Are you enchanted by this new trailer for Oz the Great and Powerful?

Nov. 14, 2012by: Alejandro Stepenberg

Oz the Great and Powerful proper header

Just yesterday a full poster triptych was revealed for OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, and now a new trailer has come along to showcase Sam Raimi's Oz brought fully to life.  Full of vibrant colors and explosive effects and more than a few nods to THE WIZARD OF OZ, the trailer pulls no punches with what viewers should expect - magic, munchkins, anachronistic humor, curious creatures, and a big budget put to impressive use.

I'd be curious to ask the creator of EVIL DEAD his thoughts on the course his career has taken over the years, as OZ seems to present one of the biggest departures yet from his past filmography.  Though you can certainly see his horror roots in those wicked flying monkeys...

But enough from me - here's the trailer.  View it below, and then strike back below that to with what you think!

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL arrives to whisk you away on March 8th, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: That definitely sounds like Rachel Weisz saying "the treasure is yours only after you defeat the Wicked Witch." I had thus far assumed that she would be the one to become the Wicked Witch, which means I'm now officially confused. Also, what's this prophecy business all about?

Why do all of these remakes and adaptations of these classic stories turn into giant wars for the big finale?

Just like Alice...

Like another guy said, this looks EXACTLY like Burton's Alice in Wonderland. In other words, it just looks way too fake and "plasticky", if you know what I mean... The goal of a fantasy movie should be to make you feel like you have traveled to another world, you simply can't do that with CGI, especially when it's THAT obvious. The only way to make a GOOD fantasy movie, is to pretty much do EVERYTHING Peter Jackson and his crew did with the Lord Of The Rings movies and Middle Earth in general.

Better than before, but STILL too much shitty CGI

I like this a touch more than previously, but the CGI is too much in some cases.

Well that was greatly disappointing... What's up with all the cgi!? Sometimes I feel like Hollywood is going backwards. Won't say the movie is bad before actually seeing it, but The Wizard Of Oz being one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time, this looks BAD (might be wrong, but I doubt it).

Looks amazingly awesome. I don't care how much CGI is used, that was a sensory overload, and it looks like so much fun to boot. I love that Zach Braff is voicing the monkey, love James Franco, and love those three lovely ladies, whats to hate.

Also, this will make a killing at the box office. If Alice in Wonderland was a smash hit, people will eat this up too, and the Oz name appeals to everyone from age 2 to 92.

Confused

This LOOKS AMAZING! I am SOOO excited about this movie!. Most anticipated movie of 2013 so far. Though I am also confused on the witch situation. By the looks of the great movie poster, there's the 3 actresses and then the Wicked Witch of the West lurking in the shadows, does this mean there are 4 witches or is one of the actresses secretly the wicked witch of the west. Plus the wicked witch of the west has green skin and none of the actresses have green skin. So maybe, Mila Kunis is

So maybe, Mila Kunis is playing the Wicked Witch in disguise because in the trailer she introduces herself as the Good Witch. Maybe her and her sister, the wicked witch of the east played by Rachel Weisz trick him into thinking they are the good witches. Clearly Michelle Williams' Glinda is the good witch, but has there ever or will there ever be a good witch of the south? It just makes sense. Mmm...Can't wait for the movie!

Could someone please take the billions of dollars away from Sam Raimi please.

He works better with a single camera, a vague idea of which direction to head in and a $50 note for his budget.

This seems to take the trademark, zany, camera spinning inventive crazy energetic madness of Raimi.....and tarnish it in an EXTREMELY heavy and numbing coating of CGI. He managed to pull it off in the first two Spidey's, at least they had SOME grounding in reality, this looks like a well rendered video game cut scene.

I'd say I'm now on board. Sure it looks fairly CGI-heavy, but also very inventive. Raimi seems like he's really letting his imagination run wild here, and I'm hoping for the best. At any rate I'd say it looks miles better than Alice in Wonderland.

Tidbit: It's fairly obvious that Evanora (Rachael Weiz) is tricking Oz (Franco) into killing Glinda (Michelle Williams).

"OZ seems to present the biggest departure yet from his past filmography."
I always thought that "For Love of the Game" was worthy of being called that.

There's a very good reason for that. It's from the same producers and studio.

Have to agree

There's just too much "CGI spectacle." IMO, CGI has diminishing returns, and the more that's in there, the more my brain resists suspension of disbelief.

Love the cast and looks very inventive and fun but goddamn does the Tim Burton "Alice In Wonderland" look scare me. Did anybody else get chills from the last shot? :)

Also since some are confused about which witch plays which (say that 10 times fast), here's the breakdown:

Mila Kunis as Theodora, the Wicked Witch of the West
Michelle Williams as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North
Rachel Weisz as Evanora, the Wicked Witch of the East (who is later pancaked by Dorothy's house)

Rachel could be deceiving him in the trailer or telling him to kill Mila. Either way I want all three of them together in an Esquire spread wearing lingerie when the movie comes out next year. :)
