alone work, in Hollywood.

Are you retarded?

The guy who got in a car accident and refused to take a breathalyser because he wanted to ride in the ambulance with his near death wife who was ejected from the car upon impact?
The guy who pleaded guilty because he voluntarily paid out 4.5 million in a civil suit to the family of the deceased and didn't want to bankrupt his family paying for a defence in a criminal trial?
The guy who went to prison and exercised his right to free speech by writing creative posts on

The guy who had a horrible piece of bad luck after spending more years than you've been alive breathing life into a limp industry?
That guy?
Everything he's said or done indicates he's gone through hell and you're going to bash him? On a fucking movie site?
Try and not be such a dumbshit and actually read up on things before claiming to be some harbinger of the fucking truth you fucking idiot.

This could be a massive success or a crazy bomb waiting to blow. Hard to tell at this point in the game.
